Owner description: The island to the northeast of Singapore is the only place to see an example of the traditional kampong villages that once covered the city-state. It’s a go-to spot for cyclists and hikers with miles of nature trails that weave through old rubber plantations and seaside ecosystems no longer found on the main island. Get there from Changi Point Ferry Terminal via a traditional bumboat for $2.50 a seat – captains will leave only when all seats are sold or if you pay the difference.

This is a great day or half day trip when you are in Singapore!

It's a short (10-15 minute) ferry ride to the island. Incidentally, take a cab to the ferry termnal.
Pulau Ubin (Granite Island) is a national park just off the coast of Singapore.
This island is a popular leisure destination with locals- young couples will go there and rent a tandem bike to cycle around the island, and take in the picturesque scenery.

There is a fishing village where you can dine in one of the restaurants- they offer delicious local seafood, particularly the fantastic chili or steamed crab!

There are very few cars on the island.

This is a very pleasant and tranquil place- ideal for walking, cycling or just siting back and eating beautiful seafood while drinking a cold beer or sipping on a refreshing coconut milk!

Highly recommended

Pulau Ubin is probably the most accessible island escape for those who want to indulge in a bit of outdoor activity such as biking, hiking, and camping. The Changi MRT (with Bus 2 to Changi Village) or a taxi from the city center (about 20$ SGD) are two ways to get there. Once on the Waterfront, bumboats take you to the island for a mere 2$ SGD. It is a 10 minute ride to the island itself.

Once on the island, there is a visitor’s center to the right of the dock with free maps as well as a mini-museum on the island and its unique plant and animal life. To the left is the village proper, with multiple shops selling bicycles. I rented one for 10$ SGD and biked from one end of the island to another for over two hours. There are multiple stops along the way offering cheap drinks and even coconuts. There is a walkway and lookout tower on the eastern edge of the island where you can see the outlying islands as well as appreciate the surrounding scenery.

Of note, many of the tourist “attractions” such as the Scottish doctor’s house and Buddhist Temple found in American guide books (Lonely Planet in particular) are no longer found on the island as of January 2009. The western portion is being developed as a competitive bike park (Outward Bound Singapore) and the resorts appeared to be closed down.

Well worth a visit for those who want to “get away from it all” in a safe and inexpensive fashion.
