“Fab Place. Fab People. Fab Visitor Attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2014

Having been to this Maritime Centre last week and experiencing very Friendly Staff and volunteers I wonder why people had cause for complaint like one or two of the contributors to this forum. So I will tell it as I found it. Service as good as you would expect from a medium priced cafe. Staff pleasant and willing. Food tasty and good coffee. Exhibition Brilliant. Volunteers a wealth of knowledge, lady on desk did know answer so she got the "font of knowledge" out of the office and he spent 30 minutes telling us about the centre and it's activities together with valuable Newbiggin facts. Newbiggin is lucky to have such a dedicated bunch running this place. Finally he gave us copies of the Arts Trail map and sent us on a lovely walk around the village. He even suggested other places for coffee on the way. Nice friendly people, real honest people, these guys deserve to succeed and I will be singing its praises to my circle of friends. We will be back. If your a walker looking for a nice day out without the hills Newbiggin is for you. Start at the Maritime Centre. Rob Knoxan. Weekly Walkers Club

“A little gem in Newbiggin”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2014 via mobile

The Maritime centre is a little gem right on the beach between the old historic church and the sea. Interesting history of the place and its people. Good place to visit for an hour or so. Clean and modern with interesting displays. The children could dress up as lifeboat crew which they loved. Nice cafe with good views over the beach. Will visit again.

“As helpful as a wafer lifeboat”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2014

The customer service in this place is terrible. On approaching the museum's front desk to ask a question, I was met with irritation by two people who clearly felt that their own conversation was more urgent than doing their actual job. Stony-faced, monosyllabic responses, no suggestions as to where I could find what I wanted, and not even a hint of a smile. I was excited to visit because my great-grandmother, Margaret Brown, is mentioned in the display, but I will NOT be going back, and I certainly won't be recommending this place to visitors of the area.

“Great for kids and fascinating history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2014

Took three children two teens and whilst having lunch and a walk about we went to the museum. It was really interactive and interesting telling the story of all around the area and the fishing families in the town. There is also dressing up. Well worth the money!

“Museum is really engaging, cafe less so”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2014

The museum is outstanding in our view. The quality of the interpretation of the 3 aspects of Newbiggin - the fishing, the village and the lifeboat, is very high indeed. Not too cluttered, and clearly explained in the exhibits and information panels. The two films on loops are captivating - the 1941 propaganda film is a gem, and the emotions evoked by the fine film under the lifeboat stay with you for ages afterward. Very tasteful film, aesthetic and moving. Well worth a visit, although the architecture and location clashes somewhat with the old solitary profile of the church. The lady at the desk was realy informative about the museum layout.

Cafe staff were friendly and helpful, but the menu and food quality was a let down after the excellence of the museum.
