We stay at the Derwent Manor very often, it is our little escape from the norm. Staff are lovely, food is delicious and rooms are very comfortable and clean, and the spa and gym are just an added bonus to the beautiful surrounings. However I do have one major complaint that I do mention on each visit as simple as it is it NEVER gets rectified. The floor in the sauna underneath the seats NEVER gets washed. It is absolutely filthy. Iv dropped my locker key a couple of times and when iv picked it up my hand has been filthy. Its such a simple task.Staff must wash the front of the sauna but cant be bothered to bend down to clean the back where everyone's sweat drops !!! Please sort this housekeeping issue it is a health and safety issue, so disgusting and its just lazy staff. This is an on going unnecessary problem that could be sorted with a hot soapy mop in minutes. Showers in the rooms would bever be left so why is half of the floor in the sauna !!! Rant over !!! We still love our visits back very soon

This is a lovely hotel.
The building is lovely and decor in the public areas is interesting and welcoming. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the service is great. The room was spacious and the bed really comfortable. The food was fantastic and breakfast was brilliant.
The pool area was good but the pool a bit cool and the changing area a bit too small and tired.
Overall a really good stay!

The service at the Derwent Manor was great, everyone could not have been more helpful. Rooms are fine, if a little dated and due to the nature of the building you are perpetually going up and down four or five steps. So be aware if you have mobility issues.
Food in the restaurant was good, but unfortunately we ate in the bar on our first night. We chose fish and chips, it was about the most expensive thing on the menu and it was particularly disappointing, very small, fish slightly soggy and chips not really cooked.
Unfortunately, the was a party in the hotel the Saturday evening and although the party did not affect us, the idiot attending it (students from Durham University, so presumably quite bright!!) who set the fire alarm of at 1am certainly did. Staff dealt with us well and got us back to bed quickly.

Spent three nights (four days) exploring Hadrian's Wall (It was closed!!) and part of the Pennine, including Derwent Water, Blanchlands and Allendale. We stayed at Derwent Manor Hotel. Our room was spacious (two double beds) and warm. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful and we were impressed by them. The food at Dinner was tasty and well presented with a reasonable choice. The wine list was good and affordable. The Guinevere Restauarant was a welcoming sight with a big log fire (albeit a gas one) making the room look cosy. Candles around the windows added to the ambience as well as some of the bits and pieces around the place. We enjoyed using the leisure suite, swimming, using the jacuzzi and the sauna. Overall we felt our break was great value for money and we recommended to friends we visited on the way home. they have not booked a break there. Keep up the good work.

We stayed in Sycamore Cottage over the Christmas week. There was myself, my husband and 2 children and my parents. The bedrooms were a good size and my parents were upstairs so they felt out of the way and had some privacy. The staff had provided a christmas tree (despite a phone call where a very unhepful receptionist had told me there wouldn't be so I'd taken my own).
The cottage is situated in the grounds of a hotel. The parking is a nightmare. Often we could park nowhere near the cottage and one one occasion a car had parked so close to the foot of the steps we could barely get in or out. On christmas day there was a car alarm (again directly outside our door) going off all day and night. Staff weren't particularly helpful or bothered despite our 3 trips to reception. A designated parking space outside the cottage would be helpful.
When we got there, the heating in both the lounge and the kitchen failed to work. This was reported but again staff were neither bothered or got it fixed. There was a panel heater in the lounge but this needed turning on so when we got up in the morning it was absolutely freezing until it warmed up.
The lounge is on the small side and cramped with chairs and a table. not suitable for 6 people. There are actually only a 2 seater sofa and 2 armchairs so the kids were always on the floor.
There is nowhere to actually put rubbish other than an open bin shared by all the cottages. This was usually overflowing and there is nowhere for recycling.
The "cottage" (more extended, dated hotel room) is in desperate need of updating and feels like an add on to the hotel with noone taking particular responsibility for it.
There was no information book so we had no clue how to work the heating or the cooker.
We chose to have christmas dinner in the hotel. this was nothing short of dreadful. The food was appaling, dumped on plates with no finesse. The waits were horrendous. we were in there nearly 3 hours and most of that was sitting around. There were people coming in after us who were getting served long before us. The staff had no clue what was going on and there were far too many people squashed into the hall. Probably the worst christmas dinner experience I have ever had.
We will not be visiting again.

Sorry to read your comments, but the cottages are sold as old world and not modern, touches like the Christmas tree are always put in, parking spaces to the number200 are provided but not directly outside, car alarms some times do go of and are dealt eith asap. A bin are is provided near the cottages it is small dut removed daily to the main bin area so clients are not put out.

Christmas day was busy and overall went well sorry you thought it was not, however in the middle of March hard to comment. Thank you for your comments.

This is our fourth visit to the hotel and our best yet. My husband, four year old daughter and myself spent the night using a Groupon voucher and found everything to be good value for money and thoroughly enjoyable. Our room was ready on arrival. We booked a twin room which provided two double beds, giving us ample space for the three of us. The room was clean, warm and comfortable with excellent views. We used the leisure facilities both upon arrival and before checking out the following morning. Although they are quite small, it was fairly quiet on the Friday afternoon and we had them to ourselves on the Saturday morning after breakfast. After a drink in the bar we went to the restaurant for our evening meal and it was excellent. The food was beautifully presented, well cooked and delicious. There was a good choice for both ourselves and my daughter. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. They took time to listen to my little girl and bring her what she wanted and when I had to leave the table to take her to the toilet just after my main meal arrived, the waiting staff took my plate away to keep warm. When I returned, I was surprised to be given a new meal as opposed to the one I had begun eating from but thought this was very good service. We experienced the same attentive service the following morning at breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed the wide and varied selection of both cooked and continental options available. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Solid Best Western that is big on food quality and service, and has a vista to die for.

Have stayed here three time with work - the last time in December.

We have switched to here from the Beamish Hall (another great Best Western) as the restaurant is better for entertaining customers.

As others have said the hotel has a lot of functions but its so big and rambling that you never really notice. Lots of function rooms and a big bar area mean people can space out.

Have somehow managed to stay in the same room each time (the one that is almost exactly at the end of the corridor running off to the left of reception) which means in the morning you get a view out over the beautiful scenery.

Yes the decor could do with a bit of a freshen up (especially the bathrooms) but they are clean and warm and the staff make you feel welcome.

Free WiFi is also a nice bonus.

Inexpensive and somewhere I would use for pleasure if in the area. Recommended.
