“great idea, but no idea”
Reviewed February 26, 2012

me and partner like to try different eating experiences, so when we saw the tapas in olney instead of curry chinese or pizza we was delighted but, on arrival we was told there was a table available in 20 min so we decided to have a drink at the bar which was very pleasant and after 20 min the lady owner came over and informed us that the table had been given to someone else but not to worry we could eat our food in the busy bar area which would have been fine but to be the only people sat there eating in that area just felt wrong. normally we feel we are very laid back but there was no explanation as to why nor an apology so this time decided to give it a miss.

we returned a few weeks later and after having booked a table we was delighted to get seated. However we found the food was expensive for the portion sizes and maybe these portions are better served in a busy bar the way traditonal tapas is(were everyone is eating not just on your own). The food itself was really nice and couldnt complain about that but we feel this resaurant doesnt quite know what it wants to be a traditional tapas bar thats small and inexpensive so you can try bits of everything or a traditional restaurant with a slight tapas twist. On the whole small portions high price which doesnt really work for the majority of people

“I really want to like this place”
Reviewed February 15, 2012

I have visited this restaurant twice now with my husband and I have to say that he likes it more than I do. I find that for the money the food and wine is purely average and the portions very meagre - yes I know its tapas but when the cheaper dishes such as the potaotes and vegetables barely cover the bottom of the dish this is unacceptable.
Now for the good part I really like the restaurant itself we have always found the owners to be very friendly and helpful although we do laugh that every time we arrive we have been told that we are lucky to have got the last table, especially when we heard the same thing said to other families who followed us in. However I do think this restaurant could be great with just a little thought about the quantity or cost of the dishes and it is really nice to see something different in Olney.

“Great flavours, great venue.”
Reviewed January 4, 2012

I went with family and friends (four adults, four children) to Tapas i Pintxos for a late lunch on New Year's Eve to try out this new restaurant. It was easy to park immediately outside. The first floor restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere with an attractive fit out and the building has loads of character. I was a bit worried after seeing some of the earlier trip advisor reviews that we would be charged unexpectedly high unannounced costs, and had to fight the urge to ask how much the starting bread and olives cost when they were offered. I needn't have worried. All the prices were clearly set out on the menu and seemed reasonable. Our bill came to about £10 a head including drinks. The mixed tapas was delicious with exciting flavours - particularly the chickpeas with spinach, cayenne cream and paprika and the hot chorizo. The staff were patient in explaining what all the flavours were. The children really liked their chicken wings and hot potatoes, and got to try some of the other things too. One of our party did say that it was a fairly English way of serving the tapas, in that we ordered it all item by item from the menu at the start (with a few top ups along the way) rather than the waiters bringing out random dishes for us to try, but maybe they serve in a more relaxed way in the evenings. We shall have to find out...

“A great addition to Olney”
Reviewed December 11, 2011

I went with friends Sat 10th Dec. We all met in the new cocktail lounge 'El Centro', a very modern bar serving great cocktails. We opened a tab which was added to our food bill later, a lovely touch which meant just splitting the bill at the end. The restaurant itself is situated upstairs, it was packed out (in fact we heard staff turning bookings away as they were full). It had a live, vibrant atmosphere and we were all pleasantly surprised by how much charm the building had itself in contrast to the modern bar. As for the staff they could not have been more helpful, they explained the menu to us and the recommended amount of dishes per head. We were asked if we would like bread and olives to start whilst we studied the menu, as with tapas there is no real 'starter'. The food itself was fresh and tasty. The choice and variety on the menu was great and one member in our party had a gluten allergy, but there was plenty for even her to choose from. The menu allows you to effectively ‘build your own meal’ so you are in control of how much you are spending, it’s a real flexible way of eating. Over all we had a great night out, fantastic food, fab service and a jolly good time. We are really looking forward to our next visit, and would highly recommend the place to anyone looking for a great night out – it’s much more than just a restaurant.
