“overpriced despite the location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 16, 2013

We had a nice stay here but were left with a whopping great bill that had 10% added to it!! we were charged 165$ a night and had a freezing cold breakfast both mornings we stayed!! lunch and dinner were ok but still expensive, the Gibbon trek was absolutely fantastic( 60$ ) as we spotted two wild apes, a male and a female and heard there amazing singing at first light, we were charged extra for the tour of the primate centre in the afternoon 15$ plus vat at 10% which should have been included in with the price of the gibbon trek. I don't know how on earth you can justify the price of the room and the poor breakfast included, which was blamed on the hardship of getting the staffing levels right!! the average wage is about 80$ a month so another member of staff to cook peoples breakfast wouldn't cost the earth or maybe the owners could get out of bed and turn on the cooker !!! the cost of the private transfers were also over the top and they wouldn't book a room or gibbon tour until we confirmed the car transfer from saigon, although its a nice place there are some issues that need addressing.

The resort locates right by the rapids of Dong nai river so it's offered a spectacular view of the river especially during the monsoon months (July to October). To get there, you need to fully make all necessary travel arrangement either with a local tour agency in Saigon (which is cheaper) that can offer you a rented van with driver or directly with the resort. As mentioned, this only privately owned accommodation allowed inside the Nam Cat Tien National Park. is the closest you can get to nature where one can experience life in the heart of a tropical rain forest. Even though the rate charged is pricey, even with international standards, don't expect much of luxury here! Rooms are basic with no tv and bathroom are large but equipped with regular shower and water heating instruments that you would find in most Vietnamese household. Rooms and huts are built mainly with native materials like bamboos and woods, and the windows have no screens except for a thin mosquito net acting like both a screen and curtains so you can expect any creature may decide to make a visit to your room anytime they want! Also, one thing that may cause some discomfort is electricity is cut at night. With the rate they charge, they should find a way to solve that problem as summer months can be very steamy at night. Not very far from the resort is the Nam Cat Tien Park office where they have 24 hr power service. However, the most outstanding quality of this hotel is its staffs and the stunning view of the river and jungle beyond. The staffs are well trained, courteous and knowledgeable. They know the jungle and its habitat quite well. They go out of their way to make sure your stay there as comfortable as it can get! During our stay there in September of last year, while it's pouring outside, they never minded getting themselves wet to bring umbrella to our rooms! Most of the staffs are youngsters come from nearby villages, so the manager and owner of the lodge has done an excellent job in helping local community by providing jobs, trainings and education to these young men and women.

A visit to Forest Floor Lodge is no pre-packaged city tour or zoo visit but is everything that a family group of five adults wanting to see a bit of Vietnam off the main tourist route in December could hope for !!

Cat Tien National Park is around 3 - 4 hours north of Ho Chi Minh City on the road to Dalat. Forest Floor Lodge and the Park Headquarters are maybe 15km from the main road. We traveled by tourist bus from HCMC and arranged to be dropped off at Tan Phu Post Office. The Lodge picked us up from there. They transported us to the end of the road and the small ferry used for access to the park.

We recommend visitors to have all this mapped out in advance so you know exactly where you are going cos from the moment you get on the bus in HCMC till you arrive at Forest Floor Lodge you may meet no English speakers. We were pleased we had a mobile with a Vietnam SIM and a map with all the local place names. It also helped to have everything written down cos even after two weeks in the country we have yet to say "Cat Tien" and be understood.

Forest Floor Lodge has links with an English University. There is also a Russian research facility close by in the park. There are also park staff and other facilities a kilometer or so down the concrete driveway that links everywhere together.

From the moment we arrived we felt like we were on a different planet, as if we had just dropped into a scene from Avatar.

The staff at Forest Floor Lodge are a delight. They demonstrate all the things that are so wonderful about Vietnamese hospitality. From the first email to the last group photo we felt sincerely welcomed and cared for. This IS eco-tourism at its best!

The accommodation is in purpose designed houses. Ours had two rooms, a covered veranda on three sides and was connected to the main lodge by a pathway. All the beds had mosquito nets.

When the sun goes down and the lights come on you really know you are on the edge of a real rain forest.

The food we ate was exquisitely prepared using locally grown ingredients. You eat in the restaurant - library with the river on one side and the forest on the other.

For those with sharp eyes this is a world of bats, gekos, moths, birds and frogs; of mild little creatures whose eyes glow in the dark and butterflies galore. If you are careless there are leeches too !! Wild gibbons swing in the trees at dawn whilst those in the local sanctuary await their release back into nature. The bears we saw have escaped the worst excesses of the animal trade !! There are treks to archaeological sites and a lake full of alligators which we hope to visit next time.

A visit to Cat Tien and Forest Floor Lodge is a trip to the edge of the wild where the intrepid traveler and those used to a few creature comforts can feel truly at home. We loved it and highly recommend the whole experience.

We were drawn to the Forest Floor Lodge for the gibbon trek, and for the most part we enjoyed our stay. The good bits: seeing wild gibbons! (Amazing, although be aware there's no guarantee and they live in the tree tops so photos are difficult and you need a really strong camera lens, 300mm or more). Our guide was brilliant and we really enjoyed the trek, seeing two gibbons, a black shank langur and wild boar. The staff at the lodge were really great, particularly Mr Thao who went out of his way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. The setting was spectacular, very peaceful and remote, and we liked our tent, which had a great view overlooking the river. We thought the food - despite the mixed reviews on here - was fine; not loads of choice but ok for a few days. Also not as pricey as the info sheet makes out, there are set menus but you can also choose from smaller snacks and simple meals so the $12 lunch and $17 dinner quoted on the price sheet is misleading.

The not-so-good bits: it's a four drive from HCMC and very bumpy with lots of pot-holed roads. Fine, as long as you know what to expect! We opted for the lodge's driver which was expensive ($250 return journey to HCMC) but he was a good driver so would recommend. The tent and lodge were fine for us as a simple, no-frills type experience but jf you've stayed in a luxury safari lodge in Africa or similar, and are looking for the same kind of thing, this may not be for you. It is really quite pricey by Vietnamese standards particularly given there were basic things wrong with our tent - only one comfy chair outside (other one broken), only two towels instead of four, one bathrobe instead of two and occasionally unreliable hot water. There was also nowhere comfy to relax in the main lodge (even a simple deckchair would have been great!). Small details, but could have been easily fixed for a better experience.

Activity-wise, I'd recommend both the gibbon trek for a chance to see them in the wild, plus the trip to Dao Tien rehabilitation centre where you can see them closer up (included in price of gibbon trek, also not really clear on price list). Our tour at Dao Tien was done by volunteer Sylvie who was great and told us loads of interesting info about the gibbons, how they come to the centre and how they go about being released back into the wild.

Overall I would recommend the lodge for the overall experience particularly if you are looking for something completely different to the hectic pace of Vietnam's cities.

Room Tip: Our tent (B2) had a great view overlooking the river

Mixed opinions of forest floors. Aware of the glowing reports above, we were just a little disappointed after the high expectations.

To start with its positives. Home made food is delicious and plentiful, but definitely more in a par with middle uk prices. The location is stunning, the river along side the restaurant etc is just beautiful. The staff all incredibly accommodating and obliging, especially on removing the most humongous spider ever from nxt to our bed, and chasing our some form of rodent in our room. We don't mind these being there, we know it was the jungle!! Having previously been scared of everything as our ignorance didn't allow us to know what to be scared of and what not, we were reassured that the spiders in Veitnam might bite but they won't kill u!! And the rodent was fine just noisy!!

As an Eco lodge electricity goes out 11-6, which does make night time very uncomfortable!!

We went specifically for the gibbons, however the night before being booked to go we were told not the right season and we shouldn't go. Disappointing as we are more mammal lovers. Think jungle may be more suited to those with more appreciation of birds and abotony. Sadly when we went to EAST the following morning (which was great), the man there told us that wasn't true about gibbons as he saw two the day before...frustrating! He said he hears very mixed reviews. We instead chose the crocodile lake tour and did manage to see one croc.

The lodge is lovely, however very expensive, everything has a price that not initially advertised. Good but cleanly not for those on a budget. Wifi also didn't work entire time

The lodge is also incredibly difficult to get to unless u wanna hitch ure rucksack onto a motor cycle. They kind of have u over a barrel with the transfer costs to get to and from there! Try do provide a list of different options however

this place is stunning...an unbelievable location, gorgeous accommodation, wonderful tours, fantastic staff and delicious food. I cannot recommend forest floor lodge highly enough.

Myself, my partner and brother stayed for two nights and I wish we could have stayed longer. The staff couldn't be more helpful, we swapped dates at the last minute and they were very accommodating.

The location of this place is amazing and Ive never arrived anywhere in such style...all organised by the forest floor lodge.

I also loved the ethos of this place and how much they contribute towards the environment.

Just a brillianct place...I can't wait to return!

This place is a must for anyone who wants to see some wildlife in Vietnam and 'likes a bit of jungle'. We had a super bungalow style room which was clean and comfortable with all that is needed and more. The were very friendly and helpful and the food was excellent - and I speak as a vegetarian. Some meals were made especiially for me. We watched hornbills from the restaurant - you don't even have to go for a walk to do some good birding, although there are some good walks from the lodge. And butterflies!! Make sure you bring insect repellant for some of the more unwanted creatures! Great stay!
