Bridge View House B&B
Ranked #1 of 1 Kilcrohane B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 9, 2013

If I do, you will just go there and then there won't be a free room for me and that would be an utter disaster ;-))

But, I'm in good mood so maybe I'll tell you just a little bit about my favourite accommodation on the Sheeps Head Pen.

So, in July I was anxious to see the four new rooms that BVH had added to their accommodation in the gorgeous village of Kilcrohane on the Sheeps head Peninsula.

I have stayed in the B&B a few times and always in the main house which has four guest bedrooms. This time I was honoured to stay in room 1 of their new accommodation block. There are four additional rooms there, just about 15 metres from the main house on their own property. A fifth room is to be added and this will have self catering option. Can't wait to see and hopefully use that.

Anyway the new rooms include 2 double rooms and 2 twin rooms. We had a double which overlooks the expansive garden and of course in the distance - Dunmanus Bay.

The rooms are very comfortable with a nice double bed, loads of wardrobe space, tea/coffee making facilities and a fine flat screen TV. The bathroom with large wheelchair accessible shower is spacious and the Donegans provide towels and toiletries. The walls have been stuffed so well with insulation to explosion point, which guarantees a lovely quiet and peaceful sleep

The Donegans still provide evening meals and of course their 'signature' breakfast. Yes the one fit for a King, the one that fills you up for the day and beyond, the one that is served to your table, none of your old 'fighting your way to the buffet table' at BVH, the one that is cooked to order. Yes, that one.

The other thing that the Donegans continue to maintain is their personal service and BIG BIG genuine Irish welcome. It's such a treat in these days of impersonal 'Holiday INNish' type customer service to really feel welcome and appreciated, and this is what Donegans do at BVH.

Location wise, Kilcrohane village is a wonderful location, it's more a hamlet than a village really and it only has a couple of shops, two pubs, a church and Bridgeview House, but what else would you need when your location is as beautiful as Sheeps Head Peninsula.
All of the aforementioned are but a 2 minute walk from BVH. Perfect.

Oh, and if you do decide to stay longer, they have a Primary School and not too far away an excellent playground.

I hope you enjoy your stay there as much as I did.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good. But one of the rooms is perfect for a family unit. It is a room with another...

My husband and I received a very warm welcome at the Bridge View House. We had underestimated how long it would take us to get there from Bantry Town Centre, but after a few phone conversations with the owner, her daughter very kindly picked us up and dropped us at the location! This was above and beyond what was expected; it was at least a 40-minute drive.

The rooms were simply decorated and comfortable, with a nice hot en-suite shower. The owner gave us a lot of information about Bantry during our one-night stay, as well as the village of Kilcrohane itself (which is tiny).

We arrived too late to experience the dinner, but breakfast the following morning was very tasty: scrambled eggs and smoked salmon; different kinds of jam, honey and toast; fresh tea. A Bantry resident friend of ours came to visit and was able to sit at the breakfast table with us, despite not having stayed at the guest house herself. We then had a lovely conversation with the owner (and later, her daughter) about local sites / events of interest, particularly the Bantry Literary Festival which takes place in July.

West Cork is a stunning area, with down-to-earth straightforward people. It was a refreshing break from my busy London lifestyle, and the internal politics that carries.

This b&b is right in the middle of the village. Unfortunately we were in the 'overflow house' which is not. It did mean a drive after the pub which is not ideal. Breakfast was good, though again a drive to the main b&b in the morning. House was nice, if a bit strange that we were sharing with a strange couple in what was essentially a house to be rented in the entirety. Hostess was kind and welcoming.

We stayed at Bridge View House for 3 nights from the 2nd March 2012. We arrived to a very warm welcome, and homemade scones with tea or coffee. The bedroom was simply furnished and spotlessly clean with an en-suite, coffee and tea tray, hairdryer, and a most comfortable bed. The view from the bedroom was across the village to the sea. Our hosts Ann, Cornelius, Rita and family are really lovely, and the food was good home cooking, mouthwatering and delicious, The breakfast was superb, with lots of choice including porridge, fruit juice, full irish, poached eggs on toast with bacon or tomato, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, boiled eggs, served with toast, lovely soda bread and finally homemade scones, with plenty of tea and coffee, and we were asked if there was anything else we wanted. Next came the request ,what sandwich would we like for our packed lunch? which came with a chocolate biscuit and fresh fruit, if you want a hot drink, then you would have to take your own flasks. The evening meals were superb, again nothing was to much trouble, the home bred slow roast pork was melt in the mouth, the roast beef was too, and the home made soups were delicious. At 45 euros per night per person for Bed Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner was exceptional value for money. The short walk along the stream and over a small bridge to Eileen Fitzpatricks traditional Irish pub, was well worth it, and the welcome and the Guiness was very good too. We would recommend it to anyone, that wants to explore the area of the Sheeps Head Peninsula.
If you want to explore the Beare Peninsula and the coastline of County Cork, it does take about 20/25mins to reach the mainland from the peninsula, but the thought of the welcome and dinner at night draws you back to this peaceful haven.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front of the house have the view of the sea.

I stayed here with some hiking friends in March. It was a return visit after a few years. The per night package at €45 per person sharing (€55 for single occupancy) was exceptional value. It included Bed with huge breakfast, evening meal and a packed lunch. Superb value when you consider that most B&B's charge that price alone for B&B.
3 of us shared room 2 which is a great family room. Two of us slept in a single and double bed in the main part of the room and the other slept in the attached room with it's comfortable double bed. Each room has an en suite. Our other friend had a double room to herself. Fresh scones were in our room on arrival and they have tea and coffee making facilities there.
Dinner consisted of a choice of two starters, two mains, two desserts, tea/coffee. it was delicious. Soup or Salad, Beef or Fish and fruit meringue or banana split. Four vegetables were served with the main course. Service was excellent, not rushed, just right. I chose the home made vegetable soup. The main course beef was melt in the mouth and the vegetables cooked to perfection.
The following morning we had a huge breakfast served to our table with plenty of everything, right down to the honey for our porridge and a plate of toast, freshly baked brown bread and white scones.

Just before we departed for our day exploring the sheeps head peninsula, our flasks were filled and we were given a well wrapped freshly made doorstop ham and salad sandwich, a piece of fruit and a chocolate bar.

I slept like a log there, the house is in an exceptionally quiet part of the peninsula and as it is stepped back from the road there are no car noises to disturb.

Ann Donegan, and her family (Rita was our chef for the two days), continue to provide a warm warm welcome where nothing is too much trouble for them.

The rooms are simple, yet comfortable. The TV reception isn't great, but that's not what you go to Sheeps head for.

The village of Kilcrohane is tiny. One shop, two pubs, a church and a few more buildings is the extent of it. Fitzpatricks pub which is just a two minute walk from the B&B (yet far enough away to be quiet) is a really quaint place for a pint and is run by the infamous Eileen, who is some character. Here you can meet and chat to the locals who are very friendly and waste no time in giving you advice about the area. The roaring fire there is a bonus and you really know you are in Ireland when you visit Eileens pub. Not to disappoint sporting fans, Eileen has installed a very large wide screen TV on one of the bar walls but it rarely encroaches on conversation.

I would highly recommend this B&B to you if you want to explore beautiful west cork and in particular this peninsula which in my mind is one of the most beautiful in the country.

You can also eat at the restaurant in Bridgeview House, and you don't have to be a resident to do so.
