“Lovely fish and chips”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013

I love the Red Lion. I had forgotten how truly marvellous their fish and chips is! I also ordered their chocolat fudge brownie which was delicious. As for service, the staff is warm and lovely. Thank you so much. Me and my friend who I hadn't seen for 10 years had a great day!

My husband and i stayed here recently for two nights during some rather unseasonable wintery weather and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The welcome we had from Derek and his staff was warm and friendly. We stayed in room 15 which was at the top of a winding staircase in the 'attic'. It was a large room which was adequately furnished but could benefit from more soft furnishings and a splash of colour. The shower was over the bath but not attached to the wall therefore you have to kneel in the bath to have a 'shower'. There is no shower curtain hence the floor of the bathroom gets a soaking. However the shower itself is very strong and not affected by water pressure. None of this however put a dampener on our experience. The food and service in the restaurant was excellent with a good selection, but be warned..........the chicken balti is extremely HOT which to be fair the staff do warn you about. The service was always with a smile, very quick and efficient.
We would definitely visit Derek and his team again in the future and would recommend it. Well done.

We stayed at The Red Lion for a two night break. The hotel is close to Banbury and has easy access to other historic areas.

We have stayed here previously but this time decided to book a feature room which was very spacious, had a large TV and comfy chairs. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant.

Special thanks to Derek who made our stay enjoyable; although he was extremely busy in the hotel we also found him clearing the snow outside the hotel; what a dedicated manager! Despite being so busy he remained cheerful, friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Thank you.

Room Tip: If you prefer a spacious room, the feature room has it all.

Stayed here for a couple of nights with work.

I chose the hotel based on the location and the previous good reviews of the hotel.

Firstly, the negative points. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere - which I guess is both a plus and a minus depending on why you are visiting. The other negative is the room. I was allocated a room upstairs, right at the back. No firstly navigating the narrow winding staircase (with luggage) was very tricky and anyone with mobility issues would really struggle up and down these stairs I think.

Secondly, the room itself was not great. It was very small, quite dated and old fashioned - not great by any stretch of the imagination.

Now for the good points. The majority of the staff (with the exception of a surly young guy who checked me in) were great - especially the restaurant staff. The food, both in the bar area and in the restaurant was excellent too and is highly recommended. In fact the pub/restaurant bit is the real plus for this establishment - the accommodation could be improved a lot.

There was a small car park around the back and outside seating which is ideal in nice weather.

Just returned from a weekend with my wife. Olde World charm with Twenty-First Century professionalism. From the time we introduced ourselves we were treated with the consummate professionalism of the staff. Each and everyone of them knew our names and were courteous and friendly with nothing too much trouble for them. Excellent food, wine and a special real ale to round off the night.
We used the hotel as a base to tour the area and how informative and helpful the staff were when planning our journeys. Only downside; if you go there with children be aware of the almost boiling water that comes out of the taps! Would we return? Most definitely.

We stayed in room 16 which was full of character. Stone fireplace, stone nooks and crannies, canopy over a very comfortable bed. Stair case to other rooms go over part of this room so is quite noisy as we're the gusts above us, we could hear everything, even them talking and flushing the loo! Luckily this do not ocur when we were trying to sleep. The showroom was basic and the fitting looked a little tired. The outside needs some maintenance as the coach lihpght were smashed, the front car park quite rutted. But at the end of the day we enjoyed the stay. The food in the restaurant was good if a little predictable. The staff were very rushed and service at the bar and in the restaurant was lacking. They really do need more staff at peak times as the ladies worked extremely hard but clearly could not cope. Would we go again? Yes definitely. The place is good but could be excellent.

We stayed at the Red Lion last Friday and we loved it! The hotel was full of character, the food was fantastic and the room was clean and comfortable! What more can you ask for! The customer service was 1st class in our eyes, Derek and his team made us feel like valued customers from the minute we walked through the door. Nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended!
