This is a pub that most definitely takes advantage of the fact that places to eat here are not abudance. The pub/hotel itself is in good condition and has a welcoming open fire. The service was decent etc. However the food here is nothing special at all, perfectly edible and you get reasonable quantities but for what you get the price is high. The drink prices are even higher! What a rip off!!! These drink prices are like central London prices.
Loved the village but when we return we will eat and drink elsewhere.

Always pop into the racehorses after a long walk in the dales, good choice of ales, lovely soup n sandwich, and highly recommended fish n chunky homemade chips , the staff are very attentive at all times.I ordered a roast beef sandwich.which came a bit red than I expected ,when I asked for an alternative it was no problem , ( but that's just my taste ) ,dogs are always greeted with a doggie goodie....owner pleasant and always remembers who we are on every return .on the whole lovely village pub .

Had a drive out to Kettlewell last Saturday (29/12/12) with my wife, son and his girlfriend. Stopped at the Racehorses Hotel (Pub) for lunch. From a slightly confusing menu with asterix marks we ordered soup and sandwich meal deals. We confirmed with the foreign waitress that the roast beef sandwiches could be included in the deal. The food arrived, pumpkin soup and sandwiches which I have to admit we thoroughly enjoyed. The sandwich was small so I still felt hungry. I went to pay the bill which was £36.40p I think. About to walk away, I totted up what we had eaten and realised we should have been charged approx £25.00. I politely challenged the bearded barman/owner (who appears to have been mentioned in numerous other negative reviews) and he stated that the roast beef sandwiches were not included in the meal deal. I could see by his demeanour that I was not going to get anywhere (he kept stating that the menu was perfectly clear) so I left before I spoilt what had been a very pleasant day. If the roast beef sandwich was not part of the meal deal, why was it served as a meal deal. If we were paying for the soup individually, why were we not supplied with the mini Hovis - type loaf to accompany it as advertised on his VERY CLEAR MENU. Very arrogant and will not get our custom again.

Having come for a weekends walking, we started with a lovely walk on Whernside, followed by a meal at this pub. We were encouraged to try the "whiskey of the month" and ordered two doubles, expecting to pay around £12 tops. Imagine how horrified we were to receive just 20p change from a £20 note!!!!

What a rip-off, made even worse by finding out later that this whiskey - Glenrothes - retails for £32 a bottle. At wholesale prices even less, I would guess. As for the food, it was nothing special but the service from the entirely Czech agency staff was reasonable if not a bit clinical.

Would we eat or drink here again? No, the place left a bad taste in our mouths.
