Forest Gate Lodge
Ranked #1 of 3 Ashurst B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 10, 2014

Spent three nights here. It was really clean and comfortable. Our sons had a family room which was really spacious even though it has two beds, one of which was a double. Our double room was much smaller but still quite comfy. Both rooms were sited at the rear and overlooked a beautiful lawn. The owners were very welcoming. The full English breakfast was prepared with care and was superb. As the food was sourced from a local farm, it was really delicious....especially the bacon! I was impressed by the wonderful history of the 'coach house' at the bottom of the garden.
We hired cycles for the day from the 'Happy Cheese' pub, only a short distance away. However most of us were 'saddle sore' after a ride to picturesque Lyndhurst. Close to the B&B there is also a bus stop, and Ashurst station is only a few minutes away. Less than a mile away in the opposite direction there is a mini supermarket.
Also had an excellent Chinese takeaway from a restaurant just a 'stone's throw' away. We were allowed to eat this meal in the breakfast room....and once again we appreciated the hospitality we were offered. As this is only a family run B&B, we were quite happy to trust them with our belongings.
Overall we spent an enjoyable holiday here, made even better by the owners who made us feel like we were part of the family

We booked this B&B because we were interested in visiting the Dorchester area, but we wished that we had allowed some time to explore the New Forest. As others have said, Ashurst provides all you would need in terms of food establishments, both pubs and takeaway, within walking distance of the B&B, and the owners were very nice to allow us to use the dining room for bringing in takeaway in the evening. Lyndhurst, just a few miles down the road is a bigger town, and offers much more in the way of restaurants, shopping, and a fantastic visitor's centre for the New Forest park. I would have liked more time to explore the town and park as well.

Our room was a tad small, especially the en suite bathroom (one of those tight fits built into the corner of a bedroom), but it was extremely clean and comfortable. Although the B&B is situated on the main road through the New Forest, there was very little noise at night. It's a quiet part of the world after the sun goes down! And the breakfasts were fantastic - they actually offer choices within the full English breakfast offering, and were willing to mix it up a bit for my husband per his request. The owners are very attentive and willing to please. Most pleasant!

Room Tip: You might want to ask for a room on the back of the house, just in case there is traffic at night. W...

This b&b is a great place to stay as a base for exploring the New Forest. It is a 5-minute drive from Lyndhurst, which has a useful tourist information centre. Our room was spotlessly clean, spacious and comfortable, with a lovely view over the beautiful garden. Although it is on a main road, we could not hear any noise. The owners were very welcoming and friendly. The breakfast selection is excellent and cooked to a very high standard. The only slight negative was the size of the bathroom and the very noisy saniflo system, but this is easily outweighed by the positives. There are some nice pubs within walking distance. I would happily return here and would recommend this b&b.

After reading great reviews about this place, we thought we would book up a week and enjoy the new forest.

We arrived a little early, 2 hours early actually as we didnt realise we couldnt check in until 4pm. This wasnt a problem though as the owner suggested we could drop our bags off and wonder down the road for a snack etc...

The owner is lovely, really attentive
The full english breakfast was sooooo good! a really treat every morning.
The rooms are lovely, just what you need at the end of the day!
The location is perfect as it is in easy driving distance to so many places in the area, or walking distance if you like your walks.
Again, on the location, literally on your doorstep you have a chip shop, a chinese, an indian, a bistro, a vets (if you need it , lol!), a car sales/garage, a hand car wash, a post office, a co op (further down the road) & a pub (the happy cheese)...im sure i have missed something out!...but you get my drift, basically within 30 seconds walk, you have everything you need if you dont want to drive. There is also a train station a short walk down the service road, a hospital, a bus stop and another pub over the railway bridge (the new forest hotel).

So yes, all in all, do stay here! it is a lovely place and a great location! enjoy yourselves! :) i hope this review has helped you out!

Room Tip: Mind your step getting into the shower! its higher than you expect, we both tripped over this!

This B&B has lovely owners who are discreet enough to leave you alone but on hand if you need something. The room was lovely and a good size for the two of us (really, 4 people could have slept in the 2 double beds, but as it goes we took one each ;) - looking out onto the well kept garden was a joy and the fact that it all backed onto the New Forest even better. The Breakfast was nice and it was good that you could chop and change/choose from the offered items. All was freshly cooked which meant you had to wait a little bit but that was no problem at all. I would definitely recommend this B&B and stay again.

Room Tip: Room number 5 was a good size, and overlooked the garden.

I must just say that the staff were very friendly and accomodating by letting us use the dining room to eat our takeaway. She was also informative about the area. The room was very small and face out onto the roofs of a row of shops. The view of the chinese take away extractor chimney and the fumes was nt pleasant. The towels were so small, not much bigger than a hand towel and very thin. The cooked breakfast was plentyfull but the bacon was raw in some places,so could nt eat it.Sausages were good two mornings out of four Other two mornings they were of poor quality(pink and doughy)Also the decor is very dated and poor quality furniture in the bedroom.I would expect a liitle bit more effort needs to be put into this establishment to bring it up to date and todays standards

Room Tip: Not the side room
