“Dream Wedding Realized at the Congo Bongo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2013

Wow! We owe the Congo Bongo such a huge thank you for making our dream wedding in Manzanillo a reality. From our first contact and all the way through until we said our final goodbyes, Daan, family, and staff ensured every detail of our week-long stay was perfect!

Our idea was simple. Invite all of our 30 wedding guests on a week long vacation with us to Costa Rica, which ended in us getting married on Manzanillo Beach. That said, we rented all six of the houses for a week of family, friends, and fun. When we got to the Congo Bongo, Daan was there to personally greet us and help all 32 guests get settled in. The staff took care of every need. From helping us book excursions to leading nature walks, and even doing our laundry, we had truly exceptional service in the jungle.

The wedding itself was spectacular! The staff was there to work with all of my vendors and ensure they had access to the space. They even raked the sand at the beach so everything would be perfect for the ceremony. It was so special to get married with the Caribbean waves as our soundtrack while the howler monkeys looked on from the trees.

The amazing beauty of the open-air Long House was perfect for our reception. Daan and team did extra work for us to manicure the foliage around the house so everything would be just right. The large open-air porch of the house was ideal for setting up all the dinner tables and a bar. Plenty of space! And very little needed to be done as far as decorations since each house is filled with amazing artwork. The wedding and reception were even better than I could have dreamed.

I don't know that I can ever repay the Congo Bongo for the kindness they showed us. They made this very special life event everything I ever wanted and more.

This is an adventure we, nor any of our guests, will ever forget! THANK YOU CONGO BONGO!

Wow, we loved it here! The owner and his family are so friendly and helpful. Anything you want they go out of their way to get it for you.

Laundry service was great although nothing ever really dries completely in the rain forest. Even our Passports curled in the dampness!

We had a really cool house cat at the River House we encouraged to hang around us. One morning, with our encourgement, we had the cat, two chickens and two dogs join us for breakfast.

Beyond beautiful, it was like a dream - the flowers, the trees, the animals, the butterflies. Never got bit by a mosquito the whole time, but we used off when we remembered. Lot's of interesting bugs around, but none ever bit any of us. The monkeys can get loud and so can some of the birds, but it's the jungle so expect that.

Manzanillo is a small village with some good Soda's and Maxies for eating if you don't feel like cooking. The short walk to the beach is so beautiful perfect opportunity to see some wildlife and take-in all there is to see in the jungle.

Ask Daan to set you up with Omar Cook as a tour guide. He'll take you on some great adventures. He even got us some Red Snapper for dinner one night. We BBQ'd it on the outdoor grill at the River House.

I hope one day to go back to Congo Bongo it was that good, so GREAT there.

Room Tip: Stop in town Puerto Viejo, for supplies like paper towles, coffee filters, salt/pepper, ice. The ho...

Congo Bongo is a great place if you're really up for living in the jungle! This means hearing howler monkeys, insects and birds all night and being comfortable with all the animals and insects in the jungle. If you are not comfortable living with bugs, lizards, etc., this may not be for you. I loved our friendly chicken visitors every morning and hanging out with the 5 dogs on the property (Gala is my favorite). Also they have a wonderful security guard - Jose - who walks the property all night long to make sure everyone is safe and secure. I also loved the outdoor shower and the deck. I would recommend bringing mosquito coils and possibly your own mosquito net. There is one in the room over the beds but doubling up may help.

We stayed in the river house in September 2012. We loved the house, especially the setting. The grounds here and the work that is done to keep up the environment is astounding. We were treated very nicely by the owner and his family, and we were very thankful for the convenient laundry service. Congo Bongo could market itself as a park. I loved winding along the hand-built path to the beach. We saw monkeys several times on our way there. Our favorite beach in the area is Punta Uva, but it is much smaller than the beach right in front of Congo Bongo. Manzanillo is a short walk down the beach, and we could drive to Puerto Viejo for more shopping and food options in 15 minutes or less. Don't miss out on spending a day at Cahuita National Park if you have a car or can take the bus. The beach is pristine, and there is plenty of space for privacy. Stop by the Jaguar Rescue for a tour if you are an animal lover.

Congo Bongo is a beautiful rustic retreat located in the jungle with a private walkway that leads to a pristine and secluded white sand beach. It was the perfect setting for our family's annual vacation, we couldn't have been happier with our experience. Daan and his generous family made us feel right at home and cooked us delicious family style meals. Daan not only seamlessly coordinated our travel to and from San Jose, but also our daily adventures. We would highly recommend Congo Bongo to anyone who wants a laid back, beach experience.

This property is aging. You have to be comfortable with insects to feel ok about staying here as they are everywhere. Without a/c summer sleeping is clammy and sticky. The room fan was covered with grit but using it was essential. The outdoor fridge needed to be replaced as its exterior was showing its age and proximity to the ocean. We were always being cautioned to use the safe, lock our doors and keep windows up and doors locked on our car. Driving to Manzanillo was a nightmare as a landslide closed highway 32 for more than a day and there was a riot in the street in Limon. We had to drive through an angry crowd that attempted to close down the street by burning garbage across the width of the road. There were no police and no warnings about what we were approaching in Limon.

Room Tip: If your traveling in the summer I would recommend a location with air conditioning. We chose CB bec...
