What can I say, we just loved this castle and its grounds. Fabulous views from the top of the castle, real knee shaker up there, all across the Solent. So much to learn so much to see and absolutely beautiful grounds that are free. Great place for familes, romantic couples and dog walkers alike. Our age group ranged from 10 to 79 and we all had the best time and want to go back.

This is a great castle within Roman walls. So much history around. The audio guide is free and I very much recommend you use it, it was fun and informative and I think it would have been difficult to get the most out of the visit without it.

Within the Roman walls there is a large grassy area which is perfect for a picnic in the sun and just outside the walls is the water so its a great location.

Parking is also free which is really unusual for this sort of attraction.

We visited on a glorious sunny day that made the views spectacular.

There is a large grassy courtyard that is ideal for picnics.

As ever a castle fascinates young and old alike and this is certainly no exception to the rule.

There is an audio tour that my kids loved.

Portchester castle is onwed by English Heritage and is set within the walls of a large Roman walled fort.

Entrance to the fort is free, there is a charge for the castle where, from the tower, there are fantasic views over to Portsmouth and the surrounding countryside.

Within the walls of the fort there is also an interesting Norman church and a large recreational area where you can relax, definately somewhere to while a few hours.

It was lovely. Great views, the grounds are beautiful, my boys and nephews loved it. The keep had very narrow steps leading up to it, which my children loved, and the view from the top was breath taking. You can take a picnic, but the church has a little tea shop attached to it which has really reasonably priced refreshments (Coffee £1, Slice of homemade cake £1)
To go into the Castle, Keep and Museum it was only £13 for a family of four, which was well worth it, but the grounds around it are free. We saw some young children with fishing nets by the moat. Next time we'll time we'll take nets, some outdoor games and plan to stay a bit longer.
