“Great Stay”
Reviewed July 25, 2014

This is a cozy little stop along the highway with individual cabins that are private, quiet, comfortable and cozy with a beautiful view all around. It includes a nice little restuarant and a pleasant and friendly staff. We drove in late one evening as the restuarant was closing and the girl who helped us was so kind. We just wanted a quick place for the night and all the cheaper rooms were gone but she had cabins available and gave us a little discount since it was so late. It was so nice I didn't want to go to sleep.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon. Our cheaper rooms are Guest House rooms with a shared bath - they were built in 2012 and have a shared bath. A economical option with a shared bath, the rooms are comfortable with 2 queen beds.

Coming all the way from Australia we found ourselves in an alien landscape. Snow covered mountains and a nearby glacier. But then there was Sheep Mountain Lodge with its log cabin cosiness, home cooked food and genuine friendliness. Nothing alien about this nor of Anjanette and her partner who have created a slice of Alaskan hospitality in such a remote and beautiful landscape. We had a large comfortable cabin that lacked nothing. Our only regret was staying just one night. We met Anjanette's sled dog Gasket and learned about the Iditarod Sled Race. If other Australians are thinking of Alaska then Sheep Mountain Lodge might impress them as it did us.

Green Features: We liked the owners' approach to environmentalism and the way they have built in very green practices to the lodge.

We stayed here one night while driving through this area. The view from the cabin was beautiful and the inside was nice too. We stayed in one of the larger cabins and we wish we could have stayed longer. Two beds, a pull out couch in the living area, a small kitchen and a bathroom. The entire area is beautiful! We at dinner and breakfast at the lodge. We tried the sourdough pancakes and they were excellent, although after seeing the table next to us get the cinnamon roll, we all wished we had ordered that instead! It was huge!!! We will definitely stay here the next time we visit Alaska.

It was our R&R stopover for two nights enroute to Dawson City and what a good move it was too. A first class stay in a log cabin that left us both chilled and refreshed for our onward journey. We had pre-book the smaller of the two grades of cabins and it was just fine. Luxury it ain't, but its a cabin after all. It was spotless, nicely appointed, a good size and comfy queen sized bed (with the addition of a single bed in the room too). Cabins one to four are the larger cabins facing the road, the others are numbered 5 and upwards. Ours was No 9 and it afforded us an excellent view of the distant mountains, and with an ample splash of mosi lotion, the cabin's veranda was an ideal location to catch the late afternoon sunshine.

The Sheep Mountain Lodge can be found between Mile Markers 112 and 113 on the Glenn Highway. The lodge also provides a very good restaurant (no meals are provided with the cost of the cabins) and the only other decent restaurant in the vicinity is the Long Rifle Lodge, a few miles towards Palmer. The menu is surprisingly good given the the relative remote location of the lodge, and the chef works wonders with the ingrediants, especially with the homemake pies. Breakfasts are very good indeed and set you up for the day at a very reasonable cost.

One of the reason for our Alaskan adventure from the UK was to see, and enjoy, the wildlife (excluding the mosi's!) and to get a real taste of rural Alaska. On both counts this location did not disappiont. We had wanted to see the Dall sheep and we did, in force, as they grazed precariously on the mountain directly behind the lodge. The lodge also boasts some short trails, that do provide some exercise, but to be honest are a tad on the dull side and not very well marked.

The lodge is also well positioned to enjoy the nearby Matanuska Glacier, but direct access to the glacier is only posible via a private road and entry is at a cost of $20 per person which we thought a total rip off.

All in all a well run and managed lodge by a husband and wife team that appreciarte the needs of their guests. So very pleased this was our location of choice.

Room Tip: Do not select cabin No 7 if you wish to have a view, it hasn't one. Trees obscures the whole fro...

Stayed here one night in July 2014. Absolutely wonderful cabin - clean, modern, and very comfortable. Shared the bathroom which was very warm and clean.

The mountain scenery from the cabin is absolutely amazing.

We arrived late at night, and left early for ice climbing. Wish we could have spent more time here as it was so peaceful and beautiful.

We have stayed here over the years and Zach Steer and his wife have done an amazing turnaround on the place both physically and culturally. They provide very nice cabins and a more affordable bunkhouse option with shared bath that has come light years from the early days when we first stayed there 14 or so years ago on our anniversary. The restaurant is truly excellent, with many great options, and save room for pie for dessert. We had an issue with a server one night but Zack more than corrected the issue on a very busy night. Truly a first class individual. Worth the drive just for the food, but stay the night and hike a bit or just plan for a stop on the way to points farther east. There is nothing comparable until you get to Kennecott.

Room Tip: Bunkhouse rooms are a bit more affordable with a short walk to shared bath. (Hot tub needs to be sch...

Had a nice lunch after visiting the nearby Matanuska Glacier. Restaurant was warm and inviting and staff was extremely friendly. Food was also very good including the chili, reindeer sausage, soup and burrito. Would definitely recommend if you're in the area or even just passing through!

We are glad you enjoyed our food. We keep the freshest ingredients on hand and our soups and chili are made from scratch; we hope that restaurant guests can taste the difference. Enjoy the rest of Alaska!
