“Over-rated and over-priced”
Reviewed July 20, 2011

We were recommended this hotel and were very disappointed. I had booked a room with logis on-line at a cost of 78 euros but was shown to a room directly on the main road so asked for a quieter room. The "upgrade" cost 127 euros but had no a/c, no shower, and no kettle. The cost of a black coffee was 4.5 euros. Breakfast is 13 euros each but there is no chef on a Monday morning so only cold meats, cheese croissants etc. The food in the restaurant is very good as other reviews state, however, there is no atmosphere. There is no music, the waitresses are efficient but don't even smile, and the staff assume a superiority over their guests. When we checked out the receptionist was on the telephone during the whole process. Overall we thought it pretentious. Moved on to the Hotel de la Paix in Reims, 100 euros less for bed and dinner, with an excellent seafood restaurant, and walking distance to the champagne houses.

Stayed for 2 nights whilst seeing Troyes and the Foret d'Orient. Beautiful building with quality fittings. Room well equipped and bathroom as you would expect. The food is top quality but, for us , a bit pricey. Staff helpful and friendly and they didn't automatically use English which was great. Breakfast was not a buffet which is rare these days but still had plenty to offer. Only thing missing was a kettle in our room.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good

Nice place, friendly and with large comfortable rooms. Quiet village, the lake is within walking distance. We didn't eat in the hotel as we wanted to see Troyes. Breakfast was good but a little over priced at €13pp. A good bet though.

We stopped here one night driving back from Switzerland to UK. Hadn't booked in advance so were lucky they had three single rooms for us. Pretty, comfortable room in a hotel with plenty of character for 69 Euros each. Breakfast was excellent. Be aware that the restaurant is not cheap - the cheapest fixed price menu was 40 Euros - but the food was first class.
The village is great with lots of old half-timbered building. The lake was half empty - it's used to regulate the Seine and is routinely empty outside the summer period so they can use it to divert water after heavy rain.

We paid 110 Euros the night for the room (breakfast and dinner on top) for a weekend stay. I hadn't done much research beforehand of the area (it was a quickly organised weekend out of Paris - the idea of being in Champagne, next to a pretty lake, albeit an artificial one, sounded great - of course, we only found out when we got there that this was the year when they were draining the damn lake - which they do once every ten years...

Well, given that little surprise, the lake wasn't at its best, but we went walking anyway. Good thing, as the dinner menus in the hotel were a real surprise and worth the calorie onslaught which comes with the typically French gastronomic menu. The chef (who owns the hotel) is a superb professional and not what I expected to find in an out of the way location. After the first night, we were confident enough of his skills to choose the lobster menu the second night and we weren't disappointed.

The service from all the staff was excellent and constituted an excellent reminder (as if one needs it...) that getting out of Paris is the best way to get value for money and also real service. We went recently to Senderens in Paris for a gastronomic night out @150 Euros a head and, seriously, the service and the food was a real disappointment. I'd choose this rural hotel over Senderens any day - and for two-thirds of the price!!

Re rooms, ours was clean and large - standard fittings for a rural hotel - I'd say an honest room, a good enough bed, but nothing out of the ordinary. But for the price, I was more than happy.

Well worth a trip when you next want to stock up on champagne, or passing by on your trip to the south of France in your auto.

  • Liked — The people. The restaurant.
  • Disliked — The half empty lake the month we were there...

Have recently stayed here for the third time. A member of Logis de France, this Auberge is superbly situated close to the Lac D'Orient and only 10 miles east of Junction23 of the A26 and 6 miles north of Junction 22 of the A5. This makes it a superb stopover if travelling south from the Channel ports. Having said that, there is plenty to do in the area to make it a long weekend destination. The junior suites are all newly and beautifully refurbished. Good bathrooms. The food is excellent and it is a real treat to dine on the garden terrace on a fine evening. Great value at 207 euros for two people half board. Highly recommended.
