We have just returned from a week's break at Thurnham. After an initial hiccup over our booking, we were given a two-bedroom apartment in the grounds, which was superb in all respects. Furnished to a high spec the apartment was roomy, exceptionally clean and had everything you might require for self-catering. The bathrooms were luxurious and very warm. Comfortable seating in the sitting room area and light and airy throughout. In the Hall itself, the Reception staff were welcoming, efficient and helpful. The bar area (Grand Hall?) was very welcoming with a huge log fire to warm us. We ate in the restaurant and found the food to be well-presented, well cooked and generous in portion size. The surrounding area provided enough variety and easy access for a whole week's exploring. We would certainly return here.

Having just stayed at Thurnham Hall last weekend (21-23 September 2012), we thought we'd share our less than satisfactory experience ...

We arrived on the Friday night having booked a '2-bedroom elite' apartment only to find that we had been allocated No 54 - a disabled adapted ground floor apartment - which we had stayed in previously approx 3 years ago.

The en suite bathroom is a wet room shower room in this apartment and, as we experienced before (and complained at the time!) the floor levels mean that the wet room floods towards the bedroom door. Luckily, the resort is aware of this and guests are provided with a floor 'squeegy' to mop up the flood!!! Very poor and less than the quality we expect in an 'elite' apartment twice in a row. We wonder how many more guests will have to put up with this before it is finally fixed? Expecially when the facility is meant to be used by less able-bodied people who must puddle through a flooded shower room and somehow manage to clear up due to a basic building defect?

There is no way that this apartment should attract premium rates given the continued ongoing problems.

Come on Thurnham Hall - get your house in order and sort this farce out once and for all!

    Room Tip: Avoid apartment 54

We’re really sorry to read your concerns regarding the apartment you stayed in at Thurnham Hall recently. We must advise that your comments came as a surprise to us, however, as we haven’t received any similar complaints from other guests who’ve occupied this particular apartment.

As you’re aware, the apartment you stayed in is specifically adapted for guests who require the use of a wheelchair. It will only be occupied by able-bodied guests if it hasn’t been booked a certain length of time before the check-in date, which appears to have been what happened in this situation.

The room has been purpose built as a wet room, and the slope of the floor is in line with regulations. While we do appreciate your concerns about water in the room, if the slope of the floor was changed to speed up the water draining it could make the area dangerous when wet.

Please be advised that the DDA-accessible apartment at Thurnham Hall also has a full bathroom with bath and shower in addition to the wet room.

We want all members and guests to be happy with their accommodation, and the resort would have been happy to look for alternative apartments for you if you had brought your concerns to the attention of the reception staff at the time they first arose.

We’re really sorry that you didn’t have a more enjoyable experience at Thurnham Hall on this occasion. We hope that you’ll choose to return here for another stay, however, and we look forward to being of service to you again.

We stayed at Thurnham Hall for a family midweek break. Overall the stay was excellent. The room was comfortable and the location very restful. The staff were very helpful. The pool and spa were clean, relaxing and fun. The bar and restaurant were clean, tidy and comfortable. The food was excellent. There were only two problems we encountered. When we first arrived at our apartment the stairs to the upper level childrens bedroom had been painted and were still wet. We reported this to the staff who quickly resolved the matter. The other problem was a problem with the radiators, although they were switched off, they made an occasional vibrating sound that we were unable to stop. If we had been staying longer we would have reported this to the staff who I'm sure would have been able to stop it for us. I would definitely recommend staying here despite the minor problems we encountered.

Weve just come back from having a 4 night break to Thurnham hall. The place is set in its own grounds within easy distance to the Lake district,Blackpool and Lancaster. We stayed in a 1 bedroom apartment(no 35) which had been refurbished. It was lovely. We was able to sit out at nights eating our dinner in the sun. There isn't much to do for teenagers but ideal for adults wanting a quiet getaway. My only thing I would change is the swimming pool as the water is too hot like getting into a bath. The food in the restaurant is brilliant.

We’re so pleased that you enjoyed your unit! As you are correct about the location and its nearby destinations, we’re glad you could use this to your advantage for a more fulfilling holiday.

We’ll let our maintenance team and management know about the pool. While we do advertise it as a heated pool, we certainly don’t want it to be too hot for our guests!

Thanks for sharing your holiday with us. We look forward to your next one!

We spent part of our holiday in the UK this summer and I booked a "room" at Thurnham Hall on 28 May, 2012. I had checked Trip Advisor and saw it was a well rated property. We needed a bedroom that suited 4 as we were traveling with the children, which is somewhat hard to find in the UK.

Our rooms were unbelievable. The "room" was actually a two story cottage/condo behind the main hall seen on the pictures here. We loved it. It was very clean, spacious, had beautiful bathrooms and a master bedroom. The sofa bed was downstairs on the main floor with a fully equipped kitchen for cooking or making teas/coffee, etc. We went to the Hall to have dinner after check-in and the staff was wonderful; very friendly and welcoming. Dinner was excellent, as were the drinks!

The children discovered the ducks and realized that they could feed the ducks for a small fee for the feed, which we did several times. In addition, there was a playground for the children and a Club House. We did not try the Jacuzzi as we were out of time. The grounds were very lovely. The only drawback was we needed to use the laundry and while the washing machines worked, there was a problem with the dryers heating properly. We reported it to the Club House and they gave us extra tokens to dry our clothing, which was nice.

In the morning, we met the Night Manager and he gave us a tour of the main Hall, telling us about the history of the Hall and such. He was a joy to talk to with. Our holiday goal was to be off the beaten path and meet real people, not superficial touristy mannequins and we got what we wanted. Warmth, genuine kindness, a beautiful room, gorgeous grounds and a comfortable stay. Our one regret...staying only one night. A longer stay at this property is required next time.
