Lifupa Conservation Lodge
Reviewed January 27, 2014

There is no where in the World where one will have such a wonderful experience.

Adding to this, the money helps the local people and is used to finance the protection of the animals.

The staff there are wonderful and the vistas are fantastic!

The true wonders of the natural world are the creatures that you will see there! From elephants to all the wonderful animals one would expect!

Midway through a semester teaching in Malawi, I spent a rejuvenating weekend at Lifupa watching animals come and go, listening to new bird songs. and taking in the majesty of the sky, the bush and the water. I learned about the animals and plants from knowledgable park rangers and friendly staff members, enjoyed the very best meals I had in Malawi and slept peacefully in cozy quarters. Most of all I appreciated not having an agenda other than to be still and look for elephants slowly marching through the trees on their way to drink and bathe at the water hole. I came from Mzuzu and recommend taking the AXA bus to Kasungu (much faster and more predictable than the National) and asking the lodge to arrange for Maxwell to drive you out to the park.

When I remember Lifupa, I see our tent next to the water, a little fire and wine at night; the beautiful communal veranda and kitchen on the campsite, where we cooked and grabbed a book when the sun was high in the sky. I loved the early morning walk around the dam. The freshness of nature after a cool night. The residential African fish eagle. Playing bao in the restaurant.
But mainly I loved the people here. The staff on the campsite was so helpfull, always in for a chat. How Dominique and Matthieu truly care for the park. And our neighbours at the campsite. For Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, they monitored on a daily basis newly released baboons in the park. The ladies started making lovely handicrafts which make for great presents to bring home. Go and support them!

The park is vast and animals have been poached in large numbers. Although this is changing, don't feel disappointed when your goal is to spot the big five. But if you are after a wild feel, this is it. With Lilongwe so close.

Lifupa is the perfect place to unplug and simply enjoy being in a beautiful place. Our family stayed 2 nights here and really felt like we had an incredible experience. The hippos, elephants, birds, bush bucks, and even warthog were all active around the dam. Watching the sunrise over the water at 5:00 was inspiring. No electricity meant my kids ran around, played cards, read and talked instead of watching TV. We walked around the dam with a guide, took a drive to Black Rock and hiked up to see the views to Zambia (and saw a few Zebra on the way!). Most importantly, we learned of the anti-poaching efforts that the lodge supports. My children have seen first-hand the elephants that are threatened and met the people who have a passion and determination to protect the animals in Kasungu. This is not a luxury resort - this is a conservation lodge. The accommodations are basic, but comfortable. The food was excellent and extra attention was given to make sure the kids were happy with the menu. I would recommend this lodge to those seeking a back to basics, very low key, remote bush experience.

We stayed at Lifupa Lodge for 5 nights in early September this year. Remke is an exceptional host who made sure that we had everything we needed for a wonderful stay. The other staff were also very helpful and kind. The food was excellent, interesting and very tasty and we had a choice each time and could choose what time we had it too.The rondavel was clean and comfortable and we could see the lake from our bed!

We saw elephants and hippos batheing in the lake every day, just as we were promised and we also saw Vervet monkeys, water buffalo, Piku antelope and many different birds. It was wonderful to sit and watch the elephants playing together for ages in the calm relaxed setting. The hippos silently popping their eyebrows above the water from various places on the lake never failed to make me laugh!

We went for a drive to Blackrock to watch the sunset, for a game drive and a safari walk right round the lake getting safely close enough to the hippos to take some really good photos. We also had a walk around the lodge site with Mr Henry, a very gentle local man, who explained to us what the various trees and plants were, and some still are used for. That was very interesting too.

I would very happily visit Lifupa Lodge again and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stop life's big rush and take time out to enjoy sitting quietly and observing nature as it should be.

We stayed for a couple of days in a hut near the lake. The view is great and at night you can hear the hippo's. The facilities are nice and basic. We brought our own food to cook and ate one evening at the restaurant as well. The Dutch manager cooked a very nice vegan/vegetarian dinner. She's very involved with the park (anti-paching) and local community (school garden project). We visited Black Rock, which had a terrific view and went on a night drive which basically meant driving trough tall grass in the dark (don't forget to put a spotlight on your roof like we did!).

we a family of three stayed for the weekend at lifupa conservation lodge. it is managed by two dutch ladies .both of them are very friendly . the cottage that we stayed overlooks the lake. since the lake is the mainsource of water for animals, one gets to see the animals from the cottage itself. the morning safari is a brisk walk in the forests for 2hours. though the park has less animals to spot, yet it is a wonderful place to relax and unwind . the black rock is a place 6km inside , a small rock mountain . from the top u get an amazing view of the entire reserve, almost till the zambian border.we felt like lion king on top of the rock, viewing his kingdom. but the one thing that we can never forget and will always cherish is the view of the night sky, with no lights in the lodge.. the sky was a blue screen with millions and millions of stars twinkling ..it was unbelievable as back home in lilongwe , just 120km away we never see the sky with so many stars..if not for anything else atleast for the night view of the sky one can definitely visit lufupa lodge..

Room Tip: carry a rechargeable torchlight as there is no electricity after 7pm. also be equipped with a good s...
