“Amazing resort with great view”
Reviewed July 14, 2013

It was already 7Pm when we (group of 7 friends) reached Khopasi and our Jeep couldn't climb upto Balthali. The resort management sent us a 4WD jeep. They welcomed us with juice and the dinner was good. We had a nice barbecue and good room. Above all WIFI was good nevertheless we didnt go there to use Internet. Next day we took a walk from resort to Khopasi and the real fun happened on the road. Although due to rainy season road being bit slippy it was too much fun crossing river, walking through forest etc.

the hotel is in an incredible nice location, with a great view to the valley in 3 directions. The hotel itself is clean and comfortable.
The food is good and the staff very friendly. We would have liked to stay longer there.
The surroundings are very nice for trekking. We would definitely come back again if in the area.

Room Tip: the upper floor has a nicer view.

After the chaos of Bhaktapur during Bisket Jatra a night at Balthali was a complete antidote. A couple of hours drive from Kathmandu, including the hilarious final 25 minutes up the hill (preferably in a jeep) landed us in this haven of tranquility. Food was quite good, and the rooms were more than adequate. Initially I was slightly concerned as we were led down the steps to find our room, but discovered that the 'basement' room had a spectacular view covering about 270 degrees across the verdant valleys below, and its own terrace. It would even have given us superb views of the mountains had they not been hidden by haze !
Being woken at 6 - 30 is not normally something I like, but when the disturbance is caused by a family of monkeys sitting on the terrace outside my window I can forgive the wake-up call !
The surrounding area is very attractive, and when next I visit (as I will) I think that it will be for at least two nights to give time to enjoy it.
My only criticism was the amount of litter left around by (mainly Indian) visitors. Mentioning this to the owner he immediately had a cleaning squad out !

This is a fairytale hotel perched high above the noise and smells of Kathmandu's eastern suburbs. The views in every direction are spectacular while the foreground is alive with huge butterflies, rich birdlife and monkeys feasting on fruit trees in the garden.

The bedrooms are adequate (aren't some people SO fussy?) and the food excellent, even if the dishes that arrived on the table bore only a loose relationship with the menu. Oddities included a complimentary mushroom soup with the delicious tang of roast garlic and a surprise dessert of tasty apple fritter. Two of our small party declared it the best evening meal they'd had during our stay in KTM.

Breakfast, featuring various home-baked breads, was equally fine.

Immediately outide the hotel are walks of any length in the stunning countryside - although be prepared for some serious gradients.

All the staff were friendly and chatty, not least the owner, Ram, who is immensely proud of the mini-resort he has created out of a deserted hilltop.

Two criticisms: The bottled water in our room had a broken seal and had obviously been re-filled. Not good news when we're told never to drink tap water. However, they insisted that the local spring water was pure (which I can believe, the site being so high up and not dependent on polluted rivers) but agreed always to provide unopened bottles for foreign tourists in future.

The other gripe was being asked to eat dinner indoors rather than on the terrace "because we have already laid the table". I didn't travel 5,000 miles to sit in a stuffy room when we could be enjoying sunset over the Himalayas on a warm spring evening! (That said, the midges were paying special attention to one of our group, who was quite glad to escape them.)

Wi-fi internet is free and remarkably fast thanks to a microwave link direct to a mast across the valley.

Balthali is not a place for nightclubbers but perfect for a quiet getaway with a good book. It's so perfect in so many ways that I won't let those criticisms get in the way of awarding five stars.

Just beyond Panauti town and Khopasi (40 KM southeast from Kathmandu) lies one of the rich cultural and natural destination of Balthali, where upon sits on top of a hill –Balthali Village Resort – a small, cozy retreat with bird's eye view of green terrace fields .

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter.

If you want a quick retreat from the dust and traffic of Kathmandu with some light trekking thrown in then this beautiful resort (about 40 km southeast from Kathmandu) is the place to go. One can reach this resort by walking up a trail from Khopasi village a few minutes’ drive from Panauti (which itself is a few minutes’ drive from Banepa). The trail is moderately steep and takes about an hour or so to complete, passing through two suspension bridges. If you are not in a condition to walk up the trail, you can also reach there on a four-wheel drive on a typical Nepali hill road, meaning essentially an unpaved hilly road with sharp turns and barely a space for two cars in opposite directions.
Once you get there, the scene is quite breath-taking. On a clear day the view consist of the terraced field below you and the Himalayan range behind the mid-mountains. The resort sits on top of a hill in the Balthali village, a quiet place with friendly residents. One can walk around the village enjoying the fauna & flora. The resort itself has all the modern amenities (including wi-fi) and nice clean rooms, some of them with great views.
The food is great (you have a choice of Nepali or Continental dishes), the view is great and above all the staff and the owners are amazing. I strongly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with the view of the Himalyas.

The rooms and bathroom were a little disappointing after other places we'd stayed but they are perfectly adequate. The padlock and bolt on the door was a bit primitive. The pleasant hilltop location was nice. The staff are helpful - the cook's daughter is delightful. Food is pretty good and plentiful. For cool evenings they light an open fire in the restaurant area. Good walking on the doorstep and a good place to stay.
