Long history, welcoming landlord, good ale, low oak beams, fireplaces, winding stairs and rooms in the attic, all set in the village green. Smashing. We stopped off here on our way back to Scotland from Portsmouth and a motorbike tour of Spain It was great to get that first pint of real ale. Good wine selection too. Very warm welcome from Ken , his wife and staff. Our bedroom was in the loft and it was a steep winding climb but worth it. The bed was very comfy, the sheets etc clean and crisp, the bathroom a good size and equally clean. Large fluffy towels . No shower as such but a hand held spray over the bath. Plenty of hot water and instant heat from the radiators. Large flat screen TV. All the staff we came across were excellent and worked very hard.. Breakfast was cooked to order and was very good. The only dissapointment was our dinner on the evening of arrival. We tried to order a meal without garlic and at this point we learned that they did not make any of their meals in-house, even those on the specials board. What we had was just OK and the table next to us were a bit unhappy with theirs. We spoke to Ken and suggested he speak to his supplier. An element of real home cooking would set it off nicely. That said we would consider staying there again.

Very good staff made up for not the most comfortable room. The two meals we had were excellent as was the beer and wine. Our room was adequate but the minute shower was difficult to get in, let alone wash. The building is very old and attractive but the staircase to the rooms could be a bit of a nightmare for older people. Our stay was excellent, however, because of the great atmosphere generated by the staff. They were very helpful as at all Old English Inns.

Over a number of years have visited with family & friends and business associates. We keep going back because the place is steeped in history and has a unique feel about it. I have booked business associates in for dinner and overnight stays with good reports although I do recall putting a German colleague in with amusing results. He was 6'7" ins tall and an ex Rugby player. I had never seen the rooms but suffice it to say that he will dine out on his experience for years to come. Dont be put off (unless you are a 6'7" rugby player).

Recent visits to the Restaurant have been inconsistant. Sometimes very good, sometimes poor. I visited with Family two weeks ago 9 of us. Food was OK (nothing special and cxertainly not as good as we have experienced before) and whilst the service was cheerful and friendly you got the impression the staff were looking for an early end to service. We were fed and watered with undue haste whereas we had expected to spend the evening enjoying dinner and each others company.

I stayed with my wife there for a night. We were attending a wedding nearby, so the hotel was full with friends and family. We had a really nice room. With a view to the front of the hotel. The bathroom was clean and modern. Large and comfy bed with a large flat tv. We enjoyed our stay. The stairs to get to the rooms are a little steep, but nothing too bad. The room and bathroom were clean and the breakfast was great with wonderful attention.

Would stay here again.

Only visited for dinner so cannot comment on rooms but food and service was very pleasant, and the village is very picturesque and well worth a wander around. Ate on a Sunday evening so the restaurant was a little quiet but a decent, well priced menu and friendly service

We booked to stay at the Red Lion for one night and were thoroughly impressed with the place, the staff, the room and the whole experience.

On arrival we were greeted by the manager of the hotel. She checked our details in a friendly and speedy fashion, and offered us a reserved table in the restaurant. We declined as we wanted to leave our options open at that stage.

The room was clean, modern, and open plan with the bathroom being up a flight of stairs in the loft area. We liked this although it won't be everyone's cup of tea. We thought it a quirky, characterful and innovative use of space!

We eventually did decide to eat. The meal is standard pub fayre, but was quickly served and tasted good. In fact, the food was better than my expectations of it.

The bar and serving staff were all very friendly. I thought they were very happy to help and seemed to be very happy in their work.

The inn itself is full of character and the fireplace was especially spectacular.

The bedding was good and clean, and the mattress was firm. The whole room was light and airy and we spent a good night's sleep.

Breakfast in the morning was extremely good. I was particularly impressed with the sausages which had a good meat content in them. The person in charge of the breakfast service, Chris, deserves special mention. I was particularly impressed by the way that he remembered and used my name while taking the order. We did mess him around a little by moving tables but he took it all in his stride and was courteous throughout. All in all a very good start to the day.

We checked out and this was also done in a friendly and competent manner.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone travelling around Oxfordshire. I would definitely book there again.
