“Worst ever service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

By far the worst ever service I have ever experienced in a beach resort in the Philippines. I would encourage everyone to shy away from this resort. We stayed here overnight on 1st September 2012. We booked three big rooms. One room is occupied by my family and the rest for the other relatives in our group.

We left early to catch the flight back to Hong kong but the rest of the group remained to settle the bills. The next day we called Manila to check up on them. We were flabbergasted when we learned that they had been charged P350 each for two missing old towels and slippers, we didn’t even know we had in our room.

I believe in our haste to head back to Manila airport we probably misplaced the old and worn out towels in the pool or canteen.

Now why would charge us with things that have been misplaced and definitely still within the vicinity of the hotel and therefore still with them. My relatives offered all their bags to be opened and checked to prove that we never took any of these old things that they indirectly suggested we did? And the slippers? We did not even know they provided ones as we didn’t see any.

We never even used their shampoos, soap because we brought our own towels, toiletries, shampoos, conditioners soap, slippers etc.

We have been to the best resort in the Philippines and even overseas and we never, in all honesty, taken any items which are new and considerably better. Just recently, my family spent a week in bohol beach resort and the service is top notch coupled that with a lot of freebies such as welcome drinks, breakfast and lunch etc and you will understand its business is thriving.

In comparison matanbungkay hotel beach resort is zilch, nada, zero. No wonder, with all the information available on the net, I only heard about this resort on that particular day when my sis-in-law informed me.

Matabungkay Hotel Beach Resort is old, dilapidated and poorly maintained. They don’t even provide a welcome drinks and newspaper. The wi-fi they advertise is only available in the lobby. And the Cable TV? They switch it off at midnight !

When we first visited in June we were very impressed and wrote an apprpriate review. I was then very surprised to read some of the other reviews and wondered if we had all stayed at the same hotel.

We decided to revisit as my son is visiting and went this weekend following the recent storms. The main beach was seriously damaged but the Resort was apparantly untouched having been completely cleaned up.

We decided to improve our rating as the hotel more than lives up to our expectations especially the extensive grounds and large pool which give room for privacy, the extremely large size of the rooms which include a large screened lanai and the excellent staff attitude.

Perople should remember, however, that it is not a new property. The age of the property is, in our eyes, both good and bad. It means extensive and well developed gardens and a large and well designed public area but obvously there are some signs of age and maintainance, though good is not perfect.

The property is not 5 star but neither are any of the other properties in this area. We visited seven other properties in the course of exploring the area and would only rate The Coral Beach Club as a real alternative..

The rooms at The Coral Beach Club are newer and better equipped, staff seem extremely friendly and attentive and were happy to show us around. However, we would rate the Resort higher mainly due to size of the gounds which are rather small and the lack of a private beach.

The private beach at the Resort allows you to enjoy a very large beach area without being bothered by vendors or boatmen or in fact by crowds. All facilities are available at the Resort including a Dive Shop and boat, Billiard Tables, Internet Cafe, beauty shop, the pool is also open and manned at night, etc. There is however no room service..

For me it is an extremely enjoyable place for a relaxing family seaside vacation.

Room Tip: The seaside cottages would be excellent for a family with an attic bedroom for parents and a large l...

Perfect for the whole family! The room service may be a bit disappointing, but the entire experience was well worth it! The pool and the beach are only available til 11pm, but the open bar more than makes up for it! The all you can eat is superb!

My family and I booked for an overnight stay at this hotel June of last year. I booked my reservations thru their website. The pictures in their website would make you believe that it's a nice resort. But when we got there, the place wasn't what I expected.The resort was already old and not well maintained. Our room was on the 4th floor of what looked like an old dormitory. Though it was spacious and clean, it was unlike the pictures shown in the site. It was dim-lit. The feel would be like staying in an old apartment. The door only had a bolt and lock. The doorknob wasn't working. The breakfast buffet was so-so. The dinner buffet was a bit pricey. The beach wasn't enticing too. The only plus for this resort is the pool where my kids enjoyed swimming. Cleaned and well maintained. Though a little bit crowded because there are families for day-trip picnics. An d the easter egg hunting activities they made for the kids.
I wouldn't want to go back here again. I think there are other places more worthy of the price.

If you are looking for a beach getaway close to Manila, Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel is a worthy choice. It only took two hours to get to this iconic resort. The best part of the car ride is that the roads were very favorable: smooth and well made, plus there were numerous signs to the resort which made sure we found our way.

My children from four to eleven years old relished their swimming time. My four-year old utterly enjoyed the toddler slides that led to the kiddie pool. The beach has very fine sand where you can walk barefoot, unlike the beaches in LAIA, Batangas fronting Aquatico, Aqua Verde, and Sabangan, which are teaming with bothersome pebbles. The waters are shallow and calm - this made me feel secure that my toddler was safe. There were picturesque bamboo 'balsas' (floating cottages) that lined the shore.

We stayed in the third floor suites which were very spacious and comfortable. The only downside was that the walk from the suites to the beach was quite long. It was worth it though since these suites were newly renovated and were very comfortable. The suites featured cold airconditioners in this sweltering heat, firm mattresses, a dining area, living area as well.

We had three meals in the hotel - breakfast, lunch and dinner. I particularly enjoyed the bulalo soup and pinakbet dish. We rode the pump boat and the kayak and it was fantastic fun in the clear and calm waters of Matabungkay. My favorite feature in the hotel was the Solea Spa. My highly-trained therapist Lea gave me a strong, rhythmic full body massage (PhP600)which fully relaxed and re-energized me!

I hope to go back to Matabungkay Beach Resort and Hotel for the New Year with my family, I hear the resort offers a great view and a lot of fun activities for the family during New Year.

Room Tip: I can only vouch for the newly renovated Nasugbu and Calaca Suites. They are cold, comfy and have co...

Matabungkay Beach Resort was built in the end of the 70's as a private resort, it has since transformed into a public resort and is showing signs of age, however this is both good and bad. The grounds have wonderful mature trees and the architecture is a classis of its period with many Hawaiian influences.
The rooms are extremely large with private lanais but the furniture looks a little lost in the size of the rooms. The room we were in had some maintainance issues with tiles lifting on the floor and elderly fittings in the cr but everything was clean and worked, including the full cable tv.
For us the best point was the excellent grounds with many mature trees at the 'whiter' end of Matabungkay beach with an extensive beachfront which connected to the main beach.
It has the advantage of enjoying the privacy or walking to the main beach.
The sea is extremely clean but has seagrass beds which we enjoyed exploring and is very shallow but if you wish to swim there are two clean pools, the small one with a slide.
Staff are very helpful and courteous.
Food is a bit basic for such a resort but is reasonably priced and there are easy to reach outside alternatives.
This is not a 5 star Manila hotel but is extremely relaxing, has excellent location and grounds and is very good value for money.

Room Tip: The beach cottages are very cute but the spiral staircase to the attic bedroom may be difficult for...

1. The rooms are worst than the UP dormitories, except for the airconditioner and hot water. These are infested with mosquitoes and cockroaches;
2. Our bath room was slow to drain, lacking in amenities, no hair dryer, no hooks to hang your stuff, no exhaust fan, no bidet. The sink is too low and small with dilapidated counter. The counter rack is tilted forward which cause your stuff to slide down. The water coming out of the faucet is a bit like a hard water, where you don't feel clean even after taking a bath.
3. Their expensive food also sucks, not much a variety;
4. Room prices are also expensive vs what you get. Budget hotels like Microtel will feel like heaven once you have tried MBRH rooms;
5. Rooms also are lacking in amenities. No free water, no free coffee and tea which are now common even in budget hotels;
6. We were also visited by brownout during our stay. They have a weird way of distributing power in all the rooms because some rooms were under brownouts and some don't.
7. The pillows are too high that you cannot even use them.
8.. The ref is also tilting forward such that when you open it, the contents fall in front of you.
9. The location is not also good and hte beach water does not look that clean either.

In conclusion, this hotel is extremely outmoded and needs a big makeover. The GM should be fired for doing a very poor job. He should at least visit other hotels which are less costlier so that he can compare. In their survey form, they should find out how many of the customers are returning guests. It was our first time to try this hotel. But one thing is sure, We will never go back for it.

Room Tip: Don't even think try it or you will regret it.
