“Lovely, Quintessentially English Hotel”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

We stayed for a weekend at the Old House Hotel after booking through Secret Escapes and getting a good deal. We were shown to room 6, which on reading other recent reviews regarding room 6, made my heart sink. However, it is a perfectly lovely little room, but it is probably their smallest so you can understand why they put all the people who are paying less into it. The bathroom was slightly on the chilly side due to the draughty windows, but it was also a chilly weekend and once the bath was filled with hot water you no longer noticed it was chilly. Big, white, fluffy towels and lovely toiletries in the bathroom, the bath also has a shower over. There was tea and coffee along with a bottle of mineral water, tv with plenty of channels and a hairdryer. The bed was lovely and comfy and we both had two good nights sleep, we weren't disturbed by the kitchen once, neither in the evening or the morning, in fact we slept until 8.50 on Sunday morning and nearly missed our breakfast slot!
We only ate one evening meal in the restaurant and it was delicious and they have a good choice of wine. The Hotel is lovely in the evening with lighted candles everywhere giving a real cosy feel, along with the leather sofas and comfy chairs.
The only real draw back is the very small car park, only allowing for 4 cars. We arrived at 7pm and the car park was already full so had to park in the square. This wasn't a real problem only that we had to go out before breakfast and buy a pay and display ticket on the Saturday morning, Sunday was free.
Lastly, after such a lovely meal in the evening I was looking forward to the breakfast and on reading other reviews had high expectations. However, the continental half of the breakfast was fine, but we were disappointed with the cooked breakfast. The sausages really weren't all that nice and had loads of hard bits in and the mushrooms were all dried and wrinkly, the bacon wasn't brilliant either. Wonder if they have changed supplier recently as other reviewers had said how nice the breakfast was?
Overall, we had a lovely stay at the Old House Hotel. We loved the old world charm, the crooked stairs and all the friendly staff, round down to the busy cleaners. We will be returning.

We booked a private room for a family celebration in the restaurant. So many things went wrong that listing the examples of rudeness and poor service would take too long to write. The owner told us they were two staff down but promised "it would not make any difference and we would be well looked after. In fact the opposite happened and they did very little right. The highlight of the evening was the owner telling us that he was going to sack one of his male members of staff. He was true to his word and came into our room to confirm he had sacked him. We could not understand why he was giving us updates on how he was going to deal with this young lad and found the owners behaviour appalling.
The food was tasty and the setting very pleasant

It is always difficult to respond to such an unpleasant review. We do confess that we had a minor "one off " problem with the service but under the circumstances we did everything possible to correct the situation.

It is our policy to do everything possible for our guests and you can see that 80% of Trip Advisor reviews are excellent.

As we were aware that our service was not up to our usual high standards we felt that it was inappropriate to apply a service charge.

On a more positive note we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your meal and surroundings.

Kind Regards

We looked forward so much to our visit to this hotel. The staff were charming at breakfast and dinner and the food was excellent.
However, the dirt and dust in our bedroom was probably the worst I have ever seen in an establishment of this supposed standard. We were out early every morning and back late in the evening so it wasn't until our final day, in full daylight, that we could see the accumulated grime. It made me wonder if the room had been cleaned in the previous month.
On checking out, no management were available. I have since e-mailed them with photographs of my complaints. To date, I have not had the courtesy of a reply. Why does that not surprise me ?

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 12. Maybe, they have cleaned it by now.

We stayed here overnight in the main house. Having enjoyed a very good dinner in the restaurant, we retired to our bed to find the matress extremely uncomfortable - you could feel all the spings. It was impossible to get comfortable so we resorted to lying on top of the duvet but this meant we were cold and there were no blankets in the room. We ended up only having about 1-2 hours sleep. The room is draughty and also above the kitchen so could hear all their noises and the air conditioning unit. It was the worst nights sleep ever in a hotel. When we checked out we mentioned this to the staff and they were not surprised and just said they were going through the hotel and replacing the old matresses and had not got round to the one in our room (room 6). Hardly an apology. Disgusted and will never stay here again.

Room Tip: Avoid room 6.

My husband and I booked a 2 night break middle of January purely for relaxation and to top up our batteries. We were greeted by Dawn who seems to be Hotel Manager/Receptionist/Waiter, who showed us to our room. I had previously phoned the hotel some weeks beforehand to ask for a quiet room as I am a light sleeper. We were shown into Room 6 - quite small but perfectly adequate. What we didnt realise was that the room was over the kitchen and therefore quite noisy until 11ish in the evening and woken again at 7.00 am in the mornings. Comfortable bed and both had a reasonably good nights sleep. Bathroom has both bath and shower options but water pressure very low and toilet takes quite a while to fill up. Windows are drafty and one window broken but as we kept the door to the bathroom closed this did not affect us in the bedroom. Bottled water is provided in the room as is tea/coffee making facilities. Breakfast is excellent and all locally sourced and set us up for the day until our evening meal. Tea/coffee topped up upon request as is the toast. Not rushed after eating and let our breakfast go down whilst reading the papers. You can order newspapers from Dawn and are waiting for you as you go into breakfast. We opted not to eat in the restaurant as the menu was a little too fussy for us and ate at The Kings Head in the square - see separate review. Note : the car park is tiny and allows for 4 cars otherwise you will need to park in the square and only a 3 hour parking limit from 9.00 am - 5.00 pm. Sunday is free. All in all we had a very relaxing stay. Staff are a credit to the hotel and very accommodating.

Room Tip: As mentioned in my review Room 6 is above the kitchens so quite noisy and a small double room

We were at the Old House hotel for two nights, staying in one of their Garden Suites. We had purchased a deal on LivingSocial much earlier in the year, and it was a pleasing surprise that they accepted our booking using the deal over the New Year. We arrived on the Sunday and were walmly welcomed and shown promptly to our room, which was a small walk away from the main buiding. We were warned that the recent wet weather had caused a bit of problem with water drainage and to be honest we were not surprised and were actually relieved that it wasn't as bad in the area as some places had been.

The room was large with a high beam-vaulted ceiling, a good quality TV and lots of light. The floor was tiled but surprisingly warm due to the under-floor heating which could be adjusted by a dial on the wall.

The bathroom (wet room) was a good size with a free-standing bath. Small improvement could be to either have larger bath towels or add robes. We were a bit concerned when we used the shower because although it is a wet room, the water seemed to spread across the entire bathroom floor without draining very well. There was some nice soap, shower gel and moisturiser in dispensers.

In the wardrobe, there was a coffee machine which we couldn't master and ended up leaving well alone after my partner had only managed a single cup of warm coffee, with water spitting all over the place (of course he didn't read the instructions beforehand!). The bed was enormous and very comfortable and the was plenty of storage. We had access to a terrace area which overlooked the garden, which I am sure is a lovely place to sit during nice weather.

We were booked in for lunch so as soon as we unpacked we made our way to the restaurant, and were seated in the conservatory which was bright and surprisingly cosy (under-floor heating again). We both had wonderful meals (3 courses). The food was cooked to perfection and was very tasty (particularly liked the orange bread and butter pudding - yum!).

The next day we went down for breakfast - the quality again was excellent and as equally well cooked as lunch. We went for a drive to the New Forest for the day as the weather was atrocious (pouring with rain with a howling wind) and we didn't want to sit in our room all day. We were looking forward to the evening as we were booked into the restaurant for a meal, and based on the experience so far, we were anticipating a treat.

Naturally the restaurant was very busy as this was New Year's Eve. Service was prompt and polite but sadly the food was not up to the same high standard as our previous experiences (perhaps it was because the restaurant was full). We had a mix up with the cooking of our steaks (seemed to switch the preferences between us) which was immediately addressed as soon as we pointed it out. However mine was returned without the parmesan crisp which the first plate came with, and although I am sure it would have been addressed if I had pointed it out, I didn't bother. The main meals didn't seem to have the same wow factor as the lunch, and it is because of this that I have not given the 5 out of 5 stars because the rest of our experience was excellent.

The area is fine if you have a car - not much in the immediate area. There are a few tweaks which could be made at little cost to improve (robes in the room, shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom) but this is being picky. We both had a lovely time despite the miserable weather. Would I return - if I had another deal I certainly wood (the high cost of the meals was compensated by the deal we had on the room)?

Room Tip: Garden suites are very quiet and away from the main hotel/

We stayed here for New Year. We arrived 30th (Sunday) and was upgraded to a four poster bed room. There wasnt many people staying that night, probably 2 other couples apart from us. The hotel is warm and very much in keeping with the age of the hotel. The hotel is in a square with couple of bar/restaurant, old fashioned tea room, in keeping with the area, couple of restaurants including an Indian which was very nice but quite expensive. The breakfast in the hotel was very nice. Lots to choose from. We ate in the restaurant on New Year eve and again was nice not great though.. It was very expensive considering the location of the hotel. . I had a steak, it was quite thin and was ok not great. The sides were not included in the main so the bill at the end of the night was very expensive. I have eaten better for less in West London. Not alot to do in the area unless you have a car and can ride out.

Room Tip: Four poster bedrooms are very roomy.
