“Interesting history, good views from the top”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

I thought the £5 fee to do the tour of the Keep and the other mediaeval buildings of this castle is great value as EH don't always have the most competitive entry fees. This price includes an audio guide which consists of amusing banter between an English soldier and a Napoleonic prisoner imparting quite a lot of history about the site, the prisoners of war were responsible for digging out and creating the Portsmouth Harbour of today.
To note steep staircases in the Keep and a stone spiral one to the roof. The Roman walls around the perimeter of the castle are the most complete in Northern Europe.
The free car park may be a bit inadequate in the busy season.

“Much better than expected - allow extra time”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

We had planned to spend some time at Portchester but ended up spending much more as it was a very nice place to stop and just sit and watch the boats in and out of the harbour as well.

The grounds of the castle don't need paying for to walk around which would probably be an hour or two in itself but do make the effort, and time, to go around the castle as well. It's nicely preserved and the interesting stories of Napoleonic prisoners are a good contrast to the Roman heritage.

“Interesting castle, good views from top”

Spent an hour looking around, was worth a look. Views from the top of the tower are good, although it has a very narrow spiral staircase. There is also a tea room at the adjacent church.

“Lovely spot”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

The grounds of the castle are lovey in themselves, nestled on the edge of Portsmouth harbour with glorious views of the Solent. There is a good little walk around the outside of the walls and inside there is plenty of space for children to run about and picnics to be enjoyed.
To get inside the main castle you do have to pay (Free for EH members) entrance includes a free audio which does bring the castle to life. The tour is good and you can wander around at your own leisure.
The tower keep is amazing and the views from the roof are beautiful. Do be aware that there are lots of steps. There are modern wooden staircases within the tower but you use the original stone spiral to get to the roof and these are particularly steep narrow and slippery (and quite fun). You can use these steps to go right back down to the bottom where there is a display/museum area (this can also be accessed from outside for anyone not wanting or able to use the steps)
Toilets are found in the car park and there is a tea room at the church (cannot comment on the tea room as we did not use it)
All in all this is a lovely castle in a lovely spot and well worth a visit.

“Spectacular old castle”
Reviewed August 30, 2013 via mobile

Very well preserved castle with spectacular views from the top of the tower. First few floors easily accessible only the original stone steps leading to the top of the tower a little challenging but well worth the effort. If you are in the area do give it a visit. Shame we could not look around the old church within the grounds but there was a wedding taking place. Paid a visit to the church tea room next door though and very good home made cakes at reasonable prices.
