“Simply the Best!”
Reviewed May 15, 2013

We spent a delightful week (26 April to 3 May 2013) with Susan and Chris at Langcliffe House. We recommend this clean, tastefully decorated B&B without hesitation. Susan and Chris are perfect hosts, ever available, yet sensitive and unobtrusive, while the accommodation and setting of the house are outstanding. The house is warm and there is abundant hot water; new photovoltaic panels on their roof attest to their environmental awareness as does their garden. There are numerous excellent hikes right from the house, while if the weather turns bad, staying indoors is a great, relaxing place to just “be”.

I’m celiac (my wife is “normal”) and Chris had said when we first called about a reservation that they could meet my gluten-free needs, and that they did! On arrival, we were greeted with a delicious gluten-free lemon-polenta cake and tea of our choice. We choose a “regular” English breakfast most days of eggs, with fresh tomatoes, field mushrooms, bacon and, for me, very tasty herby gluten-free sausages. There was a variety of Susan’s homemade preserves and local honey. Chris bakes bread, so while providing fresh conventional seedy wheat bread for my wife, he surpassed himself making gluten-free loaves, carefully segregating the ingredients, using separate knives and boards, as well as using the grill, rather than the toaster, for toast. Of course, since there is only one kitchen, people with extreme sensitivity to gluten may have a problem; I was fine however. The breakfasts set us up well for long days of waddling, er, I mean walking.

Our room gave us great views that included abundant birdlife, playful lambs and posturing pheasants. It was large with plenty of space for our bags under the very comfortable bed, lots of room for my wife to practice for her yoga/Pilates classes and a pair of easy chairs. A kettle and mugs were right there with coffee, hot chocolate and a variety of teas, along with gluten and gluten-free cookies! It was attractively decorated and included two of Susan’s paintings. Our only concern was that it would have been nice to have had a desk to sit at with our laptop; the only workspace available was taken up by the TV. Susan has since told us they will be looking into that issue. The shower room was well provided with quality amenities, and while the shower itself was fine for us, it could be a bit of a challenge for larger (ie wider) folks!

The house has a superb conservatory, with stunning views down Wharfedale. It is a great place to relax with coffee or tea, or with a glass of wine. We had several very pleasant evenings chatting with Chris and Susan. They are well travelled and knowledgeable, while being innovators and very community-orientated within the village of Kettlewell. We had room and front door keys so we could come and go as we pleased, although we never actually locked our room since we felt very safe and secure. Parking on the driveway was fine and Susan assured us that they have alternative arrangements for their own cars when there are more guests.

We ate dinner at the two local pubs (a third is closed temporarily); both provide quality meals, although we found we preferred the smaller, more personal, Blue Bell Inn who again catered with good humour and understanding for this celiac. For those willing to drive, there are many good pubs, and restaurants, in nearby villages and towns. A wonderful traditional village store supplies everything required for making picnic lunches.

Overall, we feel this B&B is simply the best and we look forward to returning. The combination of such hospitality and quality in such a beautiful location cannot be beat. We recommend it without hesitation, though we have to admit, selfishly, that we’d like to keep this secret to ourselves!

Langcliffe is a beautiful house with lots of space and the most breathtaking views of the Dale. It's a two minute walk from the centre of Kettlewell, a beautiful picture-postcard village with a traditional shop and three (three!) pubs. Our room was tastefully decorated, newly fitted-out, had a great comfortable bed and everything we needed - including an amazing power shower in the en-suite. The best thing for me was probably the hosts Sue and Chris - they are a real part of the community and very knowledgeable about everything local - from a multitude of walks (for all abilities/inclinations) to which pub has the best wine. Welcoming, warm and great company, and the breakfast was outstanding.

Chris and Sue could not have been more accommodating and helpful. They managed to fit six of us into their two double rooms without any problems, made lovely packed lunches for us the next day. And a hearty breakfast in the morning. They gave us plenty of very helpful local tips, and booked us in to the best restaurant in the village before we'd barely put our bags down.

It has to be the best place to stay in Kettlewell. I'd be very surprised if you found a couple more pleasant and welcoming. Thanks Chris & Sue for looking after us.

We had a lovely stay. We were made to feel welcome from the second we walked into the door. There are a choice of rooms. We were in the Blue room and it was modern yet tasteful. The bed was comfy and the en-suite was brilliant, the shower was powerful and warm. The views from the room were stunning, they really can take your breath away. The breakfasts were perfect. Thanks to Chris and Sue for their hospitality, we'll be coming back in the summer.

Room Tip: The front bedroom has views over the river and dales one way and the back room is views of the dales...

Langcliffe House is an exceptional place to stay. The hospitality, comfort and warm welcome from Sue and Chris is wonderful. They are the perfect hosts and know so much about the area. The location and the views towards Upper Wharfedale are stunningly beautiful. The delicious breakfast made from local produce will ruin any diet. I'll definitely stay there again - if I can get in!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the valley.

I have stayed at this B&B on several occasions and have always been delighted! In the heart of the Dales, the accommodation is spacious, homely and welcoming. The view from the conservatory is to die for... I yearn to return to refresh my spirit there soon! Susan and Chris are such good hosts and so interesting (and breakfast was fab!)

We had a wonderful long weekend at Langcliffe House; a warm and extremely comfortable stay in the "Blue Room" with stunning views of Upper Warfedale. Given the warmest of welcomes by Susan and Chris; what a treat to be served home-made cake with tea in the conservatory after a chilly walk through the Dales! Our hosts were friendly and helpful, with lots of interesting local knowledge and more than willing to help organise our days. We thoroughly enjoyed our chats - especially the stories behind Susan's art displayed throughout the house. Will definitely visit again.
