Originally we were planning to go to Sapa, but the nine hour train ride did not fit into our limited time in Vietnam. Our hotel in Hanoi suggested a trip to Mai Chau as an alternative. We splurged for a private tour (not that much more expensive) since Mai Chau seemed too difficult to navigate solo and we aren't too keen on traveling with large groups. Our guide, Trung, was a perfect match for us. He was knowledgeable about the area and gave us a lot of flexibility with our schedule and activities. We filled our three days with biking, riding scooters, and trekking. The riverside bungalows have a lovely view of the mountains and rice paddies. The food was fairly bland for our taste, but they accommodated us with always serving a side of chili sauce.

A beautiful place in the countryside and a nice break from Hanoi. The scenery and surroundings can't be beat. The food offerings were good with a nice variety offered for each lunch and dinner. The rooms were rustic, but comfortable. No WIFI is provided, but you don't really need it as there are plenty of places for walking and trekking. There were local ethnic dance performances on some evenings. It does go by two names--Nature Place and Mai Chau Riverside Resort, which initially caused us some confusion. I would not hesitate to return for the beautiful environment.

After 2 weels in country thos was our highlight. Two packed days walking, riding and experiencing this firendly area. We wlaked thorugh the fileds, and cycled the roads until we fell. All the home stays are great it seems. What stood out: our kids playing football with the local kids into the evening and asking our hosts to arrange local dancers and musicians to put on a show to remember. MAke visitn gthis rural imple area a must and get our of the normal tourist rut.

This place is as you would expect, out of the way. The bungalows ( 8) were in very good condition, and the communual room , We stayed in the communual room,
The situation of this place was fantastic, the views were fantastic, and the food was very good.
We were given lunch just after we arrived , the drinks you have a sheet and put down what you have, then pay just as you are about to leave.( our drinks = three bottles of beer, four cans of coke, and a large bottle of water came to $5.
We did a guided cycle tour, around the area , which wasnt hilly at all, on these old ,rickety bikes, to be honest they could do with a service.
We were given in the evening , local tribe dances by local girls, this was very good, as they wore traditional dress.
The next day we did the so called 1000 step walk up to the caves, very hard work,WARNING. if your not fit, or are of an ill health nature, dont do it. you need to be a billy got, and some of the steps need replacing, they go up at a very steep rate, from start to finish, but the views are really beautiful from the top. We counted them on the way down, and there were 1228 steps, lol
As I stated earlier, we slept in the communal room,,,,,,, we did not really get a good nights sleep. the water tower was next to it, so every time some one went ot the loo, or had a shower, the water pump in the tower made a loud noise,
But apart from that the views/area are really stunning, the food was very good, and there is lots to see and do.

Room Tip: pay the extra couple of dollars, try not to get rhe communial room if you want a good nights sleep.

We spent two nights at this place and wished we could spend another night here!

We booked online requesting for a garden view but once we got that, we asked to upgrade to a river view- we love a balcony facing the river at the back (or front) of the Nature place. It was a simple bamboo hut with a mossy net over the bed but it has all facilities we needed. It was early March, so it was perfect weather- cool at night. A balcony facing a river was very private and we spent a lot of time having a beer and looking out a rice paddle field- very serene and peaceful.

All staff were super friendly, and helpful. People seem to be content where they are and so comfortable with new guests coming and going. The father, who often we saw made a broom, seems very relax and get on with his daily routine, while the mother, who welcomes us, was getting everything organised for guests. Despite a language barrier, everything was going smoothly and enjoyable.

We had meals with the place everyday, and couldnt have enough of them, especially spring rolls! It was one of the best we ever had- freshly made daily. we also love the honesty system of getting drink- that each time you get a drink, you have to mark down on the sheet of paper with your name on. Before your departure, they then add them up- so trusting- love it!

The location is great- just close to the White Thai village where we did some gift shopping, and away from the main road. We also enjoyed a free bicycle around Mai Chau daily.

Few downside: Mossy! It comes from everywhere at night time- so ensure you let your mossy net down early in the evening!
Also they, the whole village, seems to have no concept of noise disturbance as each night a loud music would come from one house or another- with a very bad sound system! The second night, we listened to "Gung Num Style' about a hundred time! We even joked that must be a folksong of this village!

Overall, highly recommend if you look for a quiet place, back to nature and simplicity- no kettle tour guide telling you what to do here!

Room Tip: Pay extra to stay in the room with river view- you get a balcony facing the river- that is more priv...
