Been there twice. An hour's drive from Pretoria. The last stretch is on gravel. The reserve's roads have suffered quite badly during the rains in March, but you can still go everywhere in a robust sedan. The place is great, if a bit strenuous because of the deep sand, for mountainbiking. Just perfect to cycle through and to come across hordes of zebras and bokkies. The true gem, though, is the Penduka Trail. Just six kilometres, but you will need between 90 minutes and two hours, depending on your fitness. But definitely worth the effort. You will be rewarded by a wonderful landscape, a romantic little river and very nice vistas. Particularly good in winter, when there are no crowds. The trail is easy to find, just follow the signs towards the Wilge river.

Ezemvelo is a 2 hour drive from Jozi CBD and is a world away from the craziness. Isolated and quiet with a wide variety of wildlife that come right up to the lodges. The swimming pool is great for cooling down after a long day of touring and there are plenty of amazing hiking paths to take to build up a sweat!

What a surprise - so close to JHB. We stayed as guests of the owners / tenants of a renovated homestead on the property, and had a total of 7 children in the party. They had a pool, which helped cool off the kids as it was quite warm in the days. Very quiet at night, listening to bats and night-jars.

The Wilge river runs through the property, and is wide and navigable in kayak. Not suitable for drinking, as the mines upstream dump some toxins, but still clean enough for fish. Surprised not to see much birdlife. Very scenic and fun.

The kids rode bicycles during the day, and rode right past big herds of zebra and wildebeest. Not threatening, but enough of a 'frisson' that they will I am sure remember it for years.

I'm not one for complaining about roughing it, however Ezemvelo's Chalets are beyond roughing it. The accommodation was filthy, the stove and refrigerators were broken and barely useable, the bathrooms was in a state of disrepair and the beds were really uncomfortable.

Beside the accommodation it is a really lovely park with a huge variety of wildlife and the staff were quite friendly. However if you're planning on staying overnight, I really wouldn't recommend it.
