Our guide said Halebid was known for its exterior carvings and Belur for its interior ones. Although I also liked Halebid’s interior, the central carvings and the pillars in Belur are very detailed and beautiful, with the numerous carvings of dancing women a particular highlight.

There are about 42 masterpieces of dancing women carved out of stone. Also the main hall is another masterpiece with beautiful pillars and ceiling. Visit Halebid also which is around 10km from here.

This is one of the most beautiful temple I've seen, you need whole day to explore this temple completely. You can cover Halebid also on the same day. No where else you can see such intricate sculptures.

We went on our way back from Chickmagalur to Bangalore. It was a wonderful experience going around the temple with details of the pillars, the sculptures inside, outside the temple hearing its history and seeing with the help of the guide. It helps to understand the intricate design of each and every stone art to enjoy and feel the intricate sculpted work.

One half of the sculpture are for dance and expressions, and another portion are depicting the gods. The dance postures are depicted thru the dancer Shantala who has been the inspiration across.

Guides are available at standard fixed rate of Rs.200/- with options of English, Kannada and Tamil languages to explain in.
