“Charming hotel in lovely location.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

It really is a picture postcard of a typical quaint English Hotel. Set on the Market square in Wickham, it is a great location for just strolling around the town, but not too noisy at night (it is a very quiet town). Our room had a beautiful four poster bed (which by the way was incredibly comfortable), and although the rooms are quirky, they have everything that you could possibly want (tv, dvd, free wi-fi, en suite, alarm clock, tea/coffee making).

Add to this a simply superb breakfast (the sausage and bacon of top quality, and eggs cooked to perfection) in a wonderful conservatory dining room and you have the makings of a great hotel. It will not be to everybody's taste - it is old and angular rather than modern and functional, but I loved that quirkiness and old world charm. Also the restaurant (subject of a separate review) is one of the best places you could ever eat, so for anybody looking for a romantic retreat, or even business travellers looking for a break for the "chains", you should put this at the top of your list. Wonderful!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back will be quieter, although the town is not that busy and should not disturb your sl...

Took my Mum for lunch after finding that our favourite pub was closed ( it was a monday)I had passed the hotel on a few occassions and thought it looked very nice, but assumed it would be very traditional and a bit too mainstream. We got my wife to check the reviews on Trip advisor which suggested something better and went for it. We are glad we did. The restaurant was at the rear in a delightful conservatory with a view onto the small but pretty gardens. The restaurant was plush in a minimalist sort of way. They had a very good fixed price menu served with a carafe of house wine, but we went a la carte. We were not disappointed. The bread was very tasty and I had whitebait with a sweet chilli sauce and silverskin onions. The whitebait was - in my mum's opinion-who is a whitebait afficianado- the best she had ever tasted. I wasn't sure about the accompaniment but it worked surprisingly well. For the main course we had whole fillet plaice in a beautifully creamy chowder sauce. The wiater was very attentive, knowledgeable and proud about the food and the wine list. A good selection of wine by the glass and coffee was nicely prepared at the end of the meal. Would definitely return.

The bigs bits like the location, the rooms and the service are a given. It is the detail that sets it apart. Free and easy wifi. Under floor heating. Enough power sockets including enough by the dressing table mirror for straighteners etc. decent water pressure for showers. All channel Sky TV. King size bed. Moulton Brown toiletries.

The food. Let me tell you about the food. I have sat at the table with the Queen, I have eaten in many famous Michelin Star Restaurants but the food at the Old House is the best. The breakfasts are epic in quality but the dinners are world class. Whoever the chef is, should be paid double! Spectacular.

We stayed through a Living Social offer, so a very good deal for 2 nights B & B. We arrived in time for Sunday lunch, a set price, and it was the best Roast Beef I have had in years. The Cheese Souffle starter was heaven on a plate and I could have eaten it every day for a week! The chef or chefs here are excellent - everything we had was better than great! Puddings and breakfasts wonderful too. We stayed two nights in a lovely room and nothing was too much trouble for anyone. Everything was spotlessly clean. I only wish we could have stayed longer and cannot wait to go back!

We stayed for one night last night and had a very enjoyable overnighter. The dinner was very good with excellent service and breakfast was delicious and freshly cooked, which makes a great change, as most hotel breakfasts are kept warm nowadays. The room was a good size and very quaint!! We would definitely stay again.

Stopped here for one night on business. Great staff - really friendly. Ate in the restaurant. Shouldn't be hard to cook a steak properly but you'd be surprised how many can't. This was perfect. Wine (as ever in Hotels) was expensive but they have a good range. Breakfast was superb. The hotel is in Wickham Square and is a wonderful setting with picturesque buildings all around. Thoroughly recommend a stay here.
