Description: At the Fox & Hounds, the atmosphere & service is friendly & informal with select local beers & a choice of continental lagers & great wines. Diners have the option of eating award-winning Chef, James Rix' sophisticated, but simple menu in the bar, lounge, or the superb chandeliered dining room. In the summer months, you can enjoy eating on our heated, covered terrace. All our steaks are now cooked on the Josper oven, along with whole fish, squid, scallops in their shell and mussels. Our whole ribs of beef for Sunday lunch are also finished in the oven. The oven keeps fish really juicy - it cooks fish rapidly with great flavour & keeps flesh moist as well as enhancing the flavour of our steaks from the sweetness of the charcoal.

“Great service but quality of food very poor.”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

Tried this gastropub in Hunsdon mostly on the back of good reviews on this site and elsewhere.
I had steak and chips and it was far and away the worst steak I've ever had in a restaurant -nothing but gristle and fat. How a chef could put that cut of meat on a grill and deliver it with a straight face is beyond me. Why buy the cheapest cuts of meat and try to dress them up? The £20.00 price added to the insult --it was sent back and removed from my bill.
My 7 year old had a chicken and chips off the child's menu and was still hungry when we left --the serving of chicken was ridiculously small.
My 3 year old had the pasta -tried a bite and left the rest. He ordinarily devours plates of pasta so I tried some myself and then fully understood his position - it was undercooked to the point of inedible.
The speed of service and friendliness of staff was first rate but I think they'd benefit from a new chef.

“Very good, well worth a visit”
Reviewed November 11, 2012 via mobile

Came here for a family gathering and really enjoyed our Sunday lunch. They were very accommodating to our 11 month old daughter and her chicken dish they prepared for her was fantastic. Very good quality and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend this pub as one to come to with young children. The adults' food was also top notch, with a very generous portion size across the board. Overall, a very good lunch -- at over £20/head for two courses, it's not overly cheap, but you get what you pay for.

“Great food and service”

We went to the Fox & Hounds twice so far and both times the food was absolutely delicious and the staff very friendly. Would always go again for a meal for two or a family lunch.

“Good Village Pub”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

Have had a few meals here over the years and the food is consistently good. The chef is the owner and he clearly knows a thing or two about food and the wine list is good too which sounds simple enough but many pubs get it wrong. Service is friendly and informal which suits the place, definitely worth a visit

“Not cheap but very good”
Reviewed October 19, 2012 via mobile

Had a family Sunday lunch here. Food was excellent. Roast beef can often be not so good - either over cooked or tasteless. Here it was excellent. Remember thinking it was exactly what roast beef should taste like. Rest of the family had a variety of dishes and were very pleased. Will return.

Negatives - not many. At the top end of prices for a pub and, given the top end prices, perhaps the furniture in the dining room is a little worn.
