We spent a delightful week (26 April to 3 May 2013) with Susan and Chris at Langcliffe House. We recommend this clean, tastefully decorated B&B without hesitation. Susan and Chris are perfect hosts, ever available, yet sensitive and unobtrusive, while the accommodation and setting of the house are outstanding. The house is warm and there is abundant hot water; new photovoltaic panels on their roof attest to their environmental awareness as does their garden. There are numerous excellent hikes right from the house, while if the weather turns bad, staying indoors is a great, relaxing place to just “be”.
I’m celiac (my wife is “normal”) and Chris had said when we first called about a reservation that they could meet my gluten-free needs, and that they did! On arrival, we were greeted with a delicious gluten-free lemon-polenta cake and tea of our choice. We choose a “regular” English breakfast most days of eggs, with fresh tomatoes, field mushrooms, bacon and, for me, very tasty herby gluten-free sausages. There was a variety of Susan’s homemade preserves and local honey. Chris bakes bread, so while providing fresh conventional seedy wheat bread for my wife, he surpassed himself making gluten-free loaves, carefully segregating the ingredients, using separate knives and boards, as well as using the grill, rather than the toaster, for toast. Of course, since there is only one kitchen, people with extreme sensitivity to gluten may have a problem; I was fine however. The breakfasts set us up well for long days of waddling, er, I mean walking.
Our room gave us great views that included abundant birdlife, playful lambs and posturing pheasants. It was large with plenty of space for our bags under the very comfortable bed, lots of room for my wife to practice for her yoga/Pilates classes and a pair of easy chairs. A kettle and mugs were right there with coffee, hot chocolate and a variety of teas, along with gluten and gluten-free cookies! It was attractively decorated and included two of Susan’s paintings. Our only concern was that it would have been nice to have had a desk to sit at with our laptop; the only workspace available was taken up by the TV. Susan has since told us they will be looking into that issue. The shower room was well provided with quality amenities, and while the shower itself was fine for us, it could be a bit of a challenge for larger (ie wider) folks!
The house has a superb conservatory, with stunning views down Wharfedale. It is a great place to relax with coffee or tea, or with a glass of wine. We had several very pleasant evenings chatting with Chris and Susan. They are well travelled and knowledgeable, while being innovators and very community-orientated within the village of Kettlewell. We had room and front door keys so we could come and go as we pleased, although we never actually locked our room since we felt very safe and secure. Parking on the driveway was fine and Susan assured us that they have alternative arrangements for their own cars when there are more guests.
We ate dinner at the two local pubs (a third is closed temporarily); both provide quality meals, although we found we preferred the smaller, more personal, Blue Bell Inn who again catered with good humour and understanding for this celiac. For those willing to drive, there are many good pubs, and restaurants, in nearby villages and towns. A wonderful traditional village store supplies everything required for making picnic lunches.
Overall, we feel this B&B is simply the best and we look forward to returning. The combination of such hospitality and quality in such a beautiful location cannot be beat. We recommend it without hesitation, though we have to admit, selfishly, that we’d like to keep this secret to ourselves!
