“food awful”
Reviewed March 16, 2012

had a two day dinner b and b break mid week, nice hotel, rooms were rather dated but comfortable beds, pool area was good, however the evening meal was a big let down, having stayed in other best westerns we were very disappointed with the bland and tasteless food. the service was poor we didnt even get offered a drink. we did complain to the restaurant manageress who we felt couldn't care less.
On the second evening we ate in the bar hoping for better, but the food was no better and overpriced, also the barmaids were not dressed appropriately all showing large bare expanses of belly which was not professional and offensive.
we would not stay in a 3 star best western again as have always stayed in 4 stars in the past and the difference is enormous.

Thanks for the comments on service and staff, will try to improve, but as comments are not very constructive difficult to know what the issue was with service and food , will advise staff to cover up more.

Stayed here this week 13/03. Not too impressed. Checked in and was told i was staying in the cottages and pointed in the direction. Couldn't find the room and had to walk back to reception for further directions. The room was tiny and the decor needs updating. The shower did not get hot and when it did it turned to a dribble. Had a meal and drink in the main bar at the evening and the barman could do with some lessons in customer service. He came to life later on when his friends came to visit him. The meal wouldn't have filled a two year olds appetite.

Found a sock under the bed and ash was in the shower.

The surroundings were excellent and very picturesque. I do a lot of travelling with work and choose Best Western first because they have a good points saving card and secondly because they are usual excellent hotels ( I actually had my Wedding reception at the one in Whalley). Not one for complaining usually but i'm hoping if the staff read this it may improve things. Ive just booked to stay at the Mezies Strathmore in Luton soon so will see how things go there before deciding to use a different chain.

I feel like I should write this review in fairness of the hotel,I cannot believe what some people actually moan about, come on...the road surface??? Omg yes there is a few pot holes and a speed bump but let's face it isint that the way roads are in the UK these days, getting back to the hotel, check in states 3.0 clock, however we arrived at 2 and they said our room was ready early so was pleased about that.
Yes rooms are old but that's just the tradition of the hotel, rooms were spotless, hotel grounds lovely, bar and restaurant gorgeous,3 courseeal was perfect,we had the stake at an supplement of £4.95 which I thought was reasonable,I also has the prawns and cucumber starter which was also faultless.
All staff was ever so friendly,I will definitely be returning to this hotel very soon...for £ 68 you cannot be robbed, also spa was nice, even had it to ourselves at one point,oh and the breakfast was cooked to order but you help yourselves to ceral and toast, was a very fast efficient service,a massive well done to all the staff at derwent manor for our lovely stay, don't let the negitive reviews put you off,we have stayed in a lot of hotels all over the uk and this was just as good as the rest of them.

A great, honest review. We're glad to see that you enjoyed your stay with us.
The road upto the hotel is a private road and we do try our best to keep it tidy.

my boyfriend and i recently stayed overnight at derwent manor hotel and had a lovely time. The room was excellent and the staff pleasant and friendly. I was particularly impressed at one member of staff who after i dropped ten pounds on the floor in the restaurant promptly it up and returned it to myself. Such honesty is rare these days!!! The hotel was cosy and warm and my boyfriend and i shall definitely be returning there for future stays

A great location, very nice sports facilities, old fashioned rooms, evening food served is poor, breakfast ok-ish, mirrors and shower head is set on my chest (6'2" tall), lovely woodland setting, poorly surfaced drive, staff had very long faces. It has massive potential and is good, but not quite very good. Not planning a return anytime soon.

My husband and I booked this as a late Christmas present to ourselves as we'd had a really hectic end to the year and an even busier Christmas with relatives staying from abroad. It was just what we needed and everything we had hoped it would be. The hotel is set in beautiful countryside and is an impressive sight on your approach. The reception area and staff are extremely welcoming and very helpful.

Our room was very pleasant. Having a large picture window with lovely views over to Castleside and the viaduct beyond - you could be forgiven for believing you were miles from anywhere. The evening meals were superb, with a wide choice option in all three courses. We were amazed that the bottle of wine was also quite palatable, allowing for the fact that we were staying on the 68.12 offer.

We enjoyed some lovely walks from the hotel and time relaxing afterwards in the spa (where we met and talked to the manager), enjoying a sauna, swim and hot tub, again with fabulous views of the sunset, or having an afternoon drink in the bar, which was like a country pub.

Overall, we would highly recommend a stay to anyone who would enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside in such beautiful surroundings. Everyone we met (from the Hotel Manager to the bar staff) were extremely friendly and helpful. We met some lovely guests who were also on short breaks who had stayed in the hotel before and they commented on how much improved it was since their last stay.

In summary, a refreshing short break at a price that doesn't break the bank.

Thank you Derwent Manor
