Had a lunch at the El Cancho y la Coneja restaurant, which was recommended to me by some local people. When arrived, they said it was still closed, but the staff were willing to open the restaurant 1 hour before schedule. This I call service!

Had tacos, and have to admit they were just delicious. Big portion, fresh ingredients, tasty, cozy environment. Superb choice! And quite reasonably priced. Highly recommended. A popular place at La Barra.

This restaurant is in La Barra, just over the bridge from the ultra-posh resort town of Punta del Este. We found it to be a welcome oasis that offered exquisitely prepared food at a fraction of the price we’d been paying at many of the highly touted eateries just a few kilometers down the road. In fact, the entire bill was less than the cost of a single entrée we ordered the previous night and the food, in our opinion, was significantly better. El Chancho y La Coneja, according to Horacio, the gracious host and owner, means the pig and the rabbit – a tribute to the English pubs he and his wife, Karina (who is the head chef), frequented during their one-year stay in England.
The cuisine is fusion – a triumphant blend of home-made and gourmet; like mama would have made had she spent a year or two at a cordon bleu academy. Each dish we had was a true delight and unlike anything we had ever previously experienced. For example, I had the Tacos, which turned out to be home made shells that were baked rather than fried and stuffed with a very un-Mexican blend of chicken and veggies. My wife had the Ravioli stuffed with dill-seasoned lamb topped with a delicate pesto and sun-dried tomato sauce and oven baked with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. The restaurant also offers a variety of organic, vegetarian and gluten-free options for the diet conscious.
For desert try their Ricotta Cheese Torte (for some reason, it’s not on the menu) which is reminiscent of a decadently rich New York Cheese Cake. The atmosphere is deliciously homey and unpretentious and the attentive service truly made us feel more like family than guests.
