“Really relaxing stay at Red Lion”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2012

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Red Lion in Adderbury. The hotel was really nice and the room we had (number 16) was lovely, nice bed good furniture and lots of character. We ate in the restaurant for breakfast on both days and the choice was really good especially before 10.00 when there is a choice of cereals and pastries as well as an excellent choice of cooked food. We ate in the restaurant on both nights and had the 2 main courses for £9.95 the first night with a starter for £2.50 and a dessert for £2.50 again the food was really good especially the fish and chips. The second night we picked from the main menu and there was alot of choice including specials. Again very good food. The bar was really nice and the staff were all friendly and couldn't do enough to help. We would definitely stay again.

Just returned from 2 night break. Staff were friendly and helpful and food was good and excellent value (especially the 2 Mains for £9.95 (full sized portions)
Cleanlines was good but the hotel is "tired" and in need of some TLC.
Narrow twisty stairs add atmosphere but would be a problem to anyone with mobility problems.
Avoid the dreaded room 8. Bed against the wall and bathroom is an open balcony above the bed.Bath is free standing with hand held shower.

Stayed here for our Anniversary in room 6 with its four-poster bed - very comfortable. However, the bathroom had no towel rail (the fixings remained so I presume it had been broken off) so all the towels had to sit on the bath or toilet. (How much does a new towel rail cost?). And the kettle in the room had so much limescale my wife refused to drink her tea after she had seen inside.
Lunch on day one had a partially uncooked jacket potato that was replaced. Dinner that night had a hair in the mashed potato. When I complained about that I was told all the cooks wear hats ......... yes, but they also had beards! We ate out the second night.
The waitress at dinner day one and breakfast day two must have been on something as she dashed around like a tornado, insisting that we placed our orders immediately "as it takes about 30 minutes to prepare the food". And breakfast on day two they had run out of smoked salmon "as the delivery hadn't arrived" (it was Easter Sunday after all).

Overall, a nice place that was let down by several niggly little things that could have easily been put right.

We stayed for 3 nights last week at this 'olde 'worlde' pub in a comfortable, clean room. The breakfast menu choice was fantastic & the food too. We found the staff very helpful especially on the 2nd day when they had a major power failure - the electricity was off for approx 14 hours. Luckily 'The Bell' Pub in the village provided nice evening meals so we ate there. Large candles were provided to light our room - very romantic for young couples but as we're 'over the hill' we tried to read the papers by torchlight - giving up by 10pm., blowing out the candles & having an early night!!

Room Tip: Front room facing the road & the west was quiet - lovely sunsets over the village green during...

This was an exceptionally disappointing visit. We booked for Sunday lunch, and although the pub was not overly busy, had to wait around an hour for our food (Sunday roast that, as the staff told us, was cut off a cooked joint and re-heated). When we did get the food, the meat was overcooked, the vegetables raw - literally, and the chef heard roaring in the kitchen confirmed that what was happening was shambolic. The staff eventually tried to placate us - with free dessert - but too little far too late. If you can't cook the basics correctly, and within an acceptable timeframe, you should not be running a kitchen. Your guests come in good faith and you let them down big time. Would not recommend.

We appreciate all feedback from our guests be it good or bad. We have addressed the quality of the vegetables and the chefs will not be serving the vegetables al dente as they have been in the past. We are always looking at ways to improve the speed of service from the Kitchen Team.

Stopped for lunch on a recent warm and sunny March afternoon. Plenty of seating outside from which to enjoy the view over the village. Friendly landlord and quite a large menu. We opted for the special two for £9.95 menu and wished we had not as soon as it arrived, first the condiments, napkins and even the cutlery are dumped on the table in a small picnic basket, looks a good idea until you spot a dirty used napkin amongst them and the cutlery is not even wrapped in a clean one so just scrabble around the bottom to find a pair. The food arrived very quickly which always sends alarms bells and it was clear to see that the dry warmed up chicken breast and very, very soft potatoes had been warmed up. smeared with a bit of sauce and a small handful of bagged lettuce dumped on the side, my ham egg and chips were dreadful, large chips totally sodden with fat, wet ham, dry peas , the eggs were the only slightly redeeming feature as were at least freshly cooked, thankfully hard to have preprepared fried eggs!! It may appear good value but really its not if its blooming awful is it. Real shame as has great potential. There are many pubs offering this kind of deal, it does not have to be this bad. Could not tell if the main menu would be prepared any better but I very much doubt it, how hard is it to at least provide good chips?

We recently spent 2 nights in this hotel. Generally, we were very happy. The staff were friendly and efficient. It is a chain hotel, so the food was of the type usually found in a chain, but it was perfectly OK. Our only criticism being that the main courses were far too much for us, so there was a lot of waste. There was a good wine list, but unfortunately, they were out of the one we ordered the first night, and when we later ordered 2 Grand Marniers, they only had enough left for one. Just a bit more attention to detail needed in the drinks department.

We stayed in the feature room, number 16, on the ground floor. It is a nice large room with a sofa, and tea/coffee making facilities. However, the mattress is terrible!! It needs to be replaced very soon.
