“An out of the world experience for a city dweler in a coffee estate, in Ammathi, Coorg”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

We were to attend a family friends sons wedding in Veerarajpet, Co org on 1st and 2nd of June this year. We wanted to have a different experience for ourselves and settled for a stay in an estate, while attending the wedding. We went through the Google search and Trip ad visor as also lonely planet.

It was the period which was the ending of the season as school holidays was coming to a close, and most of the estate homes were fully booked. There are estate homes which suit all budget. They can be as pricy as upwards of Rs.30,000/-, and to low of around Rs.1,000/-, These estate homes which are variously called Holiday homes, Resorts and Home stay.

For City dwellers it is an our of the world experience. Some estates are semi forests, which in addition to coffee and allied plantation crops have lot of wooded areas having the local trees and timber as well as exotic plants. Some are more mundane.

They have a fare share of birds and sometimes even wild animals roam in them. Smaller games like rabbits, and various types of frogs and reptiles including snakes inhabit these estates, and they enrich the ecology. The naturally maintained ones are a rich source of oxygen.

Then we chanced upon Alath-Cad Estate. Till we reached the place we were apprehensive. But once we reached the estate after a drive of 110 K.m.'s from Mysore, via Periapatna, Siddapur, Ammathi, we fell in love with it. It has a old world charm and its wooden pillars and tiled room blends into the neighboring environs. It is spread over 100 acres and is one of oldest of the Home Stays.

They have retained the charm of the old, with good rose wood furniture, but refurbished with modern amenities in the bath rooms. It has suites, three and two bed rooms and cottages. It is managed by both people from Kerala and local people. They are nicely behaved though not very urban or sophisticated or trained in the art of Hotel Management. They have kept the rooms clean and tidy. If you order for food in advance you will be comfortable as The food is prepared for guests requirement and that they do not run an eatery, though they have a good dining hall. The food is good and tasty and as we eat vegetarian food only, we requested for exclusive vegetarian food. There was a nice spread of salad.

The prices vary during tourist season and lean season. They say it is best to visit the estate homes during October. Ms.Sushma, and her team made our stay comfortable. They had given us a spacious suite. We enjoyed attending a Co org wedding and our stay and look forward for a stay in future.

This was one of our first home-stay holidays in India and we had a decent experience. Set amongst lush coffee estates in what used to be the original family home of the owners.

Apart from our first visit to a coffee plantation estate, the other highlight of the stay was the delightful Coorgy food cooked by the landlady.

Spacious rooms, but basic - no frills.

Room Tip: Ask for newly refurbished rooms

When Outlook traveller listed Alath Cad as one of 100 best resorts in India, I chose to stay there and with some expectations. But I realised I did a terrible mistake - neither the location is good nor the property. And at 4000 plus taxes, it is definitely not worth.

I was stunned to see the quality of rooms. There was no proper water supply, hot water availability, and no proper service. I was ashamed to choose this after doing so much research and was worried what my extended family would think for bringing them to such insignificant place after making them travel so long.

We left after one night of stay and it's a relief to come out of the place. It's a lesson - to not to depend just on one source and plan the travel.

Stayed there for a couple of days in May.Good calm place. Food is a little expensive. Bit far from the heart of Madikeri. Little difficult to find your way in the night time. They do arrange for Bon fire and other activities provided that its informed in advance.

Room Tip: Choose one of the cottages rather than rooms.

We stayed at Alath Cad for two nights, and had a very pleasant stay. The rooms are large and well maintained, with a historic touch. The property has a nice play area for little kids which our little one made full use of, plus table tennis and basketball for older ones. We had a very nice walk around the coffee estate, plus a (paid) jeep ride from the owner. Food was as advertised -- simple home cooked food, but the quality was excellent, and the lady who handles things took extra efforts to make separate non-spicy food for our 5 year old. The place is a bit short staffed, and one person did everything from billing to cooking, but she was really efficient and always had a smile. (I can believe that in her absence there could be problems with food, reported by other reviewers, so you may want to make sure she (Sati?) will be there. Also note that they do not provide lunch, so make sure you have transport to nearby towns for lunch.) Overall, great stay, and definitely recommended.

. The so called restaurant of this resort is manned by the some plantation workers of this estate who triple(not double) as maintenance staff, room service people and as cooks by night as well. I believe that any holiday stay should be supplemented with good food as well if not best of cuisines. During my stay they served so tasteless, cold food without any variety that we were almost hungry during all time of our stay because there are no nearby restaurants- the nearest good one are 30 kms away in Madikeri town only. there was not at all any sort of entertainment and communication.d food was sooooo tasteless and above all there no variety.there was no hospitality 4 d customers.at d tome of check out we experienced gud hospitality. the worst part of d stay was d room service. there was no cable facility, water, electricity, soap in d room. .mumbaikars and thanekars think twice be4 staying there.during d peak season in this home stay only we were d customers.....overall d experience was very poor.

I agree with all the good reviews of this holiday home except regarding food. To top it all the food was highly over priced- you will end up spending more than 1200 rupees per day for a couple over and above of 3000 rupees per day for one room and you will end up cribbing your decision to chose this resort. I dont have the habit of criticizing any service but the the lack of a decent food standard really ruined my trip to Alath cad resort and i feel it will not be corrected because i have the feel of management of Alath Cad- there is no management. Sorry to say this but its true.
