It’s not that this hotel is bad – it’s just that it’s massively overpriced for what you get. I suspect that Domaine de Fontenay had its heyday several years back, but it’s starting to look very frayed around the edges. Rooms are large – but the furnishings are distinctly 70s and, in our case, the room smelled damp (it was the end of the rainy season, but even so). The bar area definitely looks like it’s seen better days and even the old tortoise looks a bit forlorn in his enclosure. The one stand-out is the private reserve next to the hotel, which is a beautiful place to wander around, including at night – but you don’t need to be a hotel guest to get in. Frankly, there are much nicer places in Joffreville at literally half the price (with a particular mention to the Litchi Tree, where we ate -- very funky, in a Hotel-Costes-meets-Madagascar sort of way!).

P.S. even if you do stay here, don’t use the Domaine’s services for transfers or for local excursions to the Montagne d’Ambre park if you can avoid it. We were charged 178 euros for two of us for a trip to the park, so we were expecting something quite special – but after subtracting the costs of the entrance tickets and the (compulsory) guide, we calculated that were paying nearly 130 euro for the car for a few hours + a picnic -- a rip-off..

If you can, book yourself into the suite! Lovely decor. then it is white table cloth and nice table ware for dinner inside by the fireplace if outside gets a bit chilly (by local standards!). Mr Horner is a great host and manages the kitchen well! Ideal if you want to escape the heat of Diego Suarez and take the time to explore the montagne D'Ambre and the Domaine de Fontenay reserve to see lemurs, camelons and various insects in the wild!

The Good: the place is very nice, close a to a reserve, big bungalows, the owners are very nice and interesting people (the wife is a noble french woman who lived in Seychelles for many years, the husband is a german), the food is very good and you feel at home

The Bad: is not cheap

The Excellent: a 300 years old turtle lives in the Domain. Unbelievable!

This is a beautiful hotel central to the Amber Mountains with it's own private forest reserve.
Our bungalow was immaculate and surrounded by gorgeous gardens that were full of orchids and wildlife.
The restaurant is sublime with spotless kitchens, excellent service and suberb food. My husband and I both enjoy good food and the cuisine here was not only an unexpected delight by any standards but positively miraculous given the location.
The owners of the hotel are totally commited to conservation and rightly proud of their ongoing work in their reserve. I recommend a night walk, a fantastic experience, far far better than the night walks at Perinet.
The level of customer service provided by the owners is above and beyond anything I have experienced, having run out of cigarettes one of the owners kindly donated a few packs of her own to save me having to experience the local brands. Nothing was too much trouble and it was a pleasure to spend time in the (reasonably priced) bar with such delightful, interesting people.
This is not a cheap place to stay but in some cases you get what you pay for and this hotel is worth every penny.
