We were treated by our children for our Silver Wedding anniversary. It was a Deal Monster offer of a 2 nights stay with a 3 course meal, a breakfast and £4.50 off a bottle of wine. I honestly cant think of a bad word to say about this hotel, the room was clean and spacious. The bed was extreemly comfy. The 3 course meal was delicious as was the breakfast. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would definately stay there again, hopefully in the not too distant future. Thank you to all concerned for a lovely stay.

Hotel used as base from which to explore Durham area.
Long and busy days meant that we did not make use of hotel bar, pool etc.
Well presented generally with polite, cheerful and helpful staff.
Room large clean and comfortable with well lit and spacious bathroom.
Breakfast options plentiful and well cooked.
Elderly, floor stand mounted analogue tele was only minor moan - a bit difficult to view from the comfort of bed!

We stayed for 3 nights in a family room. The room was quite dated and had 2 double beds. This meant our 3 year old girl had to share a bed with her 6 year old brother. Getting them to sleep in the same bed was a nightmare! The beds were also very high so if they had fallen out they could have really hurt themselves.
The staff on arrival were very friendly as were the staff at breakfast. I did ask a staff member about the DVDs they have for children to watch but was informed I would have needed to bring my own DVD player! The TV in the room was ancient but did have CBeebies...

We had decided that we were going to treat ourselves every evening and eat in the hotel. However, after the first night we decided it was best to eat elsewhere. The pies were not good quality, the mash was cold and the vegetables uncooked! The children's meals were even worse. One of the options was cheesy chips - as we were on holiday I allowed my son to have this and it consisted of 13 chips (yes, he counted them!) covered in very poor quality cheese and microwaved. My daughter's pasta was not much better. This was all very disappointing.

On the plus side the swimming pool was lovely and our children enjoyed spending time in there.

The hotel is in a great location and has a lot of potential. I would happily stay there as an overnight to break up a long journey but would not stay there for any longer.

We stayed here for a 'relaxing weekend break' last week. There were wedding parties on both nights. The first night wasn't too bad noise wise but the saturday night was horrific. Banging music till early hours.Doors banging throughout the early morning. We were apparently one of the furthest rooms away from the function room. The hotel has a policy of not informing guests of any wedding party bookings and looks great for a wedding event. Unfortunately this isn't great for other guests looking for a relaxing stay. I was informed by staff these events can also be during the week and obviously these are big wedding parties with hundreds of guests. The feeling I got was catering for large weddings must be far more important to other individual guests as the hotel don't seem to care about others not being able to sleep. A relaxing break it was not and they won't tell you if a wedding is on either which I feel is unfair. Its a shame as we quite liked the place although the bar is very expensive even more so than city centre bars. The management don't empathise with you when you mention noise and don't seem interested. Shame as we liked the food in the restaurant but the breakfasts were very average. Our room wasn't very clean with hairs on our bed and dirty cups lying on the table. The road up to the place is terrible. If the hotel bothered to listen to people passing on the same comments maybe it would help but the don't care!! Will visit the area again but not at this hotel unfortunately.

Room Tip: Ask for a room furthest away from wedding function and bring your earplugs

We booked a Fri/Sat night deal here, and would have left on Sat morning if we hadn't already paid for the 2 night voucher. The wedding disco might as well have been in our room, it was so loud. we were in bec at 11 but it went on till 1a.m. Getting ever louder. Night receptionist was rude when we called down about it, saying 'well, there's nothing I can do about it'. Then I couldn't sleep till after 4am I was so over-tired.

This is a pity as all the other staff were lovely, we really enjoyed the dinner and breakfast, and our room was clean and comfortable.

Stayed here for a wedding venue.
The pro's - staff were excellent. Very friendly and getting to know clients as individuals in a warm, hospitable manner. Helped the whole event run smoothly.
- Function room and bar were lovely. Very spacious with distinctive decor, loved the historical flare with light contemporary touches.
- lovely country setting, great views across the valley and very spacious throughout the hotel including all rooms and communal areas.

Food was served very quickly although it was of average quality at best. Nice breakfast and lots of choice, but again it was the staff effort that made it worthwhile. Heard a few comments from guests that food from the menu was not particularly pleasant and overpriced.

The con's - hotel room was a big let down. Rooms although very spacious, were very dated. Bed very squeaky and terrible dip in the middle. Pillows were very thin. Towels were frayed. Ancient hairdryer and TV. Furniture looking very tired and worn.
My room had been used the previous evening by friends, however I specifically requested sheets be changed as new guests were staying. This was not done. I also had no kettle or tea/ coffee facilities.

To summarise, dated rooms, average food quality, fantastic staff, beautiful building and surroundings but very expensive.
Would very happily attend another function here but would rather get a bus home than reside in a room.

Thanks for your mixed bag of comments mostly positive, no kettle and bed changes inbetween stays sounds odd but will be looked into.
