“Some Very Good Aspects But Not For Us”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2014

We booked the Red Lion as a one night stopover while travelling on the M40. We arrived late (8pm) due to M25 traffic and found the pub very busy (a good sign). Nevertheless we received a friendly welcome and were pointed to our room. This involved climbing a narrow spiral staircase with luggage. The room itself was clean and well equipped but small. The double bed was against one wall meaning one person had to climb over the other to get in or out. We don't find that acceptable and although the room was small the bed could have been positioned just away from the wall to give access. Just as surprising was the bathroom which was situated on a mezzanine floor reached by a narrow staicase. It was well equipped with a large free standing bath in the centre of the room, very fashionable but diificult for the older generation to use the shower as there were no grab handles. Fine for youngsters. The walls were also very thin so you could hear people talking in the adjacent room. We then went for dinner which was very good - standard pub food but very well done and some good real ale properly kept. Breakfast was good with a choice of cereals, fruit etc and any variation on the full English breakfast. Dan, the manager, was an excellent host who could not do enough to help. Overall an excellent pub with good food and beer but you would need to be fully able to easily use the rooms (or room 8 at least). We are able bodied but older so found the room difficult. I think Old English Inns should make this clear on their web site and when booking. I am not sure if all rooms had mezzanine bathrooms or whether access might be easier from the fire escapes. For thses reasons we probably would not stay again.

Room Tip: Check which rooms have mezzanine bathrooms

Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent visit. Dan is glad to here that you enjoyed the Ale & food over your stay. But is sad to here you didn't like your room & if you had told him during you stay we would of moved you to a different room which would have been more suitable for your needs. As very room in the hotel as different which is what you expected from a building this old & with that in mined hopes you will stay again in the future'

We had a very pleasant stay at the Red Lion, all the staff are very helpful and friendly, especially Dan the manager, nothing is too much trouble at breakfast.

The building is a typical Old English Inn, in need of some TLC but Dan has made and has plans for more improvements but it does have a steep narrow staircase so is unsuitable for those very unsteady on their feet. Our bedroom was a bit qwerky, the bathroom is on an open mezzanine floor above the bed, a bit unusual to watch the television downstairs whilst sat on the loo !! Just make sure you know the person well who you share the room with well.

The food is always reliable in the Old English Inns and was what you would expect.

The area around the Red Lion is well worth investigating, some lovely villages and towns worth a visit, Cold Norton, Morton In Marsh, Burton On Water and defiantly the Hook Norton Brewery.

Room Tip: do not except room number 7,8 & 9 these had the over head toilets.

I stayed for a couple of nights recently (March 2014) with my partner and we were greeted by friendly and smiling hotel staff. During our stay the professionalism and politeness of the hotel staff was exemplary. I really would like to extend my thanks to Dan, Natalie, Lucy, Jennah and Julie (I hope I got their names right!) for making us welcome and ensuring we thoroughly enjoyed our time at the hotel.

Our hotel room was on the first floor, up a narrow, spiral staircase, and was to the front of the building (facing the main road). It was clean and quirky in a way that only an olde-worlde hotel could be; i.e. there wasn't a straight edge anywhere to be seen! This was not a problem and only added to the charm. The facilities were good, plenty of hot water and wifi access was very good, too. The bed, whilst a little soft for my liking, was nevertheless comfy. I was a little worried about the noise levels as our room was above a bar area and facing the main road. However, once the bar had closed it was actually very quiet. Even the main road fell silent and I was able to sleep well.

Breakfast time offered a good selection of hot and cold options - from fruit and cereals to full-English to porridge (and plenty in between). The cooked breakfasts were nicely prepared and quickly brought to the table and the self-serve buffet (fruit, cereals, pastries, etc.) were all nice and fresh each day.

Despite being very much 'traditional pub grub' the evening meals were nicely presented, well cooked and of a generous size (offering good value for money). The serving staff were efficient and polite and it was for those reasons that we decided to have all our evening meals at the hotel during our stay there.

I would happily recommend this hotel as a great place to stay if you are in the area. My partner and I are hoping to visit again in the future.

"Old English Inns are known for the warmth of their hospitality - and the comfort of their rooms. You'll also fall in love with the cosy bars, often with crooked walls and low beams where you will enjoy relaxing with a glass of wine or real ale. The friendly restaurants serve a variety of delicious meals - including a hearty full English breakfast..." This is a quote from the Old English Inns brochure and I could not agree more. Our recent stay at The Red Lion Adderbury was really really nice. OK it may have its little quirks but isn't that part of staying in an olde worlde setting? Its now Monday morning but the weekend at the Red Lion has set me up for the week ahead.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front are on the main road but do have a nice view over the green. That said they...

We stayed for a weekend as a party of eight and couldn't fault the quality of service we received, despite having a power cut during the first evening.

As mentioned in other reviews, some parts of the hotel are in need of a refurb, but overall it is clean, the food is fine and the atmosphere good for both food and drink. But it is the accommodating nature of the staff that shone through, we'll definitely be returning.

We stopped at the Red Lion for one night in February 2014 with our daughter and son-in-law. We were greeted by Claudia, who soon sorted out our rooms and presented a very welcoming face of the hotel. We climbed the narrow, winding staircase to our rooms and negotiated the maze of corridors typical of old buildings like this. There is hardly a flat surface in the place, but this adds to its charm.

The rooms were comfortable and quite well appointed with the usual TV, tea and coffee and toiletries provided. We had rooms 7 and 12 and room 7 would definitely benefit from a bit of a makeover. The window was cracked and there were traces of black mould on one of the walls. The bathroom was great with a bath and shower and plenty of hot water. In fairness to the hotel, I spoke to the manager and he has only been there two weeks, and has plans to smarten the rooms up. The beds were excellent and we all had a great night’s sleep.

We had a few drinks in the bar and then went into the restaurant to eat. The food and wine was excellent and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The only slight negative was the attitude of the waitress, who seemed to feel we were a bit of an inconvenience. She looked put out every time we asked for drinks or extras to be brought to the table, and as we were the last diners left made a rather noisy point of preparing the tables around us for breakfast. Minor issues perhaps, but when spending over £400 for a one night stay we felt justified in demanding high standards of service. To be fair, this aside everyone else we dealt with was very accommodating so no real complaints. Special mention again for Claudia – lovely lady from Portugal.

We had breakfast before hitting the road and while pretty standard (cereal, fruit juice, cooked breakfast etc.), it was all fresh and well presented. We all had a really great time at the Red Lion, and we would certainly stay there again. Recommended!

The hotel is a 400-year old coaching inn, but don't worry, the rooms have definitely been refurbished since then. The floors slope upstairs and each room is pretty unique, but everything is very clean and nicely decorated. Our room had an issue with the shower - there was a screw sticking out - but when we told management they were very apologetic.

We ate dinner in the pub downstairs the night that we stayed there. They serve traditional English pub fare. It was alright, but not amazing. We also had a free breakfast - that was included with our stay. It was the usual buffet, pastries, fruit, cheese, etc., but was nice.

Overall, it was a very nice stay. Natalie, who checked us in and out and served all of our meals, was fantastic and made sure that our stay was really pleasant.
