“Lovely place, but disappointing host”
Reviewed October 30, 2010

When we arrived (after 3.30 as instructed to) we knocked on the door twice to receive no answer. John was in the house but had not answered the door to us for some reason. When Janet pulled up she did apologise and was very welcoming (as were the lovely dogs).

John was not at all welcoming. We had brought our little dog with us (which Janet had approved beforehand) and were made to feel most uncomfortable by John for bringing him. Furthermore, when my daughter was ill and could not make it to breakfast one morning he did not even respond when this was mentioned - he completely ignored it without even an 'oh dear'.

We would recommend the B& B on the basis of the rooms, that were lovely and clean, and the house which was most picturesque! We also did love the location - the village was charming, and the horse riding was only minutes away. It was a shame that John had not been more friendly!

What the family omit to mention is that I had to ask them not to wash their dirty dog off in the en-suite shower!! This is an example of why we have had to stop taking dogs; the behaviour of the owners!! This rather spoiled the atmosphere. When they arrived I had not been well and had gone to bed. I had set the alarm for 3.30 and had got up, but not heard any door bell ( I don’t think they rang it). Janet was back before 3.40 so they weren’t waiting long. I m sorry if I didn’t express any concern for the girl with a migraine, it was particularly hectic in breakfast that morning but that was obviously an oversight on my part..

My mum and I have just returned from 4 nights at Wayside Cottage, and we are very impressed with what we found. A warm greeting upon our arrival from John, who made us feel very welcome; as did the pot of tea promptly served in the garden.
We staying in a twin ground floor room and found it to be very quiet, despite the B&B being fully booked. The en-suite facilities were clean and modern; similarly the room itself was immaculate and very comfortable.
The home-made bread and jams at breakfast were a lovely touch, and breakfast as a whole was delicious.
As hosts, Janet and John were very friendly and helpful but not imposing. They are obviously well practiced at the art of running a B&B. As were their three little dogs who are impeccably behaved. The property and it's grounds as a whole are beautiful and perfectly placed for exploring the New Forest.
Considering the attention to detail and comfort at Wayside Cottage, my mum and I both feel it is excellent value for money and would not hesitate to stay with Janet and John again.

Just got back from staying in this cottage once again and enjoyed it more than the last visit. We even brought my parents along and they loved it just the same. Really lovely atmosphere and homely. Breakfast was lovely again and we will definitely be staying here again. Thanks Janet and John

My Mum and I stayed at Wayside Cottage for one night and were very pleasantly surprised at the beautiful cottage and gardens, friendly owners and excellent location. The whole place was exceptionally clean, including our room which looked out on to the pretty garden. The bed was comfortable and tea, coffee and even cookies were laid on in our room. The breakfast was lovely, there was a huge selection of food to choose from, all of which was hot and very tasty. The owners bake fresh bread for the toast, which was a really nice touch. Would definitely go back there and have already recommended it to friends and family.

Stayed just one night at this charming, picturesque B&B in the New Forest. Attention to detail was excellent, quality of breakfast items was first class down to the homemade bread and preserves. The location of Wayside Cottage is perfect for exploring the New Forest and with a delicious pot of tea served on arrival in the pretty patioed garden proved an excellent start to the stay. Would absolutely go back and highly recommend Wayside Cottage to anyone visiting the New Forest.

This was my 4th short stay at Wayside Cottage - I have never been disappointed. The welcome is friendly, and the quality of the accommodation, breakfast and service is excellent. I will certainly be visiting a 5th time when I have the chance.
