“What a great find !”
Reviewed August 24, 2012

We were travelling to Canterbury, in the middle of the afternoon, - a time when a lot of pubs have stopped serving. We were looking for somewhere to eat and having noticed the sign on the main road we decided to stop and try out the Artichoke. We did not know what to expect, but what a great find ! The garden was busy, the restaurant likewise, but the bar area thankfully had room. We visited with our 8 year-old.
Even at 3 in the afternoon, the place was full of walkers, cyclists and families. Whilst we had to understandably wait a while, the food when it arrived was fantastic.
The mixed grill is enormous, and apparently the plates are often not cleared, but I gave it my best shot ! Tremendous value for money. Kid's meals are also excellent, with chicken nuggets made from real chicken breast ! We will definitely return (even though it is not local for us), and have no hesitation in recommending the Artichoke to friends and family. Friendly staff and all together a great experience. Thank-you.

“Fantastic 15th Century Traditional Pub”
Reviewed August 19, 2012

We were passing through Chartham while looking for something to eat and saw the Artichoke, not knowing what to expect. Inside was a great atmosphere with multiple families eating meals and a woodburner going strong at the heart of the medieval looking building. The menus featured a wide range of meals and desserts. The portions we recieved were massive and very tasty. The staff were very friendly and chatty, very obliging to help. The building has alot of history within it and is well worth a look round at the photos and documents that build up the history. Even better the meal bill only came to just over £25 for three main meals and three pints of blackcurrent soda, fantastic value!

“Great food, sensibly priced”

Perfect meal, fresh and home cooked. Soft music in background which is ideal. Would recommend booking a table as deservedly quite busy. As locals we will now be regulars

“Friendly service and massive portions!”
Reviewed August 6, 2012 via mobile

2 sleep deprived parents and 1 four week old baby decided to go for dinner whilst Nana baby sat the 2 older children. Shown to a draft free table and enjoyed a good beer whilst looking at the menu. Good pub grub but, be warned, the portions are massive! My scallop starter in a vermouth cream sauce came with half a baguette and a decent sized salad. My wife's battered Brie was 2 big wedges. Main courses were large as well with all the trimmings and plenty of flavour. Just after they arrived baby kicked off so we asked if a 'doggy bag' was possible. They promptly wrapped our plates in foil and told us to drop them back when we had done! Great service, first visit but won't be our last (although we might skip starter next time!)

“Only dine here if you are hungry”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

An old shepherd neame country pub, very attentive staff, average drink availibility. A good menu range with specials board, make sure you don't eat before you go, in fact don't eat the previous day, these meals are enormous, good value for money, well worth a visit.
