We've met up with the same friends at the Boat Inn before (usually in the restaurant upstairs) and its always been friendly, busy and the food has been good. The bar and bistro were all but empty when we arrived so no-one was rushed off their feet but no-one rushed to look after us either - with the exception of one lady, bar staff seemed either distracted by chatting or bored.

Anyway, we were with friends, had a table booked in the Bistro and it was by the window, the radiator was lovely and warm and we could see the water, perfect!

We waited for half an hour to be served, then went to find someone to be told we had to order at the bar. We don't mind that but it would have been helpful if someone had welcomed us and told us the routine, showed us through to our table, checked we had cutlery and menus - we had to go in search of all of these ourselves. The three roast beef dinners we had were served with nice vegetables but the meat was very poor, the vegetarian nut roast was really bad. To be fair, we were asked if we had enjoyed our meals and we said that we had.

Overall really dissapointing - such a pity because the setting is so ideal.

We have used this venue before to meet up with friends as the location is about halfway between us. As usual lovely and picturesque location with plenty of parking. However this visit very disappointing - felt like the C team had taken over to give the A and B teams a break after the Christmas and New Year festivities. Food average and service poor. Felt like the staff could not really be bothered. Will now be looking for alternative places to meet up.

Like the previous reviewer, we also meet here are is it roughly halfway between us and my parents' home. This is the second Xmas meal we have had, and we have also been here in the summer. We always eat in Woodwards - which is on the first floor. We have always had tables facing the river, so gives a nice view. The food is right for the price. The service can be a little amatuer - usually young girls, so inexperienced and lacking sophistication. The highlight is usually the veg that comes with the main course. It is different from the run of the mill fare - red cabbage with apple, for example. Downstairs is a bit "rough and ready" and would not recommend eating in the bar. If you're looking for something traditonal and somewhat old fashioned, you will probably like it. My Xmas meal was melon, turkey and trifle - all acceptable for the premium price of £25 per head on 23rd Dec.

Chose this pub to eat at as it was exactly halfway for us to meet up with the kids for lunch, about 70 miles each way for us. The location is nice, on the canal lock, very picturesque. The staff were fine, very helpful and friendly and a good selection of beers on tap. We chose to eat in the bistro rather tan the restaurant. Think cafeteria. The food selection looked good and is priced at normal pub grub rates. Not up to most pub grub standards though unfortunately. We chose a variety of meals, there was five of us. One out of he five had a good meal which was the steak and ale pie. The roast beef dinner was almost in edible ad the seafood platters the rest of us ordered was not great and tasted like the oil it had been deep fried in had seen better days. Shame really to let themselves down with the food when everything else was ok.

We dropped in for a quick meal one Friday evening. We chose the lounge bar which was cold and univiting. There was no welcome from the staff who were more concerned with chatting to the 20/30 somethings who were propping up the bar - the language left a great deal to be desired.

The landlord did stick his head round the corner at one stage to ask if we were being served but was obviously more concerned with the 'clique' in the public bar.

The food was virtiually inedible - greasy and tepid. We left the place and the food.
