Mahikeng Lodge
Reviewed April 28, 2014

After having a stressful school term for both daughters and parents, coming to Mahikeng Lodge was just what we needed! A peaceful, relaxing luxury lodge with a lovely braai area up by the pool where you can listen to the sounds of nature while looking at the stars! The luxury accommodation was spacious and spotless, and made us feel at home. Simon and the staff attended to our every need. The highlight was the mountain bikes for hire! There is nothing better than cycling through a game reserve through all the animals. The animals are very well kept and happy! My wife LOVED the baby giraffe! I would highly recommend this place to any family who want to have a relaxing time away and for anyone who loves mountain biking.

Self catering lodge an hour from Johannesburg. Private, quiet and perfectly situated for a short stay game safari. Simon, the game ranger is a fantastic guide and the sundowner stop on the game drive is a little piece of heaven. The perfect escape from the city.

We spent the Easter weekend at Mahikeng Lodge. What a wonderful place to relax and unwind - just what we needed with the fast pace of life in the city. We were amazed to find ourselves in the tranquility of this spectacular reserve and only an hour away from home! If you are travelling from Magaliesburg on the R509, take care to look for the Lodge signage on the right hand side of the road – not the left!
The location of the Lodge is truly amazing with breath-taking scenery into the valley below. The Lodge is beautifully set out with all amenities provided for - rock pool, gas braais on each balcony, DSTV, pool towels, and very comfy beds with warm duvets. There are only four double chalets, which means it is not crowded and wonderfully quiet and peaceful. The chalets are serviced, very clean and well designed with large living areas and bedrooms - both floors have balconies. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with sun loungers on the balcony and outdoor shower. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need for self-catering, including extras such as drinking water purification, casserole dishes, dish wash liquid, salt and pepper cellars and even toothpicks! There is a small store at the entrance of the reserve and grocery stores in Magaliesburg for supplies.
Our booking was handled very efficiently by Byron, who also attended to our special requirement of a separate shower. There is only one unit with a free standing shower – the others are within the bathtub, but perfectly acceptable.
On arrival we were met and assisted by Simon the resident ranger as well as the friendly staff at the Lodge. The game-drive with Simon is highly recommended. Whilst there is an additional cost for this, it is well worthwhile as you are able to see the resident game at close range and discover the diverse areas of the Reserve. The most memorable experience and highlight of the drive for us was the interaction with the two resident Rhino. Simon is a very friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable person and an asset to the Reserve.
We had a wonderful stay at Mahikeng, and we will definitely be back!

What a gem just an hour's drive from Johannesburg. We spent two nights at the lodge where peace and calm prevails. We were met at the gate by Ranger Simon who went the extra mile to make our stay memorable. The Lodges are well equipped, very spacious and even have extra touches like underfloor heating throughout. We fortunately had great weather so did not need to use it. Long walks as well a game drive allowed us to get up close to the game. Meeting the two young rhinos was also a treat. The peace and tranquility seeps into your soul so that you can once again face the pressures of urban life.
