Visited The Aston yesterday for lunch with family. Both parties travelled so neither of us are local. The exterior is a little uninspiring but inside is warm and welcoming. It's bigger than you think with some really nice touches. There is a nice garden at the rear which would be lovely in the summer.
The menu was great- we had two roast beef, a burger and a steak and ale pie- all were pronounced excellent. The large Yorkshire puddings deserve an honourable mention! Wines were good.
Desserts were also really tasty.
The service was excellent- friendly and personable.
Good value prices.
It was quite busy with families- most people seems to be having the whole roast chicken with all the trimmings, really nicely presented and carved at the table. This was really good value at under £25 for four.
Good toilets, with baby changing facilities (in the ladies only, which is a little annoying) and highchairs.
All in all, a really good lunch in a place that deserves to do well.

My friends and I visited the Aston in the second week of December for Christmas celebrations. We had a great experience all round with a friendly welcome and a relaxed meal in a comfortable setting. We dined from the Christmas menu and between us tried most options from the menu, including the venison, fish and the veggie option which we all agreed were very tasty. We particularly enjoyed the desserts, the chocolate torte being the absolute winner. We stayed on for a few drinks in the bar after dinner by the open fire which was lovely and Christmassy. I plan to return to try their normal menu in the new year with my family. Highly recommend for a tasty meal with lovely friendly service and nice atmosphere.

Not been for a long time. Went with friends for a Christmas meal. Not very jolly, no crackers no atmosphere. Meal warm with processed meat. Staff pushing for next course too quickly. No mince pies or chocolate and coffee extra.

Table reservation - Thursday 20th december 2012.
My wife and I have dined at The Aston on a few occasions and have really enjoyed the experience. When we heard that friends from Australia were visiting we decided to book a table for dinner. Upon arrival the bar area was very quiet which surprised us as the car park appeared to be busy. We sat by the fire to enjoy a pre-dinner drink and eventually moved through to the restaurant area which was quite busy. As we hadn't seen our friends for some time, we spent some time in conversation before selecting from the menu. We all decided to choose the Christmas themed menu. Three of us selected the deep fried Camembert and the fourth choose the Cullen Skink. When our starters arrived were were disappointed to find just two small pieces of Camembert with some green leaf and a tiny "fan" of pear. The Cullen Skink was more like a creamed soup and did not have any pieces of fish, potato or onion as it should have if it were faithful to the traditional recipe. The main courses were then served and the three of us who had selected Venison haunch were surprised that it arrived very thinly sliced (almost resembling sliced beef from the delicatessen counter at a local supermarket) There was a lack of the deep, rich, game flavour which is a key note of this meat. The venison was served with roasted potatoes and a medley of winter vegetables which were well cooked. No one at the table made comment about the food as we were all deep in conversation but suffice to say, there were no favourable comments about the quality of the meal. After the main course was cleared, one of our party selected a desert and the others selected the cheese platter which was good apart from there being no butter provided for the biscuits and the grapes came in the form of a ?? (chutney). In retrospect, we should have made comment at the time of service but as we had friends who we hadn't seen for a long time, I didn't wish to embarrass them or us by complaining. However, I don't think we had good value with this meal (£133.00) and I would have to consider quite carefully about returning again anytime soon.

Hello and thanks for your feedback regarding your trip to the Aston. I'm sorry to hear that your visit to the Aston wasn't as positive as you expected.

I am surprised to hear that you thought that the draft beer didn't taste quite right. We routinely thoroughly clean the beer lines once a week, which is much more frequent than industry standards. We have never received any negative comments about the quality of the beer (generally comments are of the opposite nature) so I am assured that we are treating the lines and maintaining the quality of draught to the highest standards.

We would generally hope that if a customer was unhappy with timings, or the quality of food / drinks in our venue, it would be flagged at the time of the visit, in which instance we are able to do everything possible to rectify any problems and make your visit a positive experience.

We do appreciate any feedback, as it helps us to continually improve our offering and customer service.

All the best.
