Have just returned from one weeks stay. After reading previous negative reviews I must say that my experience could not have been more different. Firstly our tent was very clean. Our hot tub and shower equally as clean and a lot of fun to use even if it did take a long time to heat. My husband got a great sense of achievement from tending the fire for four hours! We did have lots of flies but nothing my sister and a can of fly spray couldn't sort out! (This was bought from Wilkinsons and not the honesty shop)
My children aged five and seven thrived from their new found independence, playing in the play barn, collecting eggs and making new friends.
This is a holiday were everything takes twice as long to do and climbing the nearest hill to get a mobile signal is a must.
If you are used to living life in the fast lane do not visit Dolphinholme. If you want a retreat from modern day living then this is for you.
We will definitely return .

Just returned from a week on Feather Down Farm, Dolphinholme and what a lovely week we have had. The tents are absolutely amazing and truly rustic and provide the perfect farm camping experience. They are clean, cosy and well equipped. Having read previous reviews, Yes, I agree there are flies, but it was hot, you are outdoors in the countryside, is it not fair to expect flies? To avoid the flies, we closed the doors to the tent during meal times and it was absolutely fine. We had an outdoor hot tub and outdoor private shower which was brilliant. You do need to start the wood burner up for the hot tub and shower well in advance of going in which was very clearly explained to us by Barbara on arrival. However, it was well worth the wait, we had a hot tub every night and it was lovely to have an outdoor hot shower! The play barn was a big hit with all the children and it was lovely to be able to allow the children to roam wherever they wanted and know they were completely safe, making lots of new friends and playing as children should, without any tv and computer games, just simply playing. And believe me, they played ALL day and entertained themselves! All the fellow campers were lovely and everyone was really enjoying themselves, expect for the family who clearly could not live without their hair straightners and tv ha ha If you want your children to have a truly memorable experience and fantastic holiday, then I would say go to Dolphinholme Farm. The walks around are lovely and there are plenty wild hares, pheasants, hedgehogs and frogs to be found! We even saw a baby deer cross the field on our final day, what an end to a perfect holiday! Farmer John, Barbara and Mark are the perfect hosts and are very welcoming. They are very friendly and great with the kids, especially during milking time when the kids want to do it! We will definitely be returning very soon as the children cried when they had to come home, they wanted to stay longer! We were in the Maldives two weeks ago and Farmer John said it must have been a come down going to the farm....not at all, it was an equally amazing experience!

Room Tip: Get a tent with a hot-tub and outdoor shower!

was disappointed with the tent, it was really dirty, flies all over everything all of the time, had to wash crockery and work top several times with bleach and hot water so food could be prepared.
bedding was ok but not as expected, We paid more for the all frills, to find the hot tub was really dirty, shower was minging, ordered for the children 1 rabbit and 1 guinea pig got 2 rabbits (not really a problem) the honesty shop was what it was, if you wanted the items then you paid for them. did feel ripped off with the smoker, all you get is the smoker and 2 chickens at a cost of £40, (although the food was exceptable it was nothing amazing) stew pots were of the same value.(poor) because we had the hot tub and shower we used a lot of wood and had to pay for another barrow full at a cost of £10. we could afford it but there again it was more expensive than electricity.
Our grand children loved it and if I'm honest so did we, the river was amazing, Farmer John was knowledgeable and informative and friendly. I would like to try another site but don't think I would contemplate going back there even though the scenery was lovely. I couldn't stand the flies again

Room Tip: take more towels with you, as you only get 1 each take plenty of fly spray you will need it, take pl...

This was our first experience of 'glamping' but the tent was really dirty and absolutely full of flies. You could not leave your drink, toast, or any food unattended as flies were all over them. Worse still, after paying over 500 pounds for a three night stay the shop was charging for fly spray and tape. I looked at the reviews on the featherdown farm website and I think these must be edited as the duvets, pillows and kitchenware was really grubby and had dead flies stuck to some pieces. I really understand the 'rustic' idea behind the tents but it is not executed professionally at all. The river was beautiful and the highlight of our family stay. Our children are 4 and 7- they both loved it and didn't notice the hygiene issues!

Well......we have just arrived back from our trip to dolphinholme. A brilliant time was had by all. Our party was my wife and I and our 7 year old daughter. Being a man I thoroughly enjoyed poking with the fire. Forget watching top gear the fire is the best entertainment a man could ask for. We really got into the spirit of country /farm life. The farm owners were really friendly and helpful they really went out of their way to show us around, engage with the kids and even cooked our pizzas last night which were great. We enjoyed playing in the river, the play barn and exploring the woods. The local pub The fleece was a good lunch out. Without wishing to sound too cheesy it really was like going back to when I was younger (a lot younger) and kids would just go off make friends and PLAY for hours on end. No games consoles no phone connection (seriously not even a text is possible and forget Internet) no TV. Just playing, chatting and meeting new people. I may still have my post holiday rose tinted specs on but I can't recommend this place any more highly. I have been on all different types of holidays in numerous countries. This is definitely one of, if not the best holiday we've had as a family.
Tips
Put lots of fire lighters on the fire before you try and light it
Girls there isn't really a spot to plug in your straighteners in the showers however if you take a travel adaptor you can plug the in a shaver socket or use a sneaky socket in the shop - sorry Barbara
In short it's brill

Room Tip: All good from what we could tell

We had a wonderful time at this lovely working farm. Our children loved playing in the play barn (they got covered in dust but loved it) with the other children, collecting eggs from the chickens, playing by the river and looking after the guinea pig and rabbit we had reserved.

We stayed in April right at the start of the season, just after the heavy snow across much of the UK. The cold weather did not deter us from 'glamping' but the extra firewood the owners provided and the constant hot water from the boiler by the farm shop was very, very welcome. At that time of year plenty of warm clothing, extra blankets and sleeping bags are an obvious necessity. The owners provided extra hot water bottles which, combined with the permanently available hot water from the boiler, made a real difference in the cold weather.

The owners were lovely and struck the right balance between checking we had everything we needed and leaving us alone to enjoy the peace and quiet.

A wonderful holiday in a lovely environment which we would happily repeat at any time of the year. As a result we are now also considering other Feather Down Farms for future holidays.

Room Tip: There are only ten tents on the farm and even the one nearest the farm shop is fine. However it is...

Nothing bad to say!
1. Friendly owners but not intrusive.
2. Goat feeding with Mark the Farmer was great and he has lots of patience with the kids.
3. Hotpot expensive but worth it.
4. Accommodation clean and just as expected.
5. Service was efficient when we arrived and departed.
6. Pizza oven was good fun and you got to mix with the other families a bit more.
7. Only 10 tents/cabins on the site so lots of space for the kids to run around safely and make friends.
8. Trampoline, haybales, slide and sandpit were great for the kids. Plus the snooker/pool table
9. River was lovely and would have been great if we were freezing in the week that we stayed!
10. Lovely area as well.
11. Lancaster town is well worth a visit - it's a very pleasant town.
12. Lancaster castle is good for older children and adults as you have to do the guided tour which takes about an hour and there is a sign as you enter saying 'Noisy children will be asked to leave'!!! So if your little one won't last for an hour without making some sort of noise its probably not for you.
13 Collecting the eggs in the morning was great for the kids - they loved it.
14 Hot water available in the tap by the honesty shop was a God send for tea, coffee and hot water bottles in the evening as it was very cold while were were there (beginning of April 2013).
15 Thousands of goats which were great to watch and stroke etc.
16 The beds were suprisingly comfy and our 18 month old had the best sleep ever?!!
16 We would definitely recommend this Featherdown Farm. A lovely hard working family that are very welcoming. 10/10

We will definitely book again and would like to go back in the summer months or even a Spring that isn't as cold as the one we have had this year (so far).

TOP TIP - take lots of hot water bottles and sleeping bags for extra warmth.

Room Tip: Hot water bottles and sleeping bags!
