We stayed overnight and had dinner and breakfast. Overall impression is one of poor value for money.

We liked:
* The old Georgian building and riverside location
* the spacious bedroom with lots of hot running water
* the quirky interior decor
* morning toast

We thought things were so-so in terms of:
* food
* drink
* waitressing.

We did not like:
* the sounds of a noisy boiler through the night
* hot and uncomfortable bedding
* off-hand, uncaring and rather unwelcoming attitude of management
* unapologetic failure to meet the dietary needs of my partner (communicated at booking)

Stayed: December 2012, traveled on business

HiIR

Thank you so much for your responses to my direct mails. I have acted on the items you have covered & more & the team are very appreciative of your extended views & what we need to do.

Vegan is now a common language at the Inn & we have published a full training programme on allergies, personal choices & religious beliefs in relation to food across my entire business. I can now say with total confidence that my team know the importance in relation to all of the above.

Soya milk will be awaiting you for future visits!

I look forward to hearing from you in relation to your future visit to The Somers Town Coffee House.

Kind Regards

Tim

We stayed three nights in August and had a triple room which was airy and clean. Windows need some work, I'm sure the wind will whistle through in the winter. Surprisingly no TV in room, although advertised. Food I though was a little expensive and not child friendly with the exception of pizza - which was expensive. Staff friendly enough. Good breakfast, Everything a little tired, needs some updating.

Room Tip: If you want a TV make sure you ask, rooms at the front of the hotel/pub suffer with noise from the b...

I stayed at The Grove Ferry Inn for two nights and have to say that it is a extremely charming hotel.

The downstairs pub / restaurant has a rustic country feel. The drinks are reasonably priced and the homemade pizzas are amazing!

Upstairs, each room has been decorated differently. Each room is a decent size and comes with an en-suite and a seriously comfy bed. My only complaint about the sleeping quarters is the number of spiders that find their way into the rooms - for anyone for a dislike for the nasty little crawlers I would think twice about booking here. Over two days, a total of 12 spiders were removed from my room alone.

The location of the hotel is also good. We really enjoyed sitting on the outside deck next to the canal.

To sum up:
Service = good
Location = good
Food & drink = great
Beds = fantastic

We stayed at the Grove Ferry Inn for one night as it was in a convenient location, close to the venue of a wedding we attended in nearby Preston. All staff were extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful, happily fetching things we requested (sellotape, iron, more tea...) without bother.
We stayed in Room 1 which was fantastic. The room itself was large with a balcony overlooking the river which was perfect for a glass of wine, cup of tea or even to eat dinner if you wish! The bathroom was also large with a bath and super shower and double sinks - a nice touch we thought. (We also managed to have a nosey in Room 5 - which looked just as good!)
Breakfast is served from 9-11am, such a nice change in a bed and breakfast not to have to be up at the crack of dawn for fear of missing service! We both chose the full english which was served promptly and was delicious and well cooked.
We didn't get the chance to eat in the restaurant, but we will definitely be returning for a meal if their fantastic menu is anything to go by!
A highly recommended establishment! Thanks to Vikki and Aron for making it such an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 and 2 have balconies which is a mega luxury!

My husband and I stayed one night and overall were pleased with the experience. The location of the Grove Ferry is very pleasant with lots of opportunity for country walks and trips on the river. The Pub itself doesn't seem to have worked out what "look" it is going for. It is a mixture of modern, quirky and rustic which I didn't feel quite worked. The room we had was nice and spacious with quirky wallpaper. The bed was very comfortable and the bedding clean and fresh. However the sheet was straight on top of the mattress without a mattress protector which I thought was a bit unpleasant. The cleanliness of the room and bathroom was a little disappointing. The carpet didn't look like it had been hoovered and there was a dead fly under the chair. It didn't appear that any dusting had been done either. The bath and sink were clean but floor looked grubby. Lovely towels but nowhere to put them once used and wet.
We booked a table in the restaurant for 7.45. Our table wasn't ready when we got to the bar but was soon made up. However we waited over 15 mins for a waitress to come to take our order for drinks and food. She was very apologetic but nevertheless it was not a good start. The food itself was very tasty (I had the lamb and my husband had the duck). The lamb meal was nice and hot but the duck only just above warm. We could have complained but by that time was very hungry. My husband had the pannacotta dessert which came straight out of the fridge so was fairly solid and too cold. Overall the meal was acceptable. After a good nights sleep (luckily being a cooler evening there wasn't a BBQ being held which was directly below our window) we went down for breakfast in the Pantry. A lovely Full English as well as cereals and toast on offer. A good tasty, filling and well cooked breakfast. Overall a very nice stay but I do feel that attention to general housekeeping should be given more priority.

We stayed for 2 nights in this wonderful riverside location, the room we had was very large, the bed very comfy and a good sized bathroom. Breakfast was perfect, it started at 9am so had the chance to lie in and the choice was excellent. I had a veggie breakfast which was delicious and a good size and my partner was very happy with his choice of sausage and egg on toast.
The staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive throughout our visit. We had an evening meal on the second night and the food was delcious, reasonably priced and well presented. We had the burger, which my boyfriend has been talking about ever since and a mushroom and stilton pizza which was to die for!
Will reccommend to friends and family and hope to visit again soon!

We stayed for 2 nights at The Grove Ferry Inn and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing break. Our room contained a double and a single bed as there was 2 adults and 1 child in our party but, the room was easily large enough to accommodate all of us. Our en-suite bathroom was also large and airy. Both rooms were very clean and tidy and we loved the rustic decor and design. The staff were extremely friendly and made a real fuss of our little boy even taking him in the morning to check if the chickens had laid any eggs. The location was just perfect next to the river and had a really nice relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast was very very good and the food from the evening menu was also especially good.
If you are looking for a regimented, stereotypical, characterless room then don't stay here. If you want an individual room in a great location, friendly staff and yummy food with a warm and welcoming atmosphere then this is the place for you!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to our homely little slice of Kent. The Grove Pantry Pub is an old Georgian manner sitting on The Great River Stour in the middle of the Stodmarsh Nature Reserve. The Georgian manner is now our very own pantry pub with pigs, goats, chickens, pheasants and quails all in our gardens and helping us to be proper country folk. Our menu is brought to you by our very own forager chef who trawls the countryside each season to bring you fresh ingredients. If our chickens are up to it the eggs on your full English will be freshly laid and collected that morning and if you cant quite polish the breakfast of don't worry Lily and Pickle our pigs will eat the left overs except for the bacon naturally. If you are naughty during your stay the team might rope you in to helping pick the fresh veg, herbs and fruit from our garden or feel free to volunteer and you might get a free slice of cake. But don't forget there is loads to be seeing and doing in the local area including boat trips chartered from the pub and pleasant walks around the nature reserve that boasts some very rare birds and beautiful panoramic views of the marsh and river. Don't expect a glitzy spanking hotel but expect loads of character, lovely old rooms with all the facilities you need to spend a weekend in the country with the added benefit of a short hop to the beach or Canterbury itself. The pub has its very own pantry area where you can pick and choose items made by the team, we have open fires and stoves, plenty of comfy chairs, a menu to make your mouth water, ales racked up on the bar and some scrumptious wines. The rooms are big and airy in that typical Georgian fashion, each is individually styled and has its own bathroom. All rooms have large sash windows overlooking either the river or across our front garden into the nature reserve. oooh! ... more   less
