“good cpl of lazy hours”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Having just moved here we decided to have a look at the local places,,anyway theres not much at this place but at the same time its great,, hard to explain but youll have to see it for yourself ,quite a big place tho we didn't pay to see the castle bit, purely, because it didn't look like it was worth it!
I didn't mention ,you can go into the castle itself tho you only pay for a small part of the whole place
theres a chapel with a graveyard, inside the grounds which funnily enuff having moved 200 miles to here was one of our neighbours in a local village from cornwall!
anyway theres a good wander around the outside of this place to with some great views of the solent,,deffinatly worth a visit!

“Excellent audio presentation, no crowds”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed this castle which is only a short drive from Portsmouth but well away from the crowds. The history of this site is very extensive from Roman times to a prison during the Napoleonic wars. While there isn't much left other than the walls, the audio presentation is first class. An English soldier and French prisoner provide their different interpretations of historic events that have affected the castle in a humorous and informative way. Grounds are very relaxing. Parking is available and free.

“Good place for a walk or picnic”
Reviewed July 20, 2013

Ruined castle with an attractive church within the grounds and a keep you can go up for a fee. Drive o i can get a bit congested at popular times, great place to let kids go mad, have a picnic go for a walk etc. nice views outside of the water looking towards port solent, and the views towards portsdown hill the other. View from the top of the keep is impressive although the stairs could be daunting for the very young, old or infirm

“A great value for money afternoon out”
Reviewed July 17, 2013 via mobile

Visited on a jot and sunny day and really enjoyed the visit. Parking is free and if you just want to walk in the grounds, go in the church and the tea rooms, then that is all free too. It's only £5 to go into the Keep area and its well worth the money. Do take the audio tour as it explains everything.....well worth the money.

“History comes alive”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Very lovely setting and opportunity to use your imagination - remember back to the battles and the defence of Britain. Whilst it is a ruin, there is still plenty to enter and experience, and the church is lovely too.
Cafe is very welcoming.
Great in great weather.
