“Adequate for Purpose”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

A simple hotel which served its purpose well for visiting Bonampak and Yaxchilan which were fascinating. The room was fine for a night, if a bit bleak, but it was well insect screened. There was a tv in the room but we didn't turn it on. We had an en suite shower room but the shower was a wet room arrangement and it looked as if the room would get very wet indeed so we didn't use it. The food in the open sided restaurant looking to the river was fine as well, of the chicken and chips type variety. We noticed cabins which looked of a slightly better standard near the swimming pool, they had a veranda with chairs and a view to the pool and river. Unfortunately we didn't notice them until the morning or we would have enquired about them.

This place is pretty basic, but right on the river bank from where you take the boat to amazing Yaxchilan. Friendly but untrained staff tries its best. It's safe, cheap and has a restaurant – and in any case there isn't anything else....

This rating is not a negative comment on the hotel, but rather just a reflection of the fairly basic lodging provided. But then it is primarily a stopping point before heading down the Usumancita river to Yaxchilan or other adventures. As such it is perfectly adequate.

The hours for the restaurant should be noted. It closes at 8:00 PM, so if you have gotten used to dining late in Mexico, you'll need to adjust that. It opens at 7:00 AM. Since our boat to Yaxchilan also left at 7:00 AM that excluded breakfast for us. There is a little convenience store on the property that opens at 7:30 AM. So if you are heading out early, like we were, pick up anything you will want for breakfast the afternoon before.

Leaving early for Yaxchilan was great, there were no other boats on the river to disturb wildlife and we were the only visitors at the ruins. As we were heading back to Frontera Corozal in late morning, a stream of the boats met us heading out.

Stayed here one night while visiting ruins and before crossing to guatamala. Accommodation basic but with mosquito netting and en suite. Startling lack of wildlife at the time I visited, compared to jungle lodges in India. Restaurant food deeply average and everything closed at 8pm so make sure u have plenty of water for the night. Breakfast ok.

Well. What can I say? It was pretty much the only hotel choice for this location.

We tried to use the Escudo Jaguar web site to book a room ourselves. But the booking would not go through. And when there's a snafu after putting your credit card number on a foreign web site, you naturally become concerned.

So I then sent email asking for help. But I got no response.

My friend, who was at home with his mom in El Salvador at the time, tried to make a booking by phone and called many times, but got no answer except, finally, one who picked up and said he had a wrong number (though it was taken from their web site).

Finally, we asked a local travel agent (Monkey Eco Tours) to make the reservation. And she managed it for us.

After five business days, once we were already on travel, the hotel replied to my email asking to make a booking. Not such timely service.

Pluses:
GREAT bug-proofing. FAR SUPERIOR to what we found at hotels in Tikal. Not bothered AT ALL in our one-night stay.
IMPRESSIVE, extremely clean, and fragrant fresh bed linens.
NOT on a generator, so the electricity -- and thus, the all-important ceiling fan -- runs all night. This also made it superior to lodging found in Tikal
For such a budget place, not aesthetically offensive, and with comfortable beds.

Our guide explained this place was set up and built by the Mexcian government for promoting tourism in the region, and then locals were trained in management and asked if they wanted to assume the loan. Of several projects of this kind, he said, Escudo Jaguar / Frontera Corozol was the ONE shining example of success. Two of the three indigenous tribes who banded together and assumed the loan and management were able to pay the loan off early, in 7 years, and after that success, managed to plan and construct a very good little museum, nearby.

Minuses:
Bring ear plugs against the howler monkeys. It won't drown them out if they come near, as they did for us, but it'll help.

The nice story about the assumption of management by local staff also seems to explain why all the staff we encountered -- including those responsible for responding to and assisting with booking requests -- proved pretty much indifferent. During breakfast and our subsequent comings-and-goings, the entire staff seemed to be sitting around in the dining area watching telenovelas. Same with those at the museum visted later in the day.

Very basic room with beds, a table and chairs and a rail to hang clothes. The ceiling is a mosquito net above which is the thatch roof. Very clean. Bathroom was fine. The toilet wouldn't stop flushing but this was fixed very quickly. Huge towels. No A/C but a ceiling fan and continuous power.

Food at the restaurant was OK.

The Escudo Jaguar is the only place , to our knowledge , where to stay in order to be on the river and on the jungle sites before the crowd of tourists gets there. (Their buses arrive already pretty early in the morning.)
If food and quality of the rooms is an important feature for you, you shouldn’t expect much. The restaurant is however rather pleasant, as it is a large open hut.
The few people that stayed there the summer we were there are more the adventurous type.
This area was probably one of our favorite places in the Yucatan, for it has managed to stay rather authentic.
