“Worth its 4star rating and well situated for exploring the Island.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2011

I have been comng over to the island for the last 8 years and have stayed at the casino hotel due to it having a large carpark but the poor quality of food of late made me look for somewhere else.
Mount Murray is the on qulaity hotel that has a decent sized car park but is 4 miles from Douglas in the middle of nowhere
The bedroom I had was a King size and was well equiped with good furnishings typical with 4stars.
Food was good with service exceptionally fast. An alternative is the Hop Garden Inn across the road which has very good food.
The staff are helpful, courteous and friendly.
Overall, a good hotel ideal for travellers with a car who don't like parking on the roadside.
But if you are looking for somthing special this hotel could be found anywhere in the UK.

We have stayed at the Mount Murray on several occasions including a large family wedding in March 2010. Yes the hotel is indeed a little tired, the service is very hit and miss, it does need renovation in many areas and the bar drink prices are extortionate. On the plus side always had a good breakfast, lovely location, decent pool and after several visits we grew to like it for a short stay. It's not even close to a 4 star but acceptable if you get a decent rate.

However, I am compelled to write the following review which states why we will never stay at this hotel again.

I rang the hotel one weekday afternoon to enquire on rates for a stay in February 2011 with 2 adults and 1 child. They have a winter rate special on until March 2011 and I asked for a family room, two doubles beds in one room basically. The lady I spoke with offered several different prices and apologised that she wasn't sure what the rate was and that I would need to wait over 24 hours before she could ring me back and confirm when her manager returned? Not ideal when you're trying to book a hotel but I accepted and the following day the call arrived.

I was then told that a family room rate was £79.95 per night (for the double, double) but any child staying in the room would per charged at a rate of £50 per night per child!!!!!!!!! I said this is surely incorrect but was told it was now policy of the Mount Murray hotel (and confirmed by the Duty Manager) to charge this per child per room per night on top of the room rate you pay for. This meant I would pay for a total of £129.95 for a family room (note the term FAMILY ROOM!!) which you already pay £20 more a night for to have 2 beds and then be asked to pay another £50 per child, per night to have them stay in the FAMILY ROOM with you. So if you have 2 kids that's an extra £100 a night to have them stay in the room with you. This is compounded by the fact you can actually book a double room for £59.95 per night for 2 adults but for 2 kids staying in your FAMILY ROOM you have to pay an extra £100 a night. I have never heard of anything more ridiculous in my life!!

To say I was shocked and angry was an understatement and again asked why on earth they have this policy as we've stayed as recently as October 2010 and there has never been any mention of it. She couldn't answer and said...it's now policy!

Appauling service (and not for the first time from the reception desk here) from the Mount Murray who should be ashamed they treat family's like this...especially return visitors like ourselves. This is why we will never stay at the Mount Murray again and I urge everyone to consider strongly whether they wish to stay here in the future especially if you have children then as the title of this review says "Forget the Mount Murray!", there are still places on the Isle of Man that offer customer service, sadly this is not of them.

In simple terms, this hotel is NOT a 4*. Room was old and needs lots of attention to say the least! Bathroom was not great either, as shower seemed to have a mind of its own. Reported to hotel, and they did in fairness come to fix quite quickly.

Hotel staff, like most hotels, were mainly from oversea countries, so when wanting to gain some local knowledge and suggestions of things to do - we were given no help, except for some brochures. Yes these were helpful, but still thought their might have been some isle of mann workers in hotel - even the manager on shift was not from the Uk.

Food in hotel was different everytime - great had we not had ordered the same dishes? Pasta dishes in particular seemed to taste different from day to day, again?

The only positive thing about this hotel is location (if you rent a car), and the Health club. Health club has a quite big gym, swimming pool, and a big jacuzzi - well we thought it was a big jacuzzi. Turned out to be a Hydrotheraphy Pool which was amazing.

Half way through our break bar staff seemed to become more chatty, and staff in health club always helpful and greet u every visit. Must say that Jason & Julie on reception were very helpful with suggestions of things to do and places to eat on the isle of mann as they are locals. Just a pitty we only met them near the end of our break.

Overall the isle of mann is a place to visit, and would come back again. Just not sure if we would stay in this hotel if we're completly honest.

We stay at this hotel 3 times a year, and have done for the last 2 1/2 years.
As allways a warm welcome from the minuet you step into the very clean large reception.
No problem with check-in, asked if we want morning papers or wake-up call. then given our room number and directions as to which floor it is on.
We all ways book a King room! HUGE!!!! The bed is probally big enough for 4! the room is very large and airy. tea, coffee, hot choc and bickies provided. Large wardrobe with hangers and trouser press. Good sized bathroom with bath and double shower.
Free use of the gym, sauna, steam room, pool and extensive hydrotherepy pool.
Good restaraunt and bar, which also does food.
Staff brilliant!!!
Just outside Douglas town, so nice and quiet in beautiful suroundings. yet only 5 min drive to town.
Would definately recomend to anyone!!

Hotel is well located provided you've got your own transport. Very easy to park. Rooms of a good size but looking rather shabby. Also the plumbing needs a good review as it was noisy and the shower was very poor. We had to get maintenance out to fix it and even then it was not good. But we had a quiet room and didn't want to move. Breakfast good choice and plentiful. Service was very good from reception to bar to restaurant, the staff were friendly.

Wanted to explore the IOM and didn't want to bother with parking in Douglas. Wish however we'd brought our golf clubs as hotel has a fine course attached.

Great weather with no rain (which presumably puts one in a good mood). Hotel staff very pleasant and obliging. Restaurant pretty good, with a somewhat limited wine list (for a buff like me). I discovered however that Okell's bitter was all you needed to drink and we didn't bother with wine.

The restaurant was a little expensive and so we also dined in the Sports Bar. Excellent food and very good value. The Steak & Ale pie finished us both off.

Didn't fancy putting hats on to swim so we passed on the Leisure Club, although tis was clearly highly subscribed by locals.

Room large, clean and with a good bathroom but only a small double bed, where a gargantuan one could easily have fitted. Decor in public areas looked a little tired or perhaps old fashioned, but not a problem really.

We enjoyed our stay here and will come again (armed with the necessary weaponry to do battle on the course).
