“Nice get-away, but needs some attention”
Reviewed June 8, 2013

From Jakarta its about 4-5 hours drive when leaving early, and the place offers very nice surroundings, a very clean and quiet beach and spacious villas.
We asked for 1 near the beach, and glad that we did. The others are quite far up the hill, and since we travelled with a baby it would have meant many walks up and down.
Our 1 bedroom villa was clean, but the age showed in general. The hot water worked on-and-off, depending on the pressure at that time. A bit more light inside would be quite helpful as well. At night though, the outside is very nicely lit, with small lights on each villa. The grass areas and pool are well maintained.
There are some bamboo bridges, which are simply dangerous; some of them have broken handrails, but all are unstable and extremely slippery when some rain has passed.
Breakfast is simple, lunch and dinner are quite good, and prices are very reasonable. Do 'plan' your order well, as ordering last minute upon food arrival another beer or some grated cheese, means either to eat your food without, either to eat your food cold. The staff do appear very helpful and willing, but need some guidance to take it up a notch.

There is an option to walk in the surrounding forrest which offers nice views. Do however bear in mind that there is hardly a path, and often one needs to walk on a 10 cm earthen ridge with a valley on one side. A fall wouldn't kill you, but would not be pleasant at times, so better not take small kids. It is advertised as a 'family walk' which I find doubtful.
We did the walk when it had been raining: it was simply frighting since everything was extremely slippery. We were not wearing proper shoes for a hike like that and were carrying a toddler on our back. I cannot recommend anyone to go there after rainfall. The hotel should not have taken us and should at least have warned us about the condition of the walk. Upside being that they took us there for free.

All in all, for a Java get-away, it is a good option, but don't mistake it for a south Bali look-like, and do accept (and adopt) a quite laid-back attitude.

Room Tip: Close to the sea, not up the hill, i.e. on the south side of the main road.

We enjoyed our stay at Kudalautresort however, for the price, we would expect that the resort would be updated a little more frequently. Our bathroom had mold all over the ground, the rooms were quite dark, the step up into our villa was broken and not repaired for our entire stay. The bamboo bridges used to get around the resort desperately require reinforcement and/or replacement. The staff were absolutely lovely and the food served at the restaurant was the best around, absolutely delicious. The breakfast was nice and simple. We are familiar with travelling through S/E Asia, especially Indonesia and are not critical of things such as power and water outages though my husband suffered terrible mite bites from his pillow on the last day.

We would stay here again but some TLC from the owner is strongly recommended.

Room Tip: Book a room with an ocean view. It's very pretty, beautiful, lush surroundings.

We lived in upper part of resort. It was very high. So there was not comfortable to go up and down every time. Our villa has no glass in one window, so in the evening we found a surprising great number of big ants and one hand-size spider in our bedroom. Security had no insect spray. Of course i understand we were in jungle, but it would not be good for kids to stumble in the house on a big spider.
The main positive thing - beautiful view and swimming in the ocean.

Room Tip: Villas near the beach are mere comfortable for families with kids.

We had 3 great days at Kuda Laut Resort, with 2 other families with kids.
What one needs to know about the resort is the way it is set up: the resort is cut into 2 by a road. On the upper part of the road, the villas - usually 2 bedrooms villas - are set in the hills and are of uneasy access (lots of stairs, and it can be very slippery when it rains). Lots of gorgeous vegetation, some villas (like villa 3) have lovely views (but the trees are now so high that the views of the sea aren't so extensive anymore), and lots of bugs. So not appropriate for families with young kids. On the positive side, it is very quiet, and from what we could see, villa 3 was very clean and well kept.
Those villas are a long way (about 400 m, steep hike) from the beach.

Below the road, towards the beach, there are other villas, the best being the one bedroom villas 12-13-14-15 as they are removed from the road (therefore quiet) and just behind the beach villas (villas 20 and 22, there is also a single cottage, I don't remember its number though..). the beach villas are suitable for a couple of families - 6 to 10 people- and are really a must, super views, large varanda, comfortable rooms with AC and mosquito nets, large living room, a basic kitchen, bathrooms with mandi (it is not a bathtub, it is a mandi, the Indonesian way to have a shower, you take the laddle and pour the water! When the water level goes down, just open the tap to fill it in! Never go inside, it is not hygienic!). The only minus is that there is an opening in the roof of the bathroom, mozzies and bats have a blast!

Breakfast was basic but adequate, cut fruits, yogurt, cake, 2 kinds of bread, corn flakes, fried rice, and an egg station. I always take some cereals for my kids just in case. The ocean side restaurant is quite good - Indonesian fares are very nice and spicy, and Italian dishes always a must with kids-,
The beach is kept clean (a nice change, in contrast with Ocean Queen resort where the beach is disgusting..), the waves good for body surfing.
Overall, a very nice and comfortable stay with a big plus: the staff is adorable and always ready to help.

Tips: leave Jakarta VERYearly (5 am) to get there in about 4 hours, especially during week ends.
And when booking, make sure in what part of the resort you want to be. Be very precise in your questions so that you get the cottage you want.

Room Tip: When booking, ask where the cottage will be situated (beach side or hill side). Avoid hill side if y...

After looking for a place to stay for long weekend, decided on this resort. Went there with our friends, also a family of four. Unfortunately, all the big villas were taken,so we rented two 2-bedroom villas. Ours was on the very top of the hill, overlooking the bay, surrounded by lush greenery... Sounds great, right? Wrong! To get there we had to take what seemed like 10000-stairs stairway, very narrow,no rails. You can't just "pop in quickly and be back in a sec", the way up is like a trip itself, slightly tiring even for my sporty hubby, and for a non-athlete gal like me- exhausting.
The villa. Peeling paint, greasy kitchen furniture, doors and windows and clouds of insects:mosquitoes, flying ants and cockroaches, spiders, bugs and much more. Apparently, they don't believe in fumigation ( although ,when our friends asked for they room to be fumed, the staff did it)... Our bathroom was a separate story: when we arrived, the (pretty dirty) bathtub was filled with water(!) and room was buzzing with mosquitoes. Immediately we decided to drain the water,but...there was no drain! Only a hole in the side of the bathtub, blocked with a piece of wood. Luckily,we managed to remove it and drain the water, which helped to reduce the number of insects but during the shower water would of course just come out and run through the drain hole on the floor. Very strange design solution ,if you ask me.
The food. It wasn't bad. Except for breakfast. Breakfast sucks. Rice, pasta salad, some cut-up fruits, bread, one kind of cereal. That's it. All of this stands outside on the tables, open to flies, sun, dust etc.
The beach. That was the best part. It is clean and not crowded. Kiddos loved playing in the waves!
We had a nice walk on the beach.
The verdict: we'll probably be back, but this time we'll take villa on the beach, bring along LOTS of bug spray and our own breakfast. In this case we may even enjoy our stay...

What a great place to relax from busy daily life, trully a great weekend getaway!
Villa's or bungalows (dont know) are situated at the beach and on hillside overlooking the beautifull bay.

The menu is great, you may choose between Italian or traditional Indonesian dishes like 'rijsttafel', both menus are great! The staff is very helpfull, friendly and speaks English.

This is your pick for staying at the east coast! Loved it!!

Room Tip: I prefer the hillside villas because the beach is near anyway and vieuw are spectecular!
