“A perfect holiday!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 14, 2012

Victory Homestay is what it is... a home away from home! The location was picturesque and perfect, the weather was good, but above all, the people are awesome. Aunty Jancy is a thorough people-person, a great cook and a wonderful conversationalist. Her attention to detail can be seen in every nook and corner of the house, which looks like it is right out of a fairy tale...
We just returned from our holiday in Victory HomeStay where we had a perfect holiday. We perfected 'the art of doing nothing' and good food was served to us at the right time. There was plenty of space and time to do what we wanted to do - read and laze around.
We had such a great time there that we didn't even get out on to the road to visit the nearby tourist places, thought it was our first time in Coorg.
I know for a fact that we will visit this place again and again!

Room Tip: All three rooms are good and very well done-up, but we stayed in the one which had a bay window... t...

We had just moved to Bangalore from Gurgaon & were itching to explore Coorg, since we had heard so much about the place. The long Diwali weekend offered us this opportunity & after a little research on the net, we booked Victory Homestay, home of Brigadier & Mrs. Cauvery Ponappa & their 3 dacshunds for 3 nights.

I must admit that I was initially apprehensive of my choice since it was my first experience of a homestay. However, within 5 minutes of arrival, all doubts were laid to rest - and we were on our way to enjoying one of our best holidays ever.

But first, the location...

Travelling down from Bangalore, it takes approximately 6-7 hrs of driving to get there. Definitely get in touch with the Brigadier before you set out for the place, since he will give you the best routes. Do avoid the Husnur-Gonikoppal stretch like the plague since the roads on that stretch are terrible & are likely to remain so for a while. Take the Kushalnagar stretch & stop by at the Tibetan monasetry & Dubare elephant camp (especially if you have kids in tow). You may give Nishargadham a miss, nothing great there. Try to set out early so that you can be at the place by 6 pm, especially since the roads for the last 25-30 kms are non-lit.You should basically take the Mysore-Hunsur-kushalnagar-Siddapur-Polibetta route to get there.

The place...

Set among rolling hills of coffee, pepper & cardamom, 2 brooks gurgle through the 100 acres property. The house, built to resemble a British cottage, will take your breath away. The Brigadier may inform you later that the design was based on an illustration in the magazine "County Homes" that he came across in Calcutta!! The house is choc-a-bloc with Brass, wood & copper artifacts & almost resembles a museum walk-through - items Mrs. Ponappa has gathered over the past 30 yrs from across India - more of that remarkable lady later.

What to do...

If you are the type that wants to rush from one waterfall to another, from one temple to another, then this place might not be very suitable for you. However, if you are the type that would like to switch off your mobile (the reception is not good anyways :-) & relax & laze around & explore the estate & gorge on great Coorgi food then this is just the place for you. You can still tick the following boxes easily - 1. visited Madekeri, 2. visited Taal cauvery 3. visited Irpu falls 4. visited Nagarhole national park. Also please note that Coorg is essentially about beautiful drives - do drive down the Chettali-Madikeri stretch for sure- lovely views, good roads & waterfalls across the road line that stretch.

What to eat & drink...

Forget your paranthas, butter chickens & naans. Just request aunty to cook authentic Coorgi food for b'fast & dinner. You will be introduced to entirely new tastes, flavors & textures. Be nice to her & she may even offer you her home-brewed cherry wines ;-)

If you are a first-timer to a homestay....

Please remember it is a lived-in home & not a hotel. Would be nice if you help around a bit, maybe in the kitchen & pick up a recipe or two from aunty!! Get your own water, carry your dirty utensils to the kitchen....

Room Tip: Beg them for either of the 2 rooms on the 1st floor. The Blue room looks over the plantation while t...

We stayed there for 2 nights and loved every minute of it. We were made to feel so comfortable by our hosts that we slipped into calling our hostess Aunty in a short time. My children who are aged 6 & 4 yrs were running around the place and loved every moment of it. They are already planning when they will be going back there again. It was great to get homemade and delicious food. Overall it was a great experience....

We had spent 4N there and it was an really a memorable experience. Especially the hospitality by Mrs.Cavery ponnappa is wordless to say...you feel like you are visiting your relative. The amenties provided were good enough to enjoy and the food she prepared was something too different and was good. The nature lovers would can definetly consider tis to a good place to stay with. The stay is surrounded by a beautiful garden with variety of fruits and vegetables in their garden apart from cofee planations...Worth going again.

This home stay is far away from city traffic. If you want to spend some peaceful time in the vicinity of fresh natural air of 100 acre of Tea state, this is the right stop for you.
If you are planning to visit in and around MadiKeri city this may not be the right choice, because it’s around 40 Km from madikeri city.
Home stay has 3 guest rooms, a dining area, and Kitchen. Cocking facility is available. Owner is quite supporting and she showed us the coffee plantation and a little info about how they grow the coffee there.
Best time to visit this home stay is Feb, when coffee beans are ripe and ready to be plucked out.

Room Tip: Rooms quality is good. Choose the one facing the coffee plantation on first floor or the one which...

Victory Home, a picturepostcard homestead on a coffee plantation, belongs to Brig. (retd) Joe Ponappa and his spirited wife Jancy. Staying with them is not only a delightful exposition to the nittygritties of coffee production but a gastronomical adventure into Coorgi cuisine and culture as well. The brigadier even fished in the pond on his estate for our consumption, while Jancy busied herself at the traditional cooking range. She whipped up the local Kodava favourite, pork prepared in a Pandi curry with a breakfast of Kadambuttu, a ball shaped rice puttu and the mosy scrumptuous dosa anyone ever prepared for us at home.
Taking in the aroma of Arabica coffee while sipping some on the porch of the Ponappa home, one can hear the trumpeting of a herd of elephants in the vicinity. But that hardly deters us from taking a walk with Brig. Ponappa through his 100acre plantation, plucking coffee beans from the bushes and sniffing the cluster of coffee blossoms, till he leads us into the yard where coffee beans are being threshed for marketing.

Room Tip: There are two rooms, red and blue. We stayed in the red one and found it cosy and well-equipped.

We spent 3 days and 2 nights here and they have been one of the best times we had on any tour. Typical homestays we had seen till then were the minimilistic ones, but this is was indeed very different. It is truly like staying at home, very well decorated and complete with all the amenities you would need to feel comfortable. The differentiator, of course, is the hospitality by Mrs.Kaveri Ponappa....you feel like you are visiting your relative. You get coaxed to eat, try out new stuff and yes....there is loads of chatting as if you are catching up on old times. The home is tucked away from the main road and surrounded by lush greenery. Absolute peaceful environs help you unwind. We also would go for morning walks into their estate. If you love plants and flowers, which we do, the treat is endless....as Mrs, Ponappa has some amazing plants, she will take you around to show them and if you show interest, she may even part with a few for you to take back home. Mrs. Ponappa also cooks for you...very tasty and homely. All in all....we plan to visit again as we started missing the place and the people as soon as we got back in the city. I would strongly recommend people to try this place.....
