“Undoubtedly very good, but certainly not "the best" in India ......”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Got very excited at the resort getting rated as one of "the best in India" and booked a 3 night holiday for the family ....... primarily for the family to experience "the best in India" !

While the service, right from the booking to the welcome telephone call on the date of check in, and the entire service experience during our stay was absoultely fantastic, and the food was also very good, what was very disappointing was the location ! It was made out to be on the banks of the river Cauvery, which it isn't ....... one has to get out of the resort and walk for 5 minutes through and unpaved and stony road ....... going through villages reeking of cowdung and urine ...... to reach the banks of the river, which was anything but beautiful ....... very very disappointing, considering that the website of the hotel and the photographs showed a hammock on the banks of the Cauvery ......

Very good, but certainly not value for money ..... and hence Orange County Kabini is out of our wish list ! At this price one can enjoy the Vilas properties of the Oberoi Group (Amarvilas, Rajvilas, Udaivilas, Vanyavilas, Wildflower Hall), which are truly "the very best in India" !

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your feedback on Orange County Resorts. Thank you for all your positive views on service standards and food at the resort.

Orange County, Coorg occupies 25 acres within a 300-acre Coffee and Spice plantation. The 25-acre resort property directly borders river Cauvery. The river is approx 250 meters from the reception. Yes, you have to walk approximately 50 meters on a village mud road and you do not pass any village to get there. I am guessing that you walked to the riverside village 500 meters away from the resort.

Being an Indian, I truly believe that India lives in its villages and many of them, we know, are far cleaner than most of our cities .

We would also like to point out that no where have we mentioned about or shown the photo of a hammock on the riverside because we do not have one by the river. However, we do have hammocks on the side of the private lake.

Thank you very much for your valuable feedback. It is such feedback that has helped us continuously improve the Orange County Experience over the years. We will surely look at the possibility of creating a special place on the river bank for our guests to enjoy this scenic river.

Warm Regards,
General Manager – Operations

We were in Orange County Coorg from 1st Jan to 4th Jan 2013. It was an amazing holiday experience. We stayed in a Private Pool Villa overlooking the lake. (PPV-909). It was just fantabulous. The private pool villa was superb and the house keeping staff were always eager to be at our service like cleaning the pool whenever we wanted it. The food was excellent and we had options of dining in three restaurants. The multi cuisine Granary and the Peppercorn for kababs was a real treat. The resort is in harmony with the nature and is a must visit for nature lovers as it is set in 320 acres of spice and coffee plantation. The travel in electric buggies from the villas to the restaurants and to the reception, when ever you want it, is another added attraction. The activities listed for the guest is also in tune with the plantation theme. The only problem is the bad road in streches that leads to this resort. Thats like driving thorugh hell. But once you are in Orange County its like being in heaven alive!

Room Tip: An unique holiday experience. A great place, good food, lovely people and an amazing hospitality. Wo...

The Resort is very well maintained and the best part was the hospitality with which they treat everyone. We stayed in private pool villa which was very good with a beautiful private pool. There is 3 different restaurants each one different from others. Its Slightly Expensive but had a beautiful experience

Room Tip: Avoid Lake view rooms if you prefer privacy

We stayed in a PPV during what was supposed to be a premium week at Orange County. Initial impressions were nice. On the day of check in we got a cordial call checking on our arrival details. We payed close to 40k a night for 3 adults. In my opinion for 40k a night you can go to Goa's finest resorts and still save a handful.
The pool was dirty on the first day. But that is acceptable given the plantation setting. However to our dismay the cleaning staff didn't do their job very well. When asked about the honey bees circling around the pool we were told "don't worry you'll be fine" and as soon as the staff left, I was bitten by the bee. And so therefore no pool for the day.
The food is the main attraction. Peppercorn is a gem of a restaurant. The setting and the food and the candlelight dinner was just perfect. But the other two restaurants were extremely disappointing. Dosa for dinner? Ok I'm in south India but still.
Pasta was served cold. In a hotel that claims to be 5 star property there should be a live counter for pastas. And NO PIZZAS at all in what is supposed to be a multi cuisine restaurant.
Evening snacks were also a major disappointment. My suggestion, try avoiding lunch and evening snacks.
As for the room, some renovation is required urgently. The wooden structure of the bed (the 4 pillars) were extremely loose and we were scared of em falling apart. The bathtub also needs refurbishment. The quality of bed sheets was low. For 40k a night you need to give comforters and not those rough blankets you get in Indian Railways!
Overall, not very satisfying. Go there only if you own a bank and want to com back disappointed.
And the check out experience is awful! The night before check out you get a call saying "Keep your stuff ready by 11am LAST. we will send the bell boy at 11 am." RUDE.
Lastly, it's a very average property. Extremely overpriced. Good luck to whoever is going there. You're in for some boredom.

Room Tip: PPV if you have kids. Otherwise the Presidential Villa is good enough.

Dear Guest,

Greetings to you!

Thank you for your review on Orange County, Coorg! Let me assure you that we take guest feedback very seriously and certainly make necessary changes and improvements based on the same. We have gone through, analyzed and discussed the same with various concerned departments for their views on your points.

As regards the food, between the 20th and 31st of Dec, we had organized 10 nights of themed dinners, were we showcased food from different parts of southern India. While we do have a selection of continental dishes, it is our philosophy to deliver primarily a local experience even in terms of cuisine. Incidentally, on regular days, live pasta counters are part of the dinner menu twice each week.

We have an entire team dedicated to cleaning pools. As a standard practice, a pool is fully cleaned during morning hours and a second round of cleaning for leaf removal is done in the afternoon. Your room and pool were cleaned and inspected prior to your check-in in the morning. This being a season for wintering (Leaf fall) in Coorg, leaves continuously fall from the canopy of trees above the pool yards. However, on your request, the evening leaves removal service was advanced to 2:30 pm.

Being situated in a wild area, the resort premises do have honey bees and other insects. In fact Coorg is well known for its ‘Coorg Honey’. On your complaint about the presence of honeybees around your private pool, we had sent our pest control team to clear the area of the bees. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

The entire furniture at the resort is handcrafted on site by local craftsmen to retain the local authenticity. On your complaint, the wooden posts surrounding the bed were tightened and the problem rectified. The blanket was provided only for the additional extra bed in the living room which you had requested. Special duvets for the single extra beds have been ordered and will be made available shortly.

We usually request for an on-time check-out in advance only at times when the resort is on full occupancy the next day. Only in such cases, it is customary for the hospitality executive to meet the guest during the latter’s stay and in the course of conversation, discuss the departure timing. However, she had to call you on this issue as she was unable to meet you on the evening prior to your check-out. This process was chosen because there is currently only a 1 hour gap between a check-out and the next check-in, for housekeeping to get the room fully ready. Only a timely check-out can ensure that the next guest does not have to wait for the room to get ready for check-in. Based on such feedback, we have decided to give a 2 hour gap between check-out and check-in so that our housekeeping team’s stress is eased to an extent. The hospitality executives have also been briefed to specifically meet the guests and to courteously update them on the situation before requesting them for an on-time check-out.
We would like to conclude by thanking you once again for your feedback.

Warm Regards,

General Manager – Operations

Our family of 4 stayed at the resort in late December 2012 during the christmas week. We stayed in a two room cottage (they call it American court) and it was nice, clean and very comfortable. The resort is part of a plantation and has superb surroundings. They organised a lot of activities such as plantation tours, tour through the neighbouring forest, a walk to the village, early morning bird walking tours and a tour to expereince how people work in the plantation. . The food in the restaurant is superb and the spread is lavish. The staff is eager to please and will readily make anything that is not already in the Buffet. The housekeeping staff and the guides are all friendly and eager to please. The good part is that everything is priced in the per day rates and the extras (laundry, room service should you order it, alchohol, etc.) are reasonably priced.

The best part is how they have integrated well with the local population (most of the 300 odd staff working are from the surrounding area) which makes walking about near the exchange a pleasant experience.

The road journey from Mangalore has a bad 40 kms patch and i am told the journey from Bangalore - via-mysore which is slightly longer is much better. So that is something you should keep in mind if you are reaching the resort by Air.

Hopefully they will not expand further and not make more rooms (we remember far fewer rooms from our earlier visit in 2001) and spoil what is a lovely unhurried experience. This is for people who like to get away from teh mad rush and dont mind walking around a bit in the surrounding area.

The resort is very highly priced which is the only reason i am not giving it a 5 because for the high prices the expectation levels are sky high and the resort just about manages to meet those expectations.
