stayed for three nights on b&b.we ate at the hotel on all three nights, once in the restaurant and twice in the bar.the food in the restaurant was good and fairly priced at 19.50 for three courses.in the bar if you ate between 4pm-7pm you had two courses for £10 including half a bottle of wine but that was a spring special up until 20th may.the bedroom with a shower was comfortable and clean and the hotel was clean all through.they do have a leisure centre but we did not have time to use it.the hotel is situated well for visits to beamish outdoor museum, durham and the metro centre. It is owned by oxford hotels and inns. All the management and staff were very good

We spent a long weekend at the Derwent Manor while visiting friends and family in the area. It was fine as a base: clean, pleasant and comfortable. They had considerately placed us in a room as far away as possible from the functions areas so it was quiet as well. So no complaints as such, but I hope some constructive criticism.

First, the costs. Because our stay included a Saturday night, when the hotel seems to be full all the time because of weddings etc, this more than doubled the cost. Friday night was £50, Sunday night was £30 and Saturday night was a whopping £120. Moral: avoid Saturday night if possible (there is a charming B&B about 500 yards away and it may just be worth upping sticks and moving in there for a Saturday night, saving approx £90).

Breakfast was excellent - for once in a hotel there were freshly-cooked fried eggs rather than the congealed messes on a buffet. But the toast was obviously pre-cooked and even a request for well-done toast (which I thought might get it perked up a bit by further application to a toaster) failed; they clearly cook all the toast at 7.00 am and grade it then.

We didn't try the Restaurant but the Grouse and Claret bar (which offers neither grouse nor claret) was reasonable and cheerful (although the 'fresh cream of vegetable soup' was a squodge of yesterday's over-salty mushy peas and little else, and therefore uneatable). BUT (and a big but for a beer-loving ex-pat) there was no real ale. If you are seeking to recreate an old-fashioned British country pub atmosphere then the beer is an essential ingredient.

My wife (a nurse) was rather surprised by the heat of the water in the hot tap. I was quite happy but in these elf'n'safety days some idiot is going to burn their feet when getting into the bath and walk away - if still capable of walking - with lots of compensation. She also tut-tutted about the clean sheets and towels being placed on the floor outside the rooms while the beds were made up.

These are minor matters - we got what we paid for. But the place is geared to functions and the 'private' guests are something of an afterthought although well looked after.

This was our second stay at The Derwent Manor. 12 of us stayed for one night to celerbrate our xmas party.Everything was well organised most of us had a nice swim before the party and the entertainment was fab; "Spice Unite". We think we get good value for money at this hotel but I do think that at busy times there should be more bar staff employed my husband waited 15 minutes before anyone appeared behind the bar to serve him and the person did'nt say sorry for your wait! We had to wait for the breakfast to be filled up but it was nice.
We have booked again to go back this year I wonder if it snow's again which made a nice seasonal touch.

We stayed 1 night on 7.02.09 and would comment that all the staff were very friendly and welcoming .The room was well proportioned ,a little bit worn but very clean .The room decor was 1990s with mock beams on the ceiling and the bath had built in jacuzzi which did not work .A convector heater was supplied to supplement the existing system which under the circumstances was required .It was -4 outside on the night we stayed and hotel is quite exposed on a hill and our room had very good views of the country side.
We chose to have the dinner and can say it was average but the service was efficient and timely .
The breakfast was very good with an excellent selection of fruits and the full English was freshly made which compensated for the slight delay after placing the order .For the package we had of just over £40 b.b it was good value for money and this was our 2nd stay at an Oxford Hotels and Inns special offer .
Travelling to the hotel from the main road was precarious with sheet ice across a very steep bank and feel management should have placed salt on their private section to prevent cars sliding on to the very busy A68 .
All in all an enjoyable stay .

My partner and I stayed one night in the Derwent Manor hotel. On arrival we were met with friendly staff, we were given a spacious room with a pleasant view. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful and went out of their way to help us if we needed anything. The hotel has a cosy bar with a log fire and a log fire in the dining room upstairs. It was a freezing cold night but the hotel was warm and comfortable with Christmas tree decorations and lights which gave a warm feel to the place. We ate in the restruarant, not cordon bleu but good wholesome food and plenty of it, came piping hot and service was efficient in the restruarant. Brekfast was equally as good served piping hot, with a good choice of fruit also. The health club was also enjoyable, the jacuzzi nice and warm and a decent pool for a swim. Overall we felt we had very good value for money.

Wedding - where to start, a disdaster from the beginning. I was bridesmaid and I received a message stating that my room for the night of the wedding had been overbooked, so could not stay.
Upon arrival the hotel looked lovely, that was until we got inside. My room did not lock nor did the curtains close fully. My room was next to a wedding disco that continued until 1 am - the noise was horrific. Our pre-ordered champagne did not arrive, so we had to collect from the bar after queuing for 30 minutes. the bar was staffed by 3 people only and the queue was 6 deep. Tables were dirty and the food cold. I had to ask for cutlery twice and my soup was returned on 3 occasions cold. They then had the nerve to give us the bill without us asking, prior to the food arriving.
We asked for a room change due to the noise which we eventually got and then discovered that, in fact, I did have room for another night and it had been an oversight on their behalf. Service from duty manager was very ppor and slow. The restaurant ran out of food at breakfast.
Rooms in desperate need of a refurb. Bath would not hold water.

What a shame.

It is very disappointing to read that we did not met your expectations at Derwent Manor. I have discussed your observations with our departmental heads to ensure the necessary corrective action will be taken to ensure there is no re–occurrence of your experiences which are far from our normal standard. Further to your other points, our maintenance team have thoroughly checked the locks on your rooms and were unable to find any problems, nor were they able to ascertain why the bath would not hold water whilst you were staying.

As I am sure you are aware, wedding discos can on occasion be somewhat boisterous and lively celebratory affairs, and on the occasion of the night before the reception you attended it is unfortunate that you were disturbed, however I am pleased to note that we were able to accommodate you in a different room. I have noted that we did not overbook during your stay, and having investigated I am at a loss to explain why you were informed we were overbooked, or by whom.

Might as well start at the beginning. The hotel driveway is picturesque and the frontage of the hotel looked very nice.
We were, however, filled with dread when we noticed that there was a large wedding reception taking place.

Reception looks impressive with a suit of armour and big leather chairs. The receptionist was friendly and efficient and checked us in quickly.
Our room had twin double beds and was clean and spacious. The decor was fine and the beamed ceilings looked nice. The bathroom was a decent size with complimentary body wash and shampoo. The curtains were thick and shut out the light well. There's tea/coffee/bisuits but as with most hotels there's never enough. There was also an iron and iron board provided. The room was pleasantly warm and an extra heater was provided if required. We found the bed's comfortable but maybe could of done with a couple of extra pillows. As with most of the places we've stayed at, the walls could do with being a bit thicker as you can hear your neighbours.

The bar area is large and full of character with a wooden beamed ceiling. There's a quiz machine, pool table and tv in one area that's separate from the main bar area. One of the negatives about our stay was the drink prices. We paid over £10 for a large wine and a large spirit. We only had bar snacks and they were delivered quickly and tasted fine. We didn't eat in the main restaurant so we can't comment on that.

We needn't have worried about the wedding reception as we couldn't hear any noise once we got back to our room.

We used the swimming pool which was warm and clean but we felt anymore than about eight people and it would start to feel a bit crowded.

Breakfast was excellent although someone needs to teach the chef how to do a decent fried slice.

Checkout was quick and accurate and the receptionist was
friendly.

Overall we thought this was a really nice hotel for the £70 we paid. It has lots of character and we would definitely go back. Our negatives were the drink prices and the fact that the breakfast staff needed to be more enthusiastic and smile.
