“Hop Skip & Jump from Manaus to Amazon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2010

Quick stay in Manaus and luckily our boat pick up for Tiwa was at the pier at Tropical. 30mins odd across the river & we were at Tiwa. Wondrful resort. Lovely air-conditioned well equiped cottages around a lake with a swimming pool made the stay comfortable. Decent food and me being vegeteran they had lots of options. Guides were very nice & s also the tours. A great option for the Amazon experience.

  • Liked — cottge on stilts around a lake
  • Disliked — windows were covered with a material through which air could pas through so it was useles keeping the air-condition on during the day when it was unbearably hot

We spent 3 days with 2 kids 7 & 9 years old.
We paid the price of a 5 star hotel but received the service of a backpacker category.
Nobody was waiting for us at the airport so we had to call and wait. The transfer to the boat and finally to the hotel was difficult as we had to go through the stairs and walk on the beach, not so nice with « normal » luggages.
The food was very average and definitely the juices had more water (from where?) than fruits.
The tours were well organized.
The overall give an impression of getting old and lacking some basic maintenance.
The electricity is cut several hours during the day. The service is really poor.

We (a couple in their sixties) spend 5 nights in the Tiwa. The resort is well designed, practical and well kept (in the room as well as the surrounding grounds). The buffets are good. We had to eat a la carte a few days because there were only 3 couples in the hotel: in those cases the choice was between "fish, meat or poultry" - but it tasted good.
We were fortunate to have a guide who knows the jungle inside out from his own experience and - miracle! - speaks excellent English (his name is Washington). True, the jungle tracks are easy (but muddy sometimes) but that is what we prefer: sleeping in our own sweat, outside in an uncomfortable hammock, bitten by mosquitos, is not what we were after. So we were happy with the programme; it is always possible to book the more adventurous tours with the hotel, at a very reasonable price.
We were picked up at the airport as agreed (taxi and boat waiting for us) and transferred back without any problem, on time.
Take care of your invoice for drinks: the prices are not mentioned on the taps you sign to your room - and we were in for a bit of a surprise at the end of our stay (the wine is pretty expensive...). The restaurant staff also needs more training (very friendly, but not efficient).
If we go back to the rea, we would not hesitate staying at the Tiwa again.

My husband and I joined our son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren in Manaus to enjoy 3 days and 2 nights at Tiwa. We had checked out the website but were a little apprehensive about the quality of the accomodations. We spent the previous night at the Tropical Manaus and were met by our guide in the lobby. This being Brazil the boat was a little late in arriving but it was worth the wait. Our guide from Tiwa was personable and very knowlegeable. On arrival we were offered some juice (from local sources) and we gave it a try. The temperature was in the high 90s at least and the humidity must have been 100. We were given keys to our rooms, cabins in a semicircle around a small lake, that were rustic but comfortable. The so called air conditioning was on (room sized) but since there were only louvered doors it didn't do much to keep the room cool. There was a fan that made the climate bearable. This being the jungle, it was more comfortable than expected.

The food was served buffet style and was excellent. I ate many things that I had never heard of but we all felt well fed and enjoyed the new tastes (even the 8 and 11 year old grandchildren). There were many excursions; a jungle walk, a boat trip to the meeting of the waters (don't miss this), hunting for caiman and fishing for piranha.

All in all I would heartily recommend the Tiwa Jungle Lodge to all except those looking for rustic, physically challenging adventures, very young children and anyone who has difficulty climbing in and out of boats and tolerating very hot weather. IIs a soft adverture with most of the trappings of civilization.

  • Liked — The opportunity to experience a totally new environment.
  • Disliked — The heat.....even tho it goes with the territory!

Had a great stay at TIWA. The cuisine was delicious and interesting. It was a lovely spread which included choices of beef, chicken and fish dishes; wonderful soups (including the famous Piranha soup), traditional desserts (flans, cakes, homemade ice cream). And I loved their purified water fountain; ice cold water available 24/7 for your bottle refills. A lovely idea!
The twice-daily tours were led by trained, knowledgeable, Tour Guides and kept to small groups. They included a visit to a rubber plantation, Piranha fishing, catching Cayman, etc. Very informative and lots of fun! I’m planning a trip back to TIWA next year to see it in the rainy season! Go-you’ll love it!

  • Liked — Lovely setting; friendly staff. Just the right balance of service and privacy.
  • Disliked — In dry season the walk from the boat to the front desk.

Here's a summary of our stay:

Pros:
- Nice and clean bungalows with fan and AC
- Nice Pool
- Friendly staff
- On Rio Negro, fewer mosquitoes.

Cons:
- There were screen windows that we couldn't close which allowed the AC to flow out...not very 'eco' at all.
- The food buffet was not very good.
- Not much wildlife around that area. We saw more wildlife in Costa Rica. We didn't see any monkeys. Just a couple small caimans and parrots. A dolphin in the Amazon River. You need to go further into the Amazon if you want to see more wildlife.

If you're looking for an adventure, this is not for you. If you have small kids with you, then it's for you. Also, make sure you double check your transfer to and from the airport. We waited for 30 minutes for them to finally pick us up. And then on our way back to the airport, they forgot to send a taxi to take us to the taxi. They eventually paid for that taxi ride.
