“Great little find!”
Reviewed September 20, 2011

We stayed at the Blacksmiths Arms to attend a local wedding at Sandburn Hall. The location was quiet, peaceful and beautiful. The rooms are lovely and we had such a kind, warm welcome from the owners who offered us a lift to save on taxi fares! The breakfast was good. We only stayed for one night and I'm a little disappointed that I didn't get to try dome of the pub grub, about which there have been great reviews. We would definitely go back - the room rates were very reasonable. The best thing for us is that the B & B is dog friendly.

A lovely Inn and restaurant, it has only three bedrooms, but this makes it more personal. Andrew and Lorraine are two lovely people who make you feel feel very welcome as soon as you arrive, and nothing is to much trouble for them. We stayed here for two nights on BB&D.
Pro's
Rooms are very clean, large, plenty of storage space and very comfortable.
Food is excellent and plenty of choice, my husband on the 2cd evening had the Flaxton Flipper which is a 14oz battered fish with home made chips, all the food is locally sourced and cooked fresh
We tried to stay for a third night because we enjoyed it so much and needed the rest and relaxation which it gave us, but alas the rooms were fully booked.
Cons
One very small criticism and that is the TV'S in the rooms could be slightly larger.

A fantastic restaurant, fantastic staff and above all fantastic food. we go here at least every other week and have never been disappointed, the food is wonderful. all the staff are very friendly and welcoming. They are always accommodating even when they are really busy which I have to say is, every night we've been in. The place has a lovely warm and friendly atmosphere unlike some other local pubs!! We've recommended this place to numerous people, we can't fault it. Top tip, try the blacksmiths pie!!

We stayed here one night as it was close to Castle Howard. We were greeted with a smile and told that we had been upgraded to the largest room as no one else was staying that night.
The room was very large, with comfortable beds and pillows, lots of natural light and comfortable and stylish furniture. The bathroom was also large and airy, with nice modern fittings and a powerful shower. The whole place was immaculately clean.
The property has a real family feel to it and has a pleasant relaxed, informal atmosphere.
There is a beautiful long garden to the rear.
The pub itself only opens in the evening and is very much a food and ale operation. It is small and cosy, well decorated and maintained. I am a huge fan of real ales and couldn't believe my luck that they had no fewer than 6 different and interesting ales on tap.(I managed four!)
We ate in the pub on our night there and the food was delicious. A nice selection of starters and then the usual steaks, pies and fish dishes that you would expect in a country pub.
Breakfast was also good and as well as the usual fried treat there was some lovely fresh fruit with the ceraels, which was a nice touch.
We would strongly recomend this pub and its accomodation.

An absolutley fantastic place to stay. The people were very friendly and could not be more helpfull. The room was very clean and very comfortable. We had such a good nights sleep. The attention to detail is spot on and is offten missed in most b&bs. The breakfast was first class with a selection of tasty goodies, Would highly recommend and would love to stay again.

We were only staying here for one night because we were attending a wedding at nearby Sandburn Hall, and so went with no great expectations. In the event we wished we had been staying for longer to do justice to our room and the facilities.

Firstly do not be put off by it being a above a pub, this is a pub in a country village not a JD Weatherspoons, and all was peaceful when we turned in on a Saturday night at just gone 11.00pm. Our room was very clean, spacious and comfortable (we were in the triple) with an ample sofa and coffee and side tables and plenty of secondary lighting and a television. The bed was comfortable and made up with good quality, well laundered linen. The tea and coffee making facilities and choices in the room were generous and the bathroom well appointed with bath and power shower and good quality white towels and complementary toiletries.

The owners are helpful and upon learning that we were going to a wedding, offered to either run us to the venue that night so we would only have to get a taxi back to the B&B or to run us to collect our car the following morning if we preferred, which was very kind and saved us a 2nd expensive taxi ride.

Finally the breakfast was far better than you usually receive even in expensive hotels. Alongside the usual cereal/yoghurt options there were fresh strawberries and blackberries. The cooked breakfast had delicious freshly sauteed mushrooms and the bacon and sausages were were the real deal, - no slimey white scum here.

I am not saying that this is a boutique gem at the cutting edge of new british food; it is a country bed and breakfast attached a local pub that does what is does exceptionally well; delivering excellent food and accommodation. We didn't have a chance to try the food served in the pub of an evening but the chalk menu suggested home cooked, inviting food.

This would be an excellent base for exploring York and the Howardian Hills, perhaps particularly for foreign visitors who would get a real flavour of Britain.
