“Amazing Winter Retreat with Nordic Ski Trails”
Reviewed December 30, 2009

Sheep Mountain Lodge sits perched on the side of a glacial valley with a multi-colored mountain looming overhead on one side and a backlit vista of the jagged Chugach Mountains across the drainage. Comfy individual cabins, a shared bathhouse with hot tub, and wood-fired sauna make this a fantastic refuge from the Alaskan winter when we were there just after Christmas. The owners are a young family who do their best to accommodate guests from grooming Nordic ski trails to preparing a wonderful pasta dinner in the depths of winter. We are avid cross country skiers and found this to be a perfect refuge for a few days of skiing, tubbing, and getting away from the city life in Anchorage. The moonlit trails were exquisite.

In winter, food service is very limited and the nearest inn is about ten miles down the highway. A microwave in the cabin we stayed in allowed for heating nachos, burritos, and other similar fare.

Traveling with my wife and our two adult children on a family getaway. Last stop on an extended road trip around the state before flying out of Anchorage. The scenery along the Glenn Highway is breathtaking, with views of the Talkeetna Mountains to the north and the Chugach to the south. About 15 minutes away from Matanuska Glacier. Clean, well-appointed cabins and an outstanding restaurant (worth a stop even if you're just driving by). Short hiking trails above the property. Only minor complaint (and I'm stretching this a bit) is its rather close proximity to the highway, although it's located on a hillside above the road grade and noise isn't very bad.

We were traveling to Kennicott Alaska. After the long flight in to Anchorage we drove to Sheep Mountain Lodge to spend the night. The cabin was comfortable with a queen bed and a twin. Sheep Mountain has a system of hiking trails behind the cabins. The views of the valley are beautiful. It is located about 10 miles from the Matanuska Glacier. Food at the lodge is very good. On our way back from Kennicott, we stopped at the restaurant again for lunch.

In a few words- Beautiful views, very comfy cabin, and really good food.

We rented a standard cabin and could not have been happier with it. When we arrived, we were a little intimidated by the on-site 4th of July party being held by a large group of bikers, but they turned out to be fine and we couldn't hear a peep from our cabin. The cabin itself (#11) was great. There was plenty of room, a decent bathroom, and a great porch from which we enjoyed the view. We went on a few hikes on the grounds- no wildlife, but really pretty wildflowers and well-maintained trails. We ate all of our meals in the restaurant since there is nothing else nearby- all of our meals were delicious, though a little pricey.

I would definitely recommend Sleep Mountain to anyone who wanted some R&R in a beautiful setting away from the more touristy areas of Alaska.

The room was clean and nice, the surroundings beautiful and the food very good but it was out of the way. We booked at night in Palmer on the way from Seward to Denali. Palmer is about 45 miles from Anchorage and about 1/2 way between Seward and Denali. When we reached Palmer I called to get a directions and found that we had another 60-70 miles to drive. Had I realized that when I booked I would have looked elsewhere.

We stayed in one of the smaller cabins without a kitchen as we were travelling on a motorbike and would not have anything with us to cook and there are no shops nearby. The cabin was cosy and clean but there was no sofa to sit on, just a bench and table with chairs besides the bed, which was not great. This would have made all the difference in the room.

Besides that the place is clean the staff are good and the food is worth the stop, if you pass by. Some of the best food we had in Alaska as they really do make the effort.

Great views both with and without cloud!
